"Least" best driver's album? Best?
JM-Stamford,CT - Friday, 17 December, 2010, at 10:06:33 am
So last night -- I am in de-stress mode.

Pop in David Gilmour's - "On an Island" CD.

VERY relaxing. But not exactly a disc that I could ever listen to while driving. My son was chillin' with me....

Then he put on HIS music. Just happens to be the "Cars" disney CD. Definitely a good driving disc.

So..... a Friday poll --- What is your best and worst Driving music?

My favorite is Metallica - Ride the Lightning -- Specifically "Sanitarium"

Worst might be Sarah McLaughlin, or any "put you to sleep" music. Think Enya, Tangerine Dream, Old Floyd....
The Top Gear Driving CDs are pretty good
Red_Lightnin! - Friday, 17 December, 2010, at 11:02:14 am
Some of the tracks are a little "Jeremy Clarkson" but overall a pretty good selection of driving music for an album.

Of course, for a single-band album, nothing beats AC/DC - just great "stomp the gas and take me to jail music"

When I want good driving music, but a little mellower than AC/DC, I usually go for the Pretenders Greatest Hits, but Chrissie Hynde is an acquired taste.

Otis Redding - Sitting on the dock of the bay
Super Tramp - Take the long way home
Tears for Fears - Everybody wants to rule the world
Don Henley - The boys of summer
REO Speedwagon - Keep the fire burning
Peter Frampton - Show me the way
Queen - Don't stop me now
America - Ventura highway
Creedence clearwater - Looking out my back door
Doobie brothers - drift away
Keith Urban - love, pain and the whole crazy thing
Mr. Mr. - Broken wings
Roy Orbinson - Pretty Woman
Dire Straits - Telegraph road
The Cardigans - My Favourite game
The Cars - drive
Tom Petty - Running down a dream
Mark Knopfler - Cleaning my gun
Mark Knopfler - Speedway at Nazareth
JJ Cale - Call me the breeze
Jackson Browne - Running on Empty

Any suggestions? smiling smiley

depends. If taking a road trip, i go mellow in the morning for the first hour or so. By then, I'm awake and got a groove going so it's time to crank up the volume and tempo. No, real best or worst. Mainly, it's a mood thing.

After just seeing Roger Waters perform The Wall 5x, I would have to say What Shall We Do Now and Young Lust are very high energy songs. I could drive forever to Comfortable Numb. Nothing beats Jimmy Buffett's live version of Southern Cross on a nice beautiful sunny day.

Kind of interesting to see the Diversity of Opinion on what constitutes driving music - and how different people's tastes are.

I kind of thought there might be.

I really need energy when driving -- so mellow is OUT.

I don't need aggression, but it helps... Strangely - I find it relaxing too.

same here with the energy. I'm with Red on the "stomp the gas and take me to jail music". If I want to drive slow, I'll take the wife's SUV.

And, my wife likes ABBA and that does it for me too.

My driving tunes playlist is getting rather lengthy--currently at 75 songs (and 5.7 hours play time). The common thread is songs I like and a lot have something loosely about cars. Some obvious like "Life is a Highway". Some less so, like "Wango Tango" ("your face is a Maserati...") ). Others--"It has a good beat....you can dance to it".

You get the idea.

Great list Paul. Leave Your Hat On by Joe Cocker is a great song - and I seem to remember it from a very memorable movie scene . . .

I noticed you don't have any Cars on your list - given the other songs, might I suggest Bye Bye Love, Shake it Up, or You Might Think?

I cannot stand the Cars--Freshman year in college, a guy across the hall in the dorm played the Cars endlessly. 31 years later and I still cringe at Cars songs. smiling smiley

I can't get the link to display in full, but do a Google search for

Empire Brass Quintet - Hopper Dance!

and give the Youtube video a listen. You won't be hearing the subterranean bass, but it's a hint of the majesty of the piece. The visuals aren't too much of a distraction in this case.

Presently have over 3,000 songs on the Ipod hooked up in the car so when I need a wake up in the morning I stick on ACDC with Thunderstruck. I also need foot and wheel tapping music when I drive the Box. Lately I have been into the Killers and Brandon Flowers, find it to be great driving music. As for least anything slow, boring and that includes all the George Straight my wife always wants to listen to.LOL
