This is the car the smaller Boxster variant (if it happens) will be competeing with. Having said that, the car looks tiny--154" long relative to the 981 at 172".
Interesting.

I like the design overall, though the sharp creases on the engine bonnet don't do it for me, and the squinty headlights are tragic.

Mazda seems adept at trying just a little too hard with its styling. Shame there isn't someone there to come in near the end and say "ok, that's looking good, now we're just going to dial it back a bit".

Often less is more.

Conversely, more can be too much.
