Is it correct that if you've got the Bose System in your car and want to install an aftermarket GPS you need to bypass the amplifier?

I'd appreciate any recommendations for a moderately priced unit with Pre-installed maps (prefer Garmin) ; traffic receiver, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Don't need all the latest bells and whistles, but would like something with good resolution and easy to use controls. Also, where do you get a face-plate for our "oddly" designed dash?
