Stiff ignition switch
Ed B - 7 months ago
This s in the '04 GT3, Same switch as the Boxster. The car isn't driven much, It's got 13k miles on it.
When I went to start it after a long winter's nap, the key was very hard to turn. Turning the wheel to take the pressure off had no effect. It was not like the steering wheel lock was against the pin. After a several hour drive with a couple of stops and restarts, it is still extremely stiff. I'm guessing it's the steering lock mechanism. Any way to free it up or lube?

I've tried to lube a few using graphite.
You need to remove the whole assembly to get to the end where the locking pin is. That's where I've found that it tends to bind.
I've had mixed results. A couple have worked great after the graphite, a few others did not improve and I had to replace the assembly.
If you're doing the work yourself it may be good to try and lube it.
If you're paying labor it may be better to just replace it and be done with.
