Hmmmmm.... rhetorical I know.

This is another variation on the poser vs enthusiast question, but I've been thinking about this more now that I moved from a Boxster to a 911. Maybe a beter question is: What is the percentage of torque wrench ownership by Porsche model?

After floating on Boxster/Caymen boards and 911 boards, I get the distinct impression that the average Boxster Caymen owner is more of a gear head than a 911 owner - GT3 excluded.

Ok, talk amongst yourselves....

When was the last time it was calibrated?

When was the last time you used it? For what?

Do you own another one of differing range (and generally different handle length)?

In an ideal world, sure, along with a 2-post lift and a toterhome.

I use a 4' extension on a breaker bar (not a Torque Wrench) and put about 70 lbs of force on it. Anything with that kind of torque is not all that precise.

I would need to check, but the torque is not 400 lb-ft, although it is very large. 340 if memory serves.

Use it all the time when I do something under the car and I can get better access with a wheel off. I don't have a lift to I still have to lie on the ground.
I think a better question is ...

I agree with Mike in that you need at least three (probably four) different size torque wrenches to cover the range of settings, from a couple of lb-in to several hundred lb-ft.
Happy Porsche'ing,

I have one, a 1/2 inch drive. Most things I can do by feel, but it's nice to verify using the torque wrench. With over 30 years working on cars/motorcycles, I don't recall (back in the day) so many things having specific torque settings. The only time I recall using a torque wrench back then was when I rebuilt a 327 Chevy engine and when torquing the head bolts to spec on my Yamaha after a top end rebuild..
What's a torque wrench?

Sheesh! I own two, one for plugs - smaller range, and the bigger one for whatever. I have never had them calibrated but I always release the tension in them. My last use was for my winter tires on my Porsche and wife's Lexus and before that it was my Porsche plugs.

Peace

I own two, a small one which I have not used for years and a bigger one (40-210 Nm = 30-150 Ft.lb.), which I use twice a year for swapping summer- and winter wheels. I never had them calibrated.
I got 2
986rgt - Thursday, 12 December, 2013, at 6:27:02 am
One is good for up to 100 ft lbs I think, the other is good for 700 or so I believe, great for torqueing wheel hub nuts at 550lbs!

But the big question is, "what happens when you use a crows foot with your torque wrench?" drinking smiley

Discuss....

I always use a torque wrench for critical fasteners. Absolutely clean threads, lightly lubricated fasteners and a torque wrench and I have never stripped a fastener, had anything come loose or had anything leak. It's takes a bit more work to clean all fasteners and threads, but it is wel worth the effort.

I last remember using it on a car to replace a head gasket on my 74 MGB in 80 or 81. I must have done a good job because the car still runs good.

4; 3 click type of varying ranges and one beam type.
Not counted: broken beam type that I use as a breaker bar.
I'm also not counting a small torque key, a torque wrench preset to 5 Nm, which I use for my bicycles.

Yep, I got one, but seldom use it. I believe it goes to 200# or so. I went without one for so many years that I still tighten things by "feel".
I have two. I could use a smaller one too.
JM-Stamford,CT - Tuesday, 17 December, 2013, at 3:55:11 pm
I use them on any internal work other delicate stuff.
