Lug studs
grant - 9 years ago
I am considering converting my track car to lug studs.

Unfortunately, i have read poor reviews of the quality of the rennline product, and i have seen many failures of (unknown brand) lug studs at the track.

Any experience with suggested brands? Install tips to avoid issues?

of lug studs and the many failures you have seen with "unknown brands" of lug studs at the track, my best advice on how to avoid any issues would be to not switch to using lug studs.

remember, user error (over torquing, etc) leads to lots of problems.

Tried and true is Track Studs from Apex Competition Systems. I believe the 80mm are plenty long. The bullet nose are probably the best for easy-on with the wheel, but the other ones would be fine, too.

There was a problem with a popular SPB-specific supplier site selling studs along with the wrong shaped nuts! The rounded contour of the nut head was for a different type of wheel and so did not seat correctly/fully on the cup of the wheel hole on 986 wheels. Make sure the nuts are the right ones for Boxster wheels.
As Marc noted, OEM bolts are likely the safest and best tested, and i may just deal with them.

My local race-prep specialist has a set that they use - and use personally. I suspect with proper install and use problems go down.

I will also look at APEX. Where do you buy them?

Directly from Apex, I think: Apex Track Studs

I was told in no uncertain terms by an expert also to get the steel lug nuts. It looks to me like the 14mm radius ball seat are the ones for Porsche wheels.
pro series 80/81mm studs.

Now, they have two porsche nuts. The $2.00 steel ones and the $2.79 "pro" (alloy?) ones.

I was planning on the steel ones, and i think you are makign that doubly clear?

... they are absolutely the best.
MSI Racing Studs
Used by NASCAR Sprint Cup cars, but ...

... they are expensive.
About $700 to outfit a Boxster with studs and nuts.
Let me know if you want some. We're ordering more next week.
Happy Boxstering,

Racecar spelled backwards is Racecar

"Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting" ... Steve McQueen as Michael Delaney in "LeMans"

"If you wait, all that happens is that you get older"... Mario Andretti

"Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose" ... Ayrton Senna
thanks for the info though.
