Important information for those attending this year's event (BRBS 2013) (no replies)

Greetings BRBS'ers!

We're putting together the Saturday Tech Session for BRBS 2013 and different from previous years, we're not requesting for your feedback on what you want us to cover, but rather we're letting you know what we're going to talk about, to make sure you know about it and make it a point to be there.

Saturday will be a very informative and economically rewarding day for attendees of the BRBS Tech Sessions.
We will have two main tech sessions: How to Make your Porsche Faster (Stefan) and IMS Fix (Pedro).
Both sessions will have hands-on instruction and props to demonstrate and explain our points.
After lunch, we will move to the parking lot to do installations, quick fixes, etc.

Stefan's session will cover all relevant factors of "How to Make Your Car Faster" from A to Z.
It will not just cover the expected: add HP to your engine, but will touch on multiple factors to make it faster.
It will be very instructional and exciting.

During my session we'll be talking in depth about the IMS issue.
I'm sure you've heard of the Intermediate Shaft (IMS) issues that plague all M96/M97 Porsche engines from 1996 through 2008 (inclusive).
You may also be aware of the different band-aid fixes that have been offered by third parties since the problem appeared some years ago.
As soon as we realized that there was a problem, we started learning about it, obtaining difficult to find data and developing an economic final fix.

I'm extremely happy to announce that we will unveil the TechnoFIX at Saturday's tech session at BRBS 15.
This solution will completely fix the IMS bearing issue in all wasserboxers and can be economically installed into any M96/M97 Porsche engine without having to remove the engine from the car or worse, having to crack-open the engine block on the 2006 and newer cars with the larger single-row IMS bearing. My fix works on all Boxsters ('97 through '08), all Caymans ('06 through '08) and all Carreras ('99 - '08).

We will demonstrate (with a half cut-out Cayman motor that we're binging with us) how and why the TechnoFIX works and we will offer a very attractive discount for anyone ordering that day. TechnoFIX Kits will begin shipping immediately after BRBS, on June 3rd.

Also, just as in previous years, if any BRBS attendee wants any of our TechnoProducts, especially the brand-new TechNOwind for the Boxster981, if you pre-order before 5/24/13, we will bring them to BRBS (free shipping) and will install (most of our products) at no charge during the event.
Check out all of our TechnoProducts and then contact us to order. Feel free to contact us with "special requests'.

Thank you all and we'll see you in Little Switzerland and The Diamondback (NC 226A) in only a week!

I promise I'll be there "in person" this time ;)

Happy Porsche-ing,
Pedro

Update on the TPMS replacement question I posted earlier this week. (no replies)

My friend with the 2007 997 found a mechanic that sold him 4 generic 433 MHz sensors at $55 each. The mechanic charged $100 to program and install all 4 sensors for a total cost of $320. This compares with $195 per sensor that Porsche wanted. Not sure what the installation cost was going to be. After 10 minutes of driving, it was showing the readings for all 4 tires on the TPMS screen. Success.

If anyone in southern Ontario needs to replace their TPMS sensors, my friend or I can provide you contact information.

Three questions folks;

1) Is the brake wear sensor "mileage driven", so that it goes off after a certain mileage, or does it actually reflect the condition of the pads? The car just turned 45K and it seems like a coincidence that the light came on at that moment...,

2) Are Tygrave's instructions for doing a brake job on the 986 usable on the 987? And, if not, has anyone posted similar instructions for changing the pads on an 05 987S?

3) When I changed the pads on my 986, I didn't change the wear sensors. How many miles can I drive on the old pads before I damage the sensors? (like, could I drive to BRBS and get Pedro to do them at the Tech Session? :)-D Actually, I'm just concerned about driving the car locally until I can change the pads.

KtS

I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on this "magic" and steer me toward some or let me know if Permatex RTV Blue will do the trick. The Manual is very vague as to where or how to source this stuff and after visiting 2 parts houses, the only Butyl Sealant that anyone knows about (including Google) is a Tape used for installing windshields. The mechanic was under the impression that he had to get the code off the old unit to reprogram the new?? The local mechanic call a local Porsche dealer and spoke to the service rep. Turns out all you need to do is remove the old and install the new which is what we did on one wheel. Dealer wanted $192 per sensor, and the local garage charged me $55. The sensor is a 433 mhz and made in Germany. Well, after driving around for 30 minutes or so, still no reading.

