I have an "03 but did not have this problem with my top. However, a year ago the fabric that attaches to the bottom of the rear window separated from the glass. My options were fixing the top at a cost of $1000 since the whole top had to be removed fixed and re attached (it was pretty worn after 12 years) or I was offered an aftermarket top installed for $1600 which I had done. When the top was off I had it checked for any irregularities that might rip or pull on the new top and it was ok.

I used a fabric patch on the inside but it's basically the same thing. I haven't given it much further thought.

I removed them more than a year ago and there have been no ill effects. So far in all the discussions on 986Forum and here nobody seems to know why they are there in the first place. My guess is they were there to help the material fold properly as the top is lowered but it seems to me that once they grab the material even slightly they start to work their way into it and actually stretch the fabric producing the bulge and eventually the hole.
So if Pedro is removing them and I did mine a year ago with no ill effects that's good enough for me. And they can always be put back if necessary.
