Question -- What's your other ride?
m4240z - Monday, 8 July, 2013, at 8:47:35 am
Boxsters are great cars, but let's face it, they're not the most practical if you're carrying more than one person -- so what is/are your other ride(s)?

My current second (and only other) ride is an Audi A6, which is, a luxobarge, and is pretty much the distinct opposite of the Boxster. Slick fast eight speed automatic transmission, nary a whisper from the outside the passenger compartment, and isolating from the road, with numb (but accurate) steering. I don't mind driving it, and in fact rather like it, when the traffic and road conditions conspire to make a top down cruise with a wailing flat six impossible.
my practical car is a cayman

My wife's Prius, although, I'm trying to talk her into a Tesla, but she doesn't want to have two expensive cars in the garage. Glad one of us is practical when it comes to such things.
What do you mean not practical?...

... it's one of the most practical and versatile cars out on the roads.
You just have to get a bit creative:

I've carried a full set of tires.
Other things carried are: a large animal cage:

my mountain bike:

my track trailer with a full set of racing tires, two 10' x 10' tents, tools, jack, 2 chairs and spares:

It's also my very fast track car:

my movie-maker:

my dog carrier

I've also fit a pressure washer in the rear trunk.
How can anyone say it's not practical?

Have to agree with Pedro. The Boxster has lots of storage space for trips - even if you have a wife who love shoes and purses. We had no problem carrying everything we needed on our 18 day, 7,500 mile California trip.

Lots of places in the cabin to store little things (laptop, cameras, maps, GPS, etc, etc.) Then there are the two big trunks.

Front trunk (that's mostly for my stuff). You can see that there was still room to fit more small things in each trunk by the time we finished packing.

Layer 1 - wash bucket, extra drinks, cooler, camera

Layer 2 - clothes, extra treats and the pink snack-sack.

Rear trunk (mostly my wife's things.)

Layer 1 Still room for extra drinks and stuff

Layer 2 a few clothes for special nights out.

About the only thing we couldn't fit in was the

I haul quite a bit in my Boxster because it has more storage space than our other two practical cars (e.g,, 6 x 40lb sacks of water softener salt fit nicely in the boot).

MY OTHER RIDES
1). 2010 Mercedes SLK 350 that my wife drives.
2). 1974 MGB, least space of the three. Used sometimes to go get gas for lawn mowers.

With the Boxster top down you can handle most things you need to haul.

My most practical Porches were the 924 and 944s. I used to haul 4'x8' sheet rock in the 924.

I kind of figured it was in that little place -- but it's a big hike from California -- the south end is appears quite different from the end I visited which is closer to Vegas.

That would be one of my bucket list drives.

Hmmmm. Didn't realize it was a big hike from California. Maybe it depends in which part of California you live. winking smiley

It was part of our California trip. At that point we were about 2,200 miles and 3 days from home (about 100 miles north of Buffalo).
Re: What do you mean not practical?...
m4240z - Wednesday, 10 July, 2013, at 4:02:35 pm
I guess it's all relative -- it would be a big hike for me, as I'm about 100 miles north of Buffalo, but as an incremental amount from Ontario, I guess it wouldn't be that much. Amazing that you made it there and back in eighteen days.
And years before Porsche's Everyday Engineering ads, I lugged 40 pound bags of sand and gravel in each of the 986's trunks.

Cosmetically not so hot, but the motor doesn't use more than maybe a half quart every 3000 miles, and I just had square tubing run along each side of the belly pan. Probably stiffer than when it was new. (Even back then the doors would stick when jacked.) Just had a new clutch kit put in and a new radiator.

My driveway looks like a used car lot.
1999 Porsche Boxster - occasional daily driver and track car
1998 Porsche 993 - garage queen
2002 Nissan Altima - wife's daily driver - bought it new and she just refuses to let it go
2004 Mini Cooper S JCW - wife's fun car
1998 Ford Contour - Chumpcar race car
2010 Toyota Tundra - hey - I live in the South - got to have a truck! Comes in handy for hauling the track cars and the boats (don't even get me started on the boat list!)
1996 Pace Arrow Motorhome - impulse buy to use at the track - very convenient but that 460 V8 Ford is a PIG!!

Let's see - 7 cases of wine, 2 Newfoundlands, 2 horses: which goes where?

7 cases of wine - 987
2 Newfoundlands - Scion xD
2 Horses - behind Nissan Pathfinder.

The wine capacity was greatly enhanced by the packaging into "pizza box" cases of 2 rows of 6 bottles...

Since the Boxster is a Base model, I tried putting the trailer receiver into the tailpipe, but could not figure out how to get the load leveling bars to compensate for the weight

2002 Yukon - my nasty, smelly fishing and hauling truck. Its nice to have a vehicle where mud, mildew, clutter and cigar smoke only add to the overall "ambience".

Wife's 2007 Audi A3 3.2 V6 Avant
Some times the 2000 Audi S4

For fun, the Boxster, a 1963 T6B 365 coupe, a 1986 944 Turbo, 1967 911S, a 2004 GT3, and a 1957 P133 tractor.

For winter a 1995 Audi S6 and when I want to play in the dirt, an old Case 580 Super E backhoe.

The Vette is faster, has more luggage space, than the Boxster, but lacks the Boxster's intimate connection with the road. The Vette steering feels dead after driving the Boxster. The Vette is immune to hail damage and door dings, which can be handy in certain situations. The Honda can't be beat for getting you there in a Minnesota winter.

My other ride is a 2013 Audi S4. Much faster, quieter, and comfortable than the Boxster. This is our retirement car for taking trips to see the kids, travel, etc. But nothing beats the Boxster for driving here in on the twisty roads in Yellowstone Country.

as you say, not for more than 2, or two with much luggage, or a big dog (Anja does not fit, unless she sits up and looks over the windscreen)

My other car is a 2002 Audi S6 avant, with ST coilovers and track brakes pads and fluid.

Comfy, reliable, roomy, practical, and pretty darn fast (even at VIR and Pocono!)

Just after i got the wagon i decided that was my license to get something little and fun. before that i tried to combine the two in one vehicle, which is a compromise (duh)
