are these front or rear brakes?
Sheriff John - Saturday, 29 January, 2011, at 3:19:18 pm
For a 1998 Boxster. I found these in the garage. I need to order a complete front and rear set for my son and I'm having a hard time getting him to stop by for a 12 hour so I can check. You know how that goes!

So can anyone tell if these are front or rear brakes?

thanks,
I jut compared them to an old set of fronts....

..from my 2004 and they look identical. but the problem is that the fronts and rears, as i recall, are very similar.

Why nto google the part number stamped on them? I cant read it

Grant
I tried, but no luck. Partial number
Sheriff John - Saturday, 29 January, 2011, at 4:01:48 pm
the numbers are partially worn off. Nothing is coming up. They are aftermarket pads. I'll just have to get the "boy' to come over. smiling smiley

I know, the front and backs are very similar.

thx,

SJ
on the top (Yours shows 1 slot). I just replaced pads all around and I have not removed the vibration dampeners yet. So I can easily make the comparison.
I dont think so. Here's a pic of my old front pad

looks nearly identical. Where are the "3 slots"?

Grant

Here are pics of mine. You may be right.

My pads are not the factory installed ones. I have replaced my pads (and rotors) a few times since new. They could be the latest generation (with integral dampeners).

The fronts should have ...

... a pin on the top that fits into the notch on the caliper.
These don't have the pin so I'm assuming they are rears.

Do all front pads have the pins?
Keithb11 - Monday, 31 January, 2011, at 11:03:08 am
I just did my breaks this weekend and my fronts did not have the pins. The pads I removed did
I haven't seen pins for a while either
Sheriff John - Monday, 31 January, 2011, at 1:30:40 pm
But I haven't used factory pads in a while either. I can't say if pins mean that they are factory.

If and when I can get the boy over, I'll post "the word" on these pads!

The width of the pads is the same (front and rear).
The difference is that the fronts are a little taller.
On my car I installed 996 caliper and rotors up front but left the rear brakes stock.
What I'm doing in order to get a little more bite is use the 986 front pads in the rear.

I see the number 2407 on your photo. And a partial number .351. on Grant's photo. Those are both likely 986 front pads, because:

Pagid pad numbers: 986 front = 2407. 986S front = 2405. 986 and 986S rear = 2406.

Porsche pad numbers: 986 front = 986.351.939.xx. 986S front = 996.351.939.xx. 986 and 986S rear = 996.352.939.xx.

Some details: brake part numbers, etc.
