anyone here DIY top replacement on their early boxster?

I bought a top from autotops direct. I am looking for recommendations on how much double sided tape to buy for the project.

I will likely have to order in the 3m 06384 tape, Just was wondering 1, 2 or 3 rolls? I have a feeling it's pricey. Looking on the web, it looks like it comes in 5m or 5 yard rolls...

I believe the tape is the most critical part of the install, the weatherstripping adhesive and possibly spray adhesive could be a generic. Or at least, I didn't find strong recommendations on those products.

thanks,
Peter

You need to commuincate with Maurice aka schoir

He is the resident expert on all things top.

I just did my top. However, I elected to upgrade to the glass rear window by installing an '03, '04 model year top.
That was largely a plug and play operation and highly recommended (assuming you are not too far down the road.)

Search google : Maurice Boxster convertible top replacement

There are a tone of links.

i think the 03, 04 tops are pixie dust. Impossible to find at a decent price. I already bought the glass window fitment for the '01.
I paid roughly $1300. There were several available. Ranged between $900-2500
I recalled the invoice incorrectly.

The price was $1300 and included included the cost of a three spoke steering wheel with airbag and gold crest.
The roof itself cost less than $1000.
The shipping was expensive - $300. But the roof is an awkward size and shape. It needed to go on a truck and be delivered to a commercial garage.

I see some of the car-part.com roofs. They appear to be less expensive. I went to LA Dismantlers - figuring I paid a little more, but got Porsche specialists pulling and packing it. Who knows if it made a difference? DC Automotive was MUCH more expensive BTW.
I suspect there are a lot of choices.
Not really

I got mine for around $550 and I can see by searching on car-part.com that there are lots available in good condition.
Maurice is seldom if ever on the Porsche boards any more. Some of his write-ups are at [sites.google.com]
you'll need 2 rolls of the 3M 06384 to do the job. You will use about 1.3 rolls of it. I did not use any spray adhesive.
