This suggests to me that the condenser and compressor work, but the freon (is it freon?) is low?

Any general advice?

Back in 1969, I owned, what was always my favourite car until I bought my Boxster. It was a 1968 Karmann Ghia cabriolet. I always loved roadsters. Wish I could have kept it, but finances didn't allow for that when I needed a larger car for a growing family.

One day I had the Karmann Ghia into the local VW/Porsche dealer for an oil change. While waiting, I walked into the showroom. There, sitting on the floor, was a brand new beautiful silver 911 Targa with a whopping (for 1969) $23,500 price tag. I believe it was closing time that the staff finally had to drag me out of that car. :) From that day on, it was my dream to own a silver Targa. Actually, I would have been happy with any silver 911.

Whenever I was lucky enough to be sitting at a light with a Porsche beside me, I'd always roll down my window and hope the driver was in a hurry when the light turned green. (:D Over the years, for one reason or another, I was never able to make the dream come true. I did consider a silver 968 at one point. Pretty nice looking. But it wasn't a 911.

Then everything changed. 1993, the Detroit Auto show. There it was, a drop dead, gorgeous silver roadster. The Boxster Concept. It was silver just like any car that Porsche showcases. My jaw dropped. OMG! Porsche actually designed a car more beautiful than a 911. The engine was in the middle, where Ferdinand Porsche had placed it in his very first car, the silver 356-001, to achieve the ultimate in balance. In an instant, my dream changed. I lusted after one of these fabulous looking roadsters. I really, really wanted a silver Boxster. Soon I had one - a model of the concept sitting on my desk, where it still sits today.

It still took a few years, but in 2006, I was finally able to make the dream come true. I was actually able to do more than just look. It was time to buy a Boxster. I've loved driving all my life. This was going to be special. The only two options it HAD TO HAVE, were, silver paint and a manual transmission. There were a few Boxsters either in stock or on route to the dealer that fit the description, all with a longer list of options. I finally settled on one that would arrive at the dealers in a couple of weeks.

When it arrived at the beginning of March, I made the 60 mile drive to the dealer to have my first look. OH MY, what a gorgeous looking car! I arranged to have the dealer store it until the beginning of April. No way did I want to drive my Boxster while there was salt and slush on the roads. Every weekend in March, I drove to the dealer to bond with my car. I'm positive that March 2006 had over 100 days. I started to wonder if, in my mind, I'd blown the qualities of this car out of proportion. April 1st came (I couldn't sleep the whole night before). It was time. I had arranged with the dealer that they pick up my wife and me so we could savour the first drive in the Boxster together. My shaking hands had trouble signing the papers. FINALLY all the paperwork was done and the salesman was done going over the controls and features with me. My dream was coming true.

It was a chilly 35 degree day with a stiff breeze right from the North Pole. I looked at my wife and asked if she'd mind if we put the top down for at least the first part of the drive. Her reply: "Well it IS a convertible!" That was an incredible drive home.

Since the first twist of the key with my left hand, my love of the Boxster has done nothing but continue to grow. Every time I get in, I marvel at how everything is just where it's supposed to be for the maximum driving experience. The seats, comfortable, but firm enough to easily drive stretches of 500 or more miles per day. The shifter - right there were it belongs. The seating and pedal position are as if the designers at Porsche asked me where I wanted them and that's where they put them. Getting into the Boxster is like slipping on my favourite pair of sneakers and I'm ready to walk, dance, run, drive or whatever else I feel like doing. And, it can all be done to the intoxicating Symphony in Flat Six. It has always exceeded my expectations. I wanted to keep this car forever.

Alas. Things change. It seems that, what to me is an integral part of my driving enjoyment, is disappearing at a frightening rate. Automatics, including PDK, are taking over. PDK, which admittedly is a fabulous piece of engineering, is being chosen for various reasons: need an extra couple of tenths at the track, too much shifting in stop and go traffic, don't have the co-ordination to shift and people even say that they're just too lazy to shift. All valid reasons to purchase PDK. Fewer and fewer people want the driving involvement that a manual provides. Without a manual, I know I can't achieve what I call the Zen of driving. You become one with the car and dance through the curves to the sound of that beautiful flat six.

So, what happens if I do want to get a new car sometime in the future and a manual is no longer an option?

After some long soul searching, I decided to custom order a new car to hopefully see me a long way down the road. After close to a year of wearing out the Porsche configurator, testing cars with various options and quizzing people, I've finally come up with the ultimate (for me) Porsche.

