What will happen? I recall people saying you could just pull it off and minimal spillage would occur. But i also recall at a TSBL once, someone took my sage advice and got a face-full of black stuff.

So, under normal circumstances, on a 986, and i want to:

1. remove a small over-fill, or
2. get a small sample of oil, or
3. change the filter but not the oil

can i simply take it off with a catch-pan beneath?

ps: if anyone cares i have a oil analysis report from my Audi S6. I'll post it at some point with the germane stuff

You can just remove it and very little oil will spill. I take out the filter and examine it for metal bits mid way through the oil change interval aas added insurance against an IMSB failure.
thanks much! *NM*
