Tech Question

I have a 2000 986 with about 80k miles. Recently, I was driving a little aggressively and shifted from second to third gear. With the clutch out in third, the RPMs were increasing but the car was not accelerating. When I got out of the car, there was a pretty strong burning smell from the rear. I have a feeling that my clutch and/or flywheel is going but just wanted to confirm my suspicions. The car does have its original clutch. Thanks.
Clutch disc.

Change the pressure plate and throwout bearing, too. I think there's a possibility that the clutch disc got oil on it from a leaky engine seal. You might find the clutch slipping when you accelerate going uphill in a high gear.

It could have just overheated

If you abuse the clutch, it becomes less effective. Often the problem goes away after the friction surface cools down.
He did say, (ok, maybe euphemistically,) that he was driving "... a little aggressively..."
