Thursday Early Event Plans (no replies)

We sent out an e-mail to our 2012 list, but realize a few may not have received it, so we're cross-posting here. E-mail us if you didn't get the e-mail sent out last evening about the Thursday Early Event.

As you know, our beloved Pedro Bonilla had a serious accident at his home on May 11th. Pedro broke 8 ribs and cracked 4 vertebrae. He's in much pain, but he's home now making a slow recovery.

In typical Pedro fashion, he was e-mailing both of us from his hospital bed at 4:00am the morning after his accident! He's been working closely with us to ensure the tech sessions are covered, and Stefan, Guenter and Maurice have stepped up. If anyone else is interested in helping at these sessions, let us know.

We're still tweaking the Saturday schedule, and we anticipate further refinements later this week.

Thursday Early Event

We'll be leaving Switzerland Inn at 9:30am and heading to the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn along the Sugar Hill Road and Bill'sCreek Road route. This bucolic, scenic route will take is into the eastern approach to Lake Lure.

Lake Lure is approximately 720 acres, with 21 miles of shoreline. National Geographic has called Lake Lure one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the world. Lake Lure sits in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge. The Rocky Broad River tears its way in a series of rapids down through Hickory Nut Gap. This crystal clear water flows through a valley shaped roughly in the form of a Maltese cross to make Lake Lure.

At the Inn, you'll have the opportunity to take an hour-long boat tour of Lake Lure. Discover the beauty and charm of Lake Lure. Relax on a covered tour boats while the skipper guides us past local attractions and landmarks, such as the locations used in filming the popular movie Dirty Dancing. Listen to the legends, and learn about the natural and cultural history of Hickory Nut Gorge.

Boat tours will leave from the Marina at 11:00am and 2:00pm.

For those meeting us en route, plan on being at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn by 10:50 am if you've selected the earlier tour, and noon for the luncheon if you've selected the later tour or are not taking the tour.

For GPS purposes, the address for the 1927 Lake Lure Inn is 2771 Memorial Highway, Lake Lure, NC 28746.

We'll have a buffet luncheon at the Veranda Restaurant at the Inn from 12:15pm until 1:45pm. The menu for this luncheon is on the website. Renew old acquaintances and make new friends as you dine overlooking Lake Lure Beach, the lake behind it, and the mountains in the distance.

The Boat Marina is a short walk along a boardwalk west of the restaurant. Ample parking is available at both venues.

Before and after lunch, you can ride into Chimney Rock, a mile west of where we're eating, and see the sites.

We had initially planned an afternoon event at Chimney Rock State Park, as well as optional zip-lining, but we'll have to get back to Switzerland Inn for the 4:30 pm surprise, super-secret event. We'll have information about those missed opportunities if you want to return to that area Saturday afternoon.

The cost for the buffet luncheon is $20 per person. The cost for the boat tour is $12 per person if you tell us by this Wednesday. Otherwise, it's $15 thereafter.

An e-mail has been sent out to everyone currently on the 2012 roster.

What we need you to do now: If you're on the e-mailed list (or are not on the list but want to attend), e-mail us and confirm you're still attending the luncheon. Let us know if you want to be in the 11:00a or 1:00p boat tour (or neither one). Each boat tour is limited to 60 persons, so after one tour fills up, the overflow will go to the other tour.

We'll be collecting for the luncheon and boat tour at the event, so you won't have to mail in payment. See Mary, Nell or either of us at the event to pay.

We need solid numbers for the early event by this Wednesday, so please respond as quickly as you can. E-mail us if you have any questions.

Karl and Ron

2012 BRBS Tech Sweepstakes (no replies)

Just like last year, and the year before, we would like your input and will offer "fabulous" prizes for it....

... we're putting together the Saturday Tech Session for BRBS 14 and we'd like to cover what you want covered.

We'd like to receive from each one of you a simple entry within the theme:
"What you know, what you don't know or what you'd like to know about your Boxster/Cayman/Carrera".

So you could send that burning question that you'd always wanted to ask, or maybe share something unique that you've found out about your Porsche, or again raise the question of what oil is best for our flat sixes, which watch should be used while driving, or (gasp!) how many miles do you have until your engine grenades because of the IMS bearing!
Every one of your entries (only one per person, please) will be read and recorded. If you send in more than one we will pick just one.
If you want to remain anonymous, let us know and we'll respect your privacy.

Once all the entries are tabulated, an esteemed panel of judges at BRBS 14 will select the three winning entries which will receive prizes from PedrosGarage (and maybe other sponsors).
Prizes will be awarded at BRBS 14 for those winning entries.

The deadline for the entries is Friday, 5/18/12. (We need time to prepare the session).
E-mail your entry with your name, and address to: Pedro@PedrosGarage.com.
Please put "BRBS Sweepstakes" in the subject line to make it easier for us to find.

Thank you all and hopefully we'll see most of you in Little Switzerland and The Diamondback (NC 226A)!
Happy Porsche-ing,
Pedro

And now fot the legaleeze ....

TechSession Sweepstakes
PedrosGarage.com

About This Offer
• This offer applies to residents of the World only.
• Expires May 18, 2012.
• One entry per participant will be accepted.