I just want to thank a few people who've given me input and patiently answered my questions to help in my decision making. Thanks, Roger in PEI, Laz, lawdevil, MikenOH and of course Pedro.

I made a deal to trade, but keep the CURVEN8R until CURVEN8R2 arrives. I also have the option of selling CURVEN8R myself before or when the new car comes in. The new car is a June production, so CURVEN8R will go on sale sometime in July. My one hope is that I can find someone who will appreciate just how great a roadster it is so they can get as much enjoyment out of it as I have while giving it the TLC that it deserves.

Interestingly, a friend sent me a couple of pictures he took at this year's Detroit Auto Show and said, "Here's a picture of your new Boxster, Guenter." It was the right colour and wheels.

We drove up to them and took a few photos on my I-phone. They looked like a million bucks!!

Amazing lines, and from the rear end , very interesting. When they saw me taking photos one of them accelerated at an amazing rate and then slowed down just as fast.

Both cars looked to be WRAPPED and one of them had some road rash,, they looked to be test mules for sure.. .

this is how my beloved 986 sat before the incident...

now I have two damaged shocks, shock mounts and wheels... so i need some replacement parts, and here is where everyoune who can help on the boards comes in...

I checked the rack and the PSS9 might do the trick for me, nonetheless I will have these new coilovers siting on top of some 13 year old components so I need advise on some items...

Shock mounts, which ones?

My tech tells that I need the sawybar droplinks as well, any suggestions?

Last but not least the lower control arms, they seem to be in order but still they are 13 years old, should I go for the adjustable ones?

I need to put togheter this package fast as the sits at the dealer as we speak, I hope some of you can give me some good input, thanks.

Oil temps never exceeded 250; 240-245 was typical while running 20 minute session in 80 deg. temps and, of course, the temp gauge never moved over 200-- amazing don't you think

1) Is the brake wear sensor "mileage driven", so that it goes off after a certain mileage, or does it actually reflect the condition of the pads? The car just turned 45K and it seems like a coincidence that the light came on at that moment...,

2) Are Tygrave's instructions for doing a brake job on the 986 usable on the 987? And, if not, has anyone posted similar instructions for changing the pads on an 05 987S?

3) When I changed the pads on my 986, I didn't change the wear sensors. How many miles can I drive on the old pads before I damage the sensors? (like, could I drive to BRBS and get Pedro to do them at the Tech Session? :)-D Actually, I'm just concerned about driving the car locally until I can change the pads.

He had one sensor replaced last week at a local garage. The mechanic was under the impression that he had to get the code off the old unit to reprogram the new?? The local mechanic call a local Porsche dealer and spoke to the service rep. Turns out all you need to do is remove the old and install the new which is what we did on one wheel. Dealer wanted $192 per sensor, and the local garage charged me $55. The sensor is a 433 mhz and made in Germany. Well, after driving around for 30 minutes or so, still no reading.

He did the resets on the OBC as per the manual.

Am I maybe missing some other micro switch that is not working and needs to be engaged for the top to go up? The parking brake sensor must be working as the motor works going down. Is the double relay, a "double" so that it relays one direction when it is pushed "down" top and the other half relays in the other direction when it is pushed "up" top. I think it must be the double relay? HELP?????? I have been searching the web all over and could not find a clear answer so hopefully some experts here can help me. Note: it is for a Honda 03 Accord (non-Boxster)

Anyway, with UV dye I found out my AC condenser is leaking (bad design) so I replaced the condenser and the receiver. The manual call for 25 ml (condenser), 10 ml (receiver) of oil (PAG 46 = ND-OIL-8??) to be added after I replaced them. It is straight forward. However, I also did a vacuum with my air pump to make sure there is no more leak. Someone on thew web said if I do a vacuum, it would suck out all the oil in the system and leave it bone dry. The total amount of oil is 160 ml (5 1/3 fl-oz). So simple question: should I add 35 ml (for condenser+receiver) or the whole 160 ml? I know I do not want to add too much oil,

I know I can take it to the shop but the feeling of DIY is much more satisfying (and I know: I messed up most of the times but I learn it that way :-)))

Edit, here's a shot of where the screw goes (circled). Also, do others with more experience agree that this mess could be from a bad tube or oring? The car (2003 base) has 100k miles on it. I last replaced the plugs at about 60k. It was about 4 years ago. I forget the mileage and whether or not I replaced the o-rings or tubes.

My stock HU, is sometimes having problems with the screen. Sometimes it's really dim. I wiggle it and it goes back to normal illumination. Or it could be my 40yr old eyes, and the fact I wear polarized clipons.