He did the resets on the OBC as per the manual.

Does anyone know if the computer needs to be reset for the new sensor in order to get a reading?
Boxster Relay issues for top?? (4 replies)

I have a 2001 Boxster S. The left cable broke between the top motor and the left top transmission. I took off both transmissions and ran them backwards and forwards. They work fine. I have new cables installed on both sides. Everything seems to be working great, but the top motor will run to open the top, but will not run at all when the "up" top button is pushed. I do not hear anything in the double relay either when the "up" is pushed, but I do hear the relay when the "down" button is pushed and when the motor is plugged in, it works down, not up. Here are a couple of things I noticed: 1) my top motor does not have a micro switch on top of the motor and it only has two wires coming out of the motor the one I have seen in catalogs has multiple wires coming out of the top motor AND it has a switch on it to signal when the clamshell is down. Did some not have that switch? 2 I have removed the double relay and smacked it on the bench to see if that would revive it, it did not.

Am I maybe missing some other micro switch that is not working and needs to be engaged for the top to go up? The parking brake sensor must be working as the motor works going down. Is the double relay, a "double" so that it relays one direction when it is pushed "down" top and the other half relays in the other direction when it is pushed "up" top. I think it must be the double relay? HELP?????? Thoughts???

Adding AC refrigerant oil question (NBC) (5 replies)

Hi folks,

I have been searching the web all over and could not find a clear answer so hopefully some experts here can help me. Note: it is for a Honda 03 Accord (non-Boxster)

Anyway, with UV dye I found out my AC condenser is leaking (bad design) so I replaced the condenser and the receiver. The manual call for 25 ml (condenser), 10 ml (receiver) of oil (PAG 46 = ND-OIL-8??) to be added after I replaced them. It is straight forward. However, I also did a vacuum with my air pump to make sure there is no more leak. Someone on thew web said if I do a vacuum, it would suck out all the oil in the system and leave it bone dry. The total amount of oil is 160 ml (5 1/3 fl-oz). So simple question: should I add 35 ml (for condenser+receiver) or the whole 160 ml? I know I do not want to add too much oil,

Thanks for any help on this.

I know I can take it to the shop but the feeling of DIY is much more satisfying (and I know: I messed up most of the times but I learn it that way :-)))

Tony

missing spark plug screw (and oil leak) (3 replies)

While investigating an oil leak (one that I hope will be solved by replacing spark plug tubes), I noticed that one of my ignitors is missing one of its two screws. My guess is that a lazy mechanic (possibly me even) didn't tighten it enough, or an even worse mechanic missed it entirely. Does anyone know where to get a replacement screw?

Edit, here's a shot of where the screw goes (circled). Also, do others with more experience agree that this mess could be from a bad tube or oring? The car (2003 base) has 100k miles on it. I last replaced the plugs at about 60k. I thought I would post this here as the expertise appears very high. Pedro has done a good job with this forum.

Odd, I get a miss when accelerating slightly when the engine is cold. It appears to be around 3200 RPM but I am not sure it is dependent on RPM. No lights.... no other symptoms.

Do misses register in the computer? Any ideas or anything I can check myself? I have an OBD2 reader but I haven't popped in on yet.

By the way, I have not found a quality forum for 997.2 cars..... any one recommend one?

Peace
Bruce in Philly

Laser Jammer and V1 (12 replies)

I have been researching the radar detector market for several weeks now and also starting to look at Laser Jammer devices since it seems they are NOT illegal in the U.S. for 41 states (Source: Laserjammer.net). In the past I have had the original Escort and then the Passport but haven't bought a RD in almost 20 years. I ruled out the K40 and 9500ci because after speaking to several owners and installers (who make great money on these products vs hard-wiring a window or rear-view mirror device) because the general consensus is that if there is a possibility that you may sell the car at any point, the work to "undo" the wiring and removal gets tricky and sometimes takes a beating when trying to connect from one car to another. Also, the laser diffuser in the K40 and the 9500ci (different than the K40) are not that great for the money that you pay for. If you click on the site laserjammer.net, you will see there is a relatively new product called "Laser Interceptor" (I think in Tampa, Fla.) that is the cadillac of laser jammers. If you call this guy (I think his name is Cliff) you will see that he KNOWS laser jamming technology like Pedro knows Porsche's. The Laser Interceptor comes in dual and quad with quad being very thorough in coverage. So the answer so far, for me, is the Laser Interceptor...hands down. Now what about RD's????

