According to Karl Ludvigsen's Excellence Was Expected 2003 Edition Volume 3 page 1356, "Series production began on Monday, August 18, 1996, after the summer break." It was on the former 928 line at Zuffenhausen.

50 early production cars were flown by Lufthansa 747-200 to Boxster Country, Scottsdale Az. for dealer and enthusiast introductions, Sept 11 to Oct 2, 1996.

I took delivery of my 1997 2.5 Boxster at the beginning of April 1997, and after replacing it with a 2000 S model, have own a Boxster ever since.

So join me in wishing the Porsche Boxster a happy 20 years of production!
I was about to say it was the smartest move since the 356 since of course there likely wouldn't be a Porsche company had the 356 not been a hit, but I'll stick with "one of the smartest moves".

I'd like to see, as time progresses, the company offer the same engine options in the Boxster (roadster and coupe) as in the rear engine model.

I've now had my Boxster for 12 years and continue to love it.Long live the Boxster!
