981 and black plastic pieces, how to address?
Jim in Iowa - Saturday, 6 October, 2012, at 3:00:32 pm
The 981 has a number of exterior black plastic pieces, the rear diffuser, the side intakes, the under door mirror area, and the nose slats and center section which used to duct to the center radiator. While these black plastic pieces look good when new, as the plasticiser cooks out, the sun works on them, they eventually turn dark grey, then a bleached-looking middle gray.

While there are products to try and prevent this, e.g., 303 Protectant, and others to bring black "back to life," it's usually a losing battle, with the chalky gray winning.

On the 986s and 987s, these pieces were already painted, and this wasn't an issue, as the paint and clearcoat hold up much better than the raw plastic satin black finish.

While you can have all but the nose pieces painted body color ($1,700 extra), the center nose concave blank comes only in "raw" black.

What's the best way to address this piece? Do any of the clear bras make a section that goes over it? Have it painted with a satin polyurethene when new? Assume it's a wear item (expensive, no doubt) and replace it periodically (nose has to come apart to do it.)

Thoughts?
