on PPBB I had selected some sort of option that, when I logged on, the messages that were at the top of the forum were the new posts and ones I had already read that had new replies. I can't seem to duplicate that on the new s/w.
It may have been a function where the PPBB s/w used cookies and I was reconnecting without a log in and directly to a forum rather than to the way we do now. But I swear it survived browser reloading and even reboot...but not log off.
I'll live with it but just wondering if someone else has stumbled on a better combination of settings options.

You can stop swearing Mike. 
At the top of the message list, just click Turn floating threads on
