Fortunately he was talking about the electronic gadget companies (Google, Apple, etc) and what to invest in. Not the mechanicals of our cars. More toys in our cars were where the market is going he felt because we have so much time in our cars with so little to do. Oh good, more distracted drivers.
The contrast he was making was to in-a-house gadget makers. You can just wander over and punch the thermostat if you want the temp changed (even though Honeywell now has a bluetooth connected thermostat). The odd thing to me was he mentioned control from a desktop rather than a pad or phone.

Exactly; nothing to do in your car-- except paying attention to what you are supposed to be doing, driving the car!

Better yet, get a TechnoTooth and stream your favorite station even if you're in Nowhere.
