My amazing 2001 986 Boxster S 6 speed is about to turn 20 years old (build date 02/2001), 55k miles. She runs perfectly, driven hard but virtually untouched mechanically except for filters, fluids and similar wear items (clutch / IMS / RMS are original). Time for a major service / 20th bday present, so looking for guidance on what to touch.  For reference, here's the official maintenance schedule which seems to ignore many important bits ...

- Must do: Plugs / coils, Accessory belt, fluids & pads, other common wear items
- Might do: AOS, Water pump, Fuel Filter, Gearbox oil
- Not gonna do (until I need a clutch): IMS, RMS, Clutch

Looking for guidance on the 'might do' group, which are known failure areas or items that don't have an official maintenance schedule. Looking for points of view on whether to address proactively / preemptively, or 'don't fix it if it ain't broke'.  Thx for the collective wisdom!

Hi,

Congrats on 20 years of Perma smiling.

I would change out your AOS and see if your water pump is giving you any signs of green stalactites. If so, I would replace it.

Keep enjoying for another 20 years!!

Thx @blkbox and @jmstamford

>> see if your water pump is giving you any signs of green stalactites
Are you saying check the pump itself to see if it's dripping?

>> AOS - it will go soon, so probably best to do it while you are in there.
Looks like a total PITA based on videos... anyone here done one themselves?

Thoughts based upon my 2000 2.7.

1) AOS - it will go soon, so probably best to do it while you are in there.
2) inspect the water pump. They have tendencies to go - unclear to me whether it is mileage or age driven.
3) check the coolant tank. They go too and when it happens you will have a sweet smelling trunk.
4) moisturize the seats and other leather. I am heading toward replacing the covers, so ....
5) inspect the LOOOOOng coolant hoses under the car. I had a "Y" shaped one fail. Better to have preventative maintenance
6) Lube the top mechanism.
7) clean the radiators
8) move the emergency trunk release while cleaning the rads.
9) check air in the spare
10) inspect the CV boots
11) replace brake/clutch fluid especially if not done recently
12) clean throttle body and the "cross tubes"

Something else might come to me, but I would start there.