I am very much leaning to the V1 because of his patent (front and back) and proven track record. I know the Redline, 9500ix, Bel are highly rated, it seems that the V1 is still "Gold" when installed correctly and now can be hidden with the concealed display option ($39). I see tests where the V1 looks like the red-headed step child that brought home straight F's on his report card and then I see legions of followers that believe in his technology, etc. Not sure what to do but I gotta pull the trigger soon. Lastly, I was directed to a California company that makes slick, custom fitted rear-view mirror holders for almost every car but at the time they didn't have a bracket for the 987 until now......I just got an e-mail from them 2 days ago and they tested and developed and are selling a bracket for Boxster's that have a manual dimming rearview mirror. The company is called BlendMount and can be found at blendmount.com. If you call them, they will call you back very soon as I think they are a small company. They also have a coupon for a 12.5% discount and free shipping and no tax( shipped outside California) if you ask them. So between a new V1 hardwired and mounted with a custom Blendmount and a Laser Interceptor, it looks like more fun travels. The question is Escort or Bel or V1????

A search on Autotrader will show that as of today, there are exactly 4 Boxsters for sale by private party for less than 45K with manual transmission in the entire country. One of those is this one. The ad is still up. I wanted this particular car because it has the power seat package with power adjustable lumbar support and driver memory. This is a very hard option to find on a base Boxster. I have some lower back issues, and I visit the chiropractor once a month right now. I just sold a Z3 which I was unable to drive for more than 45 minutes at a stretch because of my back problem. I am happy to report that I put in two twelve hour days of driving after a six hour stretch on the first day without any problems. The memory feature is nice because my wife will also be driving the car. She's an enthusiast who has always had sports cars and even won some autocross trophies in our 2000 Corvette. She was firm that we not even look at cars with PDK. The car was leased, and the seller who leases a new Boxster every three years decided to try to sell the car himself rather than just turn it in. Those interested might be on the lookout for a red 981 for sale by private party in Scottsdale in about three years.

The trip back was more interesting than I had counted on. There was rain mixed with snow in Kansas and Iowa. A few miles north of Wichita, at about 10:00 am, I noticed debris in the left lane and came up on a car that had hit the guard barrier on a short bridge. The Boxster steering is superb. I could tell as I crossed the bridge that there was no traction just by the steering feel. I think the other driver might have been going along with his cruise control on. Cruise control will actively throw you off the road if there is bad traction. I pulled over into a service area, thinking that the weather might improve. After an hour or so there was no perceptible change, so I called 511 for road info on my cell, and the conditions were reoprted as "normal seasonal driving". I continued on, and the temp gradually went up to 35 degrees so I began to relax a bit. I got to Iowa, and the temp began to drop. The first rest area advertised tourist info, so I pulled in. A fellow behind the desk said that there were just wet roads and no problems were expected. Roads were reported increasingly improving from 40 miles north. It was 4:00 pm and I wanted to keep going before it coooled down. I kept up a slow pace and stayed behind some trucks going about 50 mph. After a few miles, the temp dropped to 32 and I noticed about an inch of slush on the shoulder. I was concerned, and I actually passed some trucks that had pulled of the road due to some problem I didn't identify. Luckily, this only lasted about 10 miles and then the conditions quickly improved. No problems the rest of the way home. I have no complaints about the PS2's in marginal conditions.

I was prepared to be disappointed in the Bose audio after some reports here. I'm happy to report I very much like the system in my car. I went through a phase of real interest in audio in the 70's when digital audio was just coming in. I checked out the issue of "Audio" magazine every month for speaker reviews and listening tips. I ended up buying a couple of Yamaha NS1000M studio monitor speakers which I still enjoy. One of the things I listen for is clear understanding of lyrics especially in the case of CD's recorded digitally. I am very pleased with the Bose system, and think that those reporting problems should check out how systems sound in other new Boxsters. It's possible that Porsche made some running changes in the system. The build date on my car is 05/09. A loose speaker mounting or other loose door hardware could easily spoil the sound in a car.

I'm happy to be here, and have to say that tips I have picked up through years of lurking have been very helpful.