Official Rules
1. (3 replies)

... we have just decided to cancel Saturday's Vibration Analysis.
In order to do the data acquisition we needed a stretch of road that would allow for 2600 RPM in 5th or 6th gear (about 60 - 63 mph) for 60 - 120 seconds.
Karl and Ron just returned from Little Switzerland last Sunday where they looked for such a stretch of road with no luck.
The closest stretch of road that would allow for that is I-40 about 45 minutes away.
In order to make this feasible we needed to "read" about 60 cars which meant that we had to have a 10-15 minute turnover for 3 days.
So, unfortunately we had to call off the Vibration Analysis :(

Nevertheless we still have a great tech day in store for everyone on Saturday :)
We will have the general tech session indoors early in the morning where we have a technical Q/A and will cover several different topics including how to obtain CHEAP HORSEPOWER!
Afterwards we break for lunch and then go outside to PedrosGarage where you can "get your hands dirty" by installing parts, making mods, cleaning radiators and just about anything else technical you can think of.
Assisting me at the Tech Session and at PedrosGarage will be Stefan aka Boxsterra, a Porsche engine transplant expert, and Maurice aka the Convertible Guru.

In the next day or so I'll be requesting that you send in your questions for the Sweepstakes, where we award prizes for just participating.
As in previous years, you'll also be able to order parts from PedrosGarage and we will bring them to the event (no charge for freight) and will also help you install them on your car. Stay tuned.

Less than 30 days and counting!
Happy Porscheing,
Pedro

Get ready for some HIGH-TECH ... (7 replies)

... Tech Session at this year's BRBS.
It all has to do with vibrations.
If you've ever worried about your engine's IMS or about the sound the timing chains are making lately, or just about any weird sound inside the engine, BRBS 2012 is the place for you!

Our special Guest Speaker this year is Mr. Mark Jennings.
Mark has been a PCA member since 1989 and today he drives a 2002 Carrera 996 which he bought new.

Professionally, Mark is a consulting engineer that specializes in Industrial Equipment Vibration Analysis.
He is a recognized expert in this subject and does a lot of work with the US Department of Energy and with the commercial Nuclear Community in the Northwest on rotating equipment vibration issues.
Mark also provides vibration monitoring, analysis and design prevention training to a broad list of commercial clients.

For industry, Mark looks at pumps, fans, compressors, motors, generators, turbines, gear drives, diesels and many other pieces of equipment that rotate and that have the potential to self-destruct due to balance, alignment or high vibration issues.

However, in the past year or so, Mark has been successful in collecting and analyzing vibration data on Porsche M96 and M97 engines using special analysis equipment and monitoring techniques.
What that means to owners of Boxsters, Caymans and Carreras that utilize these engines, is a quick way to determine if there is a cam chain, a primary chain an IMS bearing or even ignition issues associated with their cars with no disassembly required.

Mark has gracefully accepted BRBS's invitation to join us at Little Switzerland this year and will speak to us in great detail about his work and more importantly he will be bringing his equipment with him and will provide individual engine monitoring for about 60 cars at the event.

This vibration analysis is the first in non-intrusive, preventive service ever done on these engines.
Imagine being able to "see", or actually "hear", inside your engine and determine that one of your timing chains is a bit too loose or that the IMS bearing has started to wear, or even better, to get a clean bill of health because your car has a healthy engine!

As I said before, we will be able to "look into" about 60 cars at the event.
The procedure is very simple:
Mark will bolt-on a vibration sensor to the bottom of your car's engine, on an existing bolt.
That sensor is connected to his equipment which he will bring along on a 1 minute ride in your car.
The necessary data is collected and then analyzed and you get your results.
We will be asking for a $25.00 contribution per car, but all profits will go to the Blue Ridge Foundation.
Since we already have 86 cars registered as of today, it will have to be first come, first served.

If you are interested in this exclusive service, please send me an e-mail to Pedro at Pedrosgarage dot com with VIBRATION ANALYSIS RSVP in the subject line.
No need to send any money now.

If you'd like to read more about the issue, here's a Tech Article that Mark wrote and was published in the INWR PCA Newsletter: Uber Alles.
[inwr.pca.org]

I over-simplified the full article here: [pedrosgarage.com]

Happy Porscheing,
Pedro

PS: I will eventually move this topic to BRBS, but I thought it would initially reach more interested parties if we leave it here for a few days.

Thanks for another memorable getaway everyone! (2 replies)

Nina and I had a great time again this year! It was fantastic to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Sorry we didn't really had the opportunity to say goodbye to everyone.. We left LS under the cover of darkness Sunday morning determined to make the 800mi drive to Ft Lauderdale in one day. Like 2010, the drive home this was uneventful, no drama, no police and no ticket - left LS at 5:45am and arrived home around 5pm. I have to admit, I'm not sure I'll be able to make that one day drive again next year. I had toothpicks to prop my eye lids open. ;-) I think this is the year I'll teach Nina how to drive a manual, so she can share drive at the next one. Honestly, I'm still recovering 2 days later. :-s

Anyways... Karl & Nell, Ron & Mary coordinated a great location and organized a fun filled event, and everyone made it unforgettable.

Here is a short clip of the 226A from South to North on the South-side of the loop. Christian is, as you can see, very fast around these roads. It also got me wondering if he actually drives up to LS to practice when he can. :) I have a couple more that I'll post when I catch up on sleep.

Thank you all again!

Cris

Made it back home from BRBS last night. What a great time. (4 replies)

The organizers did a great job with the new venue. I think this is the 1st BRBS that hasn't seen a drop of rain in the 8 yrs we've been attending. Was great seeing all are old friends and making some new ones! It was really sad departing on Sunday with everyone going their own ways. usually we have a big caravan heading back to the DC/VA/MD areas that we can run with for a while. Not this year. Some really good new roads in and around the new site. All-in-all, one of the best events we've attended. Couple of scares were Juliette's visit to the local ER and the loss of the ability to shift the car in the middle of nowhere PA. Tranny just locked-up. Coasted to the shoulder. A couple of minutes of idling and checking things out and it started to shift again. Something is still quite wrong though as it's popping out of 2nd gear under light or no load.

See everyone 5/31/12.

Rey & Juliette
