QuoteBobtesa This must be the information that was to come about Pedro's solution. If I read it correctly, it offers a means to add lubrication for the 987 IMS (that is not replaceable w/o MAJOR engine work). What is involved in doing this? Time, cost, required expertise at an indie shop? Pedro, I assume that you will post this on your garage site. Thanks, Bob Bob: This does offer a meaby MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
QuoteDunkirk ... Now here's the question: "There's a new IMS replacement out there. It is better. Costs twice as much as the old one. We should have that new gizmo in our shop in a few days." In other words, I'd be the first guy from their shop to try out the new IMS gizmo. They've done a ton of the "old" ones. You may be able to use a small pair of vise-grips, squeezing the pin about 1/4 inch away from the end. That should give you enough length for the pin to enter the lever and start to enter the steel rod. Then you can tap it in with a small hammer (or a drift). If that does not give you quite enough clearance, you can use the same method, but first grind down the leading edge of the pin at a steby MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
1. Porsche sells a soft cloth "insert" which you are supposed to put over the convertible top window from the outside before opening the top. That part is supposed to minimize scratches to the plastic window while it is down and folded over. You can probably use another soft cloth in place of the Porsche part with the same effect. 2. Quotegrant n/t Grant: I think Stefan was referring to lubricating the channels in which the black sliders at the end of the clamshell support arms ride back and forth. If you follow the clamshell support arms down, you will see the channels. You can spray some white lithium grease in those channels, or, if you want to splurge, get some Dupont Krytox in there. The problem that you describe with your convertible top is a very common one with 987's that are more than a few years old. Assuming that your fold placer string is intact (as mentioned in EricG's post), the reason your edges are not being pulled into their respective channels is because the small elastic straps (one on each side) that are behind the B-Pillar have lost their elasticity. Do the windows drop approximately 4 inches when you pull the convertible top latch handle down to begin the opening cycle? You should also check the two fuses that allow power to go to the convertible top motor: B6 (power to the double relay) and D3 (power to the electric motor). The main difficulty with "fixing" the clockspring assembly revolves around the way the ribbon cable is wound. It's very tricky to get it wound back up exactly the way it came from the factory. Regards, Maurice.by MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
Grant: I've had that fault code and wrote up my experience with the repair, although it was a few years ago. I ended up buying a used "clockspring assembly" and replacing it and that code 21 has never come back since. The removal and replacement is very straightforward, but pay careful attention to the arrows on the face of the clockspring. Interesting that when Porsche goes "all PDK" used Porsches with a manual transmission might command a premium! I wonder if there is someone out there already planning to "corner the market" for "previously owned manual transmission Porsches"? Regards, Maurice.by MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
I have one in Long Island, New York. You should also do some more research on programming the new immobilizer as I believe that it is a one shot deal. IIRC, if you get it wrong you can't "re-program" it to work. Regards, Maurice.by MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
Mike: Thanks for supplying some of the specifics about your new product. There are lots of us, some with ageing Boxsters, who are looking for a practical, cost-effective preventative measure to this nagging issue of the IMS. One of the problems is that a lot of paranoia has been created by less magnanimous suppliers over the past few years. Even the part where you so generously give me credit for playing with your top! Also, since this is advertised as a "final solution", I too would be interested in hearing about the existence or lack of a written warranty, if any. Regards, Maurice.by MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum

Pedro is correct regarding the probable cause...It looks like the cable leading to the driver's side transmission has either broken or become frayed inside the black vinyl sheath that covers it. From your photos, it looks like yours is a 2003 or 2004 Boxster, unless you have done the OEM glass-windowed top upgrade to an earlier Boxster. As such, you have the B version transmissions, so it's notby MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
Guys: I was searching for a convertible top replacement for my GF's Toyota Celica and ended up searching on the Robbins Tops web site. There is an offer for a free top with installation for anyone who has a 2003 or 2004 Boxster and who lives close enough to Oxnard, CA (60 miles north of L.A.) and who can leave their car there for a few days. So, I thought I would pass it along: Regards, Mauriby MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum

Your best bet is get some thread from a boating store, the type that they use to patch sails. That thread is very strong and UV resistant and less likely to disintegrate from the effects of the sun. Regards, Maurice.by MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum

Quotejwdbox Thanks for the feedback Doug. You mentioned the trunk was smaller- that's surprising. Was that because of the new top arrangement intruding into what was the back of the trunk? Porsche N.A. brought three new Boxsters to BRBS for everyone to check out. The rear trunk is definitely smaller because the bulkhead for the engine seems to have a "bump" that runs from left to right and pby MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
My pleasure entirely, Roger! You must have been a boy scout. You were all prepared and set up to fix the other side before it had a chance to ruin your day! The wider strap should last much longer and keep the cable in the guide channel. Good work! Only six days before we leave for BRBS!~! Regards, Maurice.by MauriceonLongIsland - Main Forum
