Happened to be over in the 981 forum on another board and there was a posting of pictures of the next generation Cayman and Boxster altitude testing and a quote that the driver of the Cayman under test said it was a 4-cyl turbo.

Get em while you can.

That has been the word from Porsche. The refreshed 981 will have a turbo 4. It sounds like only the GT4 and Boxster Spyder will have flat sixes. From the way I understand it, the change is coming in 2016. Not sure if that means MY 2016 or in 2016 with MY 2017. We should know within a month or so when they change the configurator to the 2016 models, I imagine though, that Porsche will make some sort of splashy announcement about how the turbo 4 is an improvement over the flat six.

There was an interview with Walter Röhrl where he had seen/heard the car. He said he hoped they would change the sound because it sounded like a VW.

I preceded your advice, I got it while I could. smiling smiley

And in that same interview Walter said that he has a Spyder.
I'm sure he was referring to the NEW 3.8L Spyder, not the 3.4 from 2010.

My guess is that both the GT4 and the Spyder will only be offered for one model year.
Then ALL Boxsters and Caymans will have the 4 cylinder Turbos.

Happy Boxstering,
Pedro

A Porsche turbocharged 4 may be quick and reasonably powerful. Four cylinder engines have come a LONG way from the days of the Vauxhall Viva and Chevy Chevette.

But in the end, it's a four cylinder, and no matter how technologically advanced, it will never be a six. Profound, I know. winking smiley

Well, according to Andreas Preuninger, head of Porsche GT division, it seems that there will continue to be naturally aspirated flat sixes for some time, at least in the GT4 (check out this interview starting around 18:35). Maybe the Spyder, but it doesn't come out of the GT division.

And according to this article, Porsche has already sold 2 years worth of GT4 production in the UK and Germany.

And it seems that all the other Boxsters and Caymans with get those flat four turbos.

So, yes. Get 'em while you can.
Does the turbo 4 come out as a 2016 or 2017 model? This is starting to have an impact on my thinking about picking up a new Boxster. I have zero interest in a turbo 4, no matter how good it might be.

That's the $64,000 question. As I said previously, we'll know once the configurator is changed to show the 2016 models. When they do change over, I'm sure that there will also be an announcement. For anyone wanting to order a car, they'll have to do so before the change or before the dealer allotment runs out.
I guess that's why we have to put the more expensive gas into Canadian cars. eye rolling smiley
The mental picture of and older and gentler G-man in a 4 cylinder PDK Boxster, because that's all that's available for under $100K US or CND, is a disturbing image.

Better continue to keep your baby in hibernation half the time, G-man. smileys with beer

Much to my dismay, it takes $83,840 CDN to buy $63,900 U.S dollars. sad smiley

Type $83,840 in the top box (select Canadian), select 'US dollar' in the 'to' box, click on 'cash rate', and then 'convert'.

Yup. You're better off using that $83,840 CDN to purchase a nicely optioned Boxster S. Add to that, if the Canadian $ continues to stay low, I have a feeling that Porsche Canada will raise prices on new cars.

Back in 2006, the base price of a Boxster in Canada was $64,100. When the CDN dollar was on par with the US dollar, Porsche ended up discounting and then dropping the price. Don't recall the exact amount, but today, a Boxster starts at $59,400 CDN.
I agree, G-man, on all counts. Get one while they are available, and before the price goes up. Having said that, the CDN dollar is actually performing well internationally - so, Germany isn't actually selling us cars on the cheap. The problem, if one can call it that, is the US, one of the last bastions of free enterprise (god bless them), has an economy, and currency, that are on fire.

Remarkable that you can recall the MSRP of a 2006 Boxster. winking smiley

Remember that great Porsche website link that allowed us to 'sit in' (and slightly above, too, as I recall) the Boxster as it drove through the twisties? If ever there was superb car-porn, that was it. smiling smiley

BTW, I'm waiting on a friend in Ontario who owns a GT Silver 981, manual trans, to sell me his when he trades 'up' to a more powerful turbo-4. Maybe I'd be better off buying lottery tickets..

I still have the window sticker of that 2006 Boxster. smiling smiley

Yes. I remember that video. I think I put between 300 and 400K miles on that car while I was waiting for mine and when mine was hibernating. Not sure if that's why it's not there any more. winking smiley

On that last point, if you and I are thinking of the same friend, your odds of winning that lottery are MUCH higher.

So true, and I don't even buy lottery tickets. smiling smiley
Spent some time with a local dealer last week. 2015 Boxster slots are gone. Does have a 2016 build slot for July delivery. So this seems to answer the question that the turbo 4's won't happen until 2017. Also I had some configs on the Porsche site and when I went to open one of the up the other day, I was asked if I wanted to update the model year. So it sounds like Porsche is keeping the 981 through 2016. Good news!

For my 15 Boxster S with 6 speed. Should be here beginning of July end of June. Spent WAY to much. Lots of those expensive options. But you only live once. I know that for a fact as I am now a widower.
