In Australia here, I have two great offers right now,

1 x 2004 Boxster (not S) but has a load of S options fitted- Dealer will trade my 320i BMW and the change over is $17K which is pretty good as this offers a top trade for the BMW. As you will see below, the 2004 has low kms and is the glass window/glove box model.

1 x 2000 Boxster S with 80,000kms and has no crusie control and has an issue with the key not unlocking the doors with the remote.(could be just the battery of course) The Boxster S is $34000 so a good price by australian standards.

So, the km's are of course an issue, but also the 2.7 versus added performance of the 3.2 on the S...
The Non S 2.7 litre has S brakes added, 17"wheel upgrade, S badges etc, its te 5 speed that is one fo the few signs that gives it a way as a non S.

The model year 2000 was the first 986S produced.
The model year 2004 was the last 986 produced.

MY 2000 986S had 252 HP with 3.2L engine.
MY 2004 986 had 255 HP with 2.7L engine.

I think the newer '04 is the better choice.

Great advice that I had no idea about to be very honest, the performance comparison of 2000 S to 2004 standard boxster is something staggering.
I'm so glad I listed this coments i did as the ability to offload my BMW as well is a real plus. My BMW is really not overly attractive as there are just so many available right now and I have had it advertised for a month and only one enquiry. So, the trade in is a plus for sure, the price of $50K here in Australia is about right, of course, much cheaper in the USA, and the kms is excellent at 38,000.
The fact the chap previously added Red Boxster S Brakes, Suspension and badges is probably not a negative and the wheels upgrade is pretty cool too.
Would have loved the 6 speed but a small concession.

... S brakes, they've just been painted red.
The S/996 brakes have a larger diameter cross-drilled rotors.
Nothing wrong with the brakes it has, but just to make sure they're not selling you something that's not there.

Good observation on the brakes, the dealer has stated they have been upgraded, might be able to play with price a bit on that point.....

The 2004 is the better deal. BTW I had a 2001 Boxster S and I would have preferred a 5 speed versus 6 speed . Less gears= more user friendly and less confusing.
