I would check 2 things ...

I just noticed that my fog lights are coming on when I open the car door - they stay on for a few minutes and then shut off. Not all the time, but seems to happen after its been sitting for a few days. I haven't the foggiest idea (no pun intended ) what could be causing it to happen.

Any ideas as to what the cause could be?

Are there any other seemingly unrelated electronic glitches? Any problems getting the ignition switch/out or on/off. If it's any of these things, it could be the electronic part of the ignition switch.

Once, the remote wouldn't open the car doors. I attributed it to a dying battery - its 16 years old!

Your lights may have a setting for "Home," which is a setting that keeps the headlights on for a set period of time if you lock your car. Safety feature for when you come home at night and the house is all dark.

Nope, even if I did this happens when I open the car, not when I close/lock it.

That wasn't a feature in the 986.

... don't need no stinkin' Torque Vectoring

Besides Guenter's suggestion of the electronic side of the ignition switch (thanks , BTW) any other possibilities?

If I go with that as the issue anyone know the cost of repair?
