Coming into work today I noticed the first of the season Daffodils have finally started to bloom. Should get to 65 today. Then a cold weekend - staying in the 40's.by John B in SC - Main Forum
You can rule out transmission fluid since it stinks. Brake fluid is unlikely as the reservoir is in the front and the lines run around the sides. My guess would be the power steering fluid. There is an overflow tube that hangs off the engine behind the driver side of the car.by John B in SC - Main Forum
Just replaced the manual transmission fluid on my '99 Boxster with 71K. Pretty sure it's the first time it was done. As projects go, this was really easy once I got the right tools. Most of the time when I'm working on the car I think those Germans are rather smart in their design, but every once in awhile I've got to ask myself "What they heck were they thinking?" Like on this project - whatby John B in SC - Main Forum
Hate to think of this as a possibility - but is she possibly putting oil in the coolant reservoir - hence it not showing the oil level going up? The coolant and oil caps are next to each other. I would be surprised if she could get 2 qts of oil added to the coolant tank without it overflowing , so hope this is not the case.by John B in SC - Main Forum
Got my invite also. We'll be doing the morning session on Oct. 31. Hope to meet you in person Jim. Will you be going to Euro Autofestival at the BMW plant this Sat?by John B in SC - Main Forum
I guess I'm out of touch with current new car prices. Most amazing fact in that article to me is that a Chevy Traverse minivan/SUV/crossover carries a sticker of $39,000!!by John B in SC - Main Forum
Just a different spin on the subject - but have you looked at what used Boxster's you can buy for the same $10-12,000? Rather than just an engine with unknown integrity - you may be able to find a lower mileage car with documented service history.. Selling off the parts car lets you jump your target car price to $15,000. There's a lot of nice stuff out there if you go looking in thatby John B in SC - Main Forum
Hey - I was there too!! Dang that's a mean looking black Boxster S you've got there Mark!! I also agree the "void" with the folded top just looks unfinished. I had noticed it on the cars we saw at BRBS and thought it was maybe just an oversight on some pre-production tour cars. Otherwise, fit and finish on the 2 cars at the reveal party looked very good. Loved the Agate color. Lovedby John B in SC - Main Forum
...real pain in the neck. I watched Pedro and Stefan do it to a car at BRBS several years ago. Luckily they were at a gas station and were able to keep refilling jugs of water each time the system "burped". It's not really difficult - just time consuming and messy. My second experience was when traveling with a local group of Porsche's on a tour. We were on the Blue Ridge Parkway andby John B in SC - Main Forum
This is the one I got. UV550000. Very substantial feel with all brass connection. It was only a few dollars more than the plastic one. It was the first time I bought from Tooltopia.com. Very satisfied with price - no shipping or taxes. And tool arrived in 3 days!! I was a bit nervous about how well it would work. So here's the water pump that gave me problems. Sort of interesting. It looks like the shaft wore out (possibly from serpentine belt tension always pulling upwards?). This allowed the impeller to get off center and actually start wearing out the inside. Ultimately started eating away at the edges of the impellers.I'm hopeful that was a slow gradual process generating finely sized particles thby John B in SC - Main Forum
Do you recommend the car be level when using the Air Lift system or should the car be "nose down" ala the burping method ?by John B in SC - Main Forum
But isn't that the purpose of the Airlift system. To pull all those air pockets out? Perhaps I'm just not fully understanding what that system is doing.by John B in SC - Main Forum
My car is a '99 with 68K . So I'm driving down to the new Atlanta Motorsports Park on Sat to observe a Tracks Unlimited event to get a feel for things before our upcoming PCA DE weekend in July. Beautiful day, top down, making good time. Finally get off the main road and as I slow down I get a whiff of that unmistakably sickly sweet smell of antifreeze. Check the gauges. Yeah, that's the sound I heard when lifting the center console lid on the old '99 Boxster. Knew right away I had broken the latch. Ordered the upgraded parts and found a DIY for replacing one on a 996. Quick question for those that have already replaced theirs. Can this repair be done on the Boxster without removing the entire center console? On the 996 it looks like you can get it doby John B in SC - Main Forum
Pedro - How much of the improvement to PSS9's was simply going from your 200K worn out suspension to something newer? ie - how much improvement do you think you would have noticed just by replacing with a new ROW MO3O set-up? I just did the ROW M030 replacement and have been quite pleased with it. I know it's not as good as the PSS9, but it was a compromise between price, and street vby John B in SC - Main Forum
Put some anti seize on the rotor hat and hub center hole as well as the back of the wheels to avoid any minor rusting or corrosion that might be making it "stick" where these surfaces mate up.by John B in SC - Main Forum
Sorry to hear that Pedro. Wishing you a speedy and full recoveryby John B in SC - Main Forum
Got all in there and it was definitely the strut leaking. In fact, the indy tech had made a note on my invoice to watch that strut as he saw a few drops of oil. Apparently, it blew the seal pretty good on the way home. Funny, I was thinking when driving it home that the car felt so much better and less clunky with the new motor mount, but I was noticing just a hint of pull to the right - aby John B in SC - Main Forum
Is there any specific area on the strut I could look where the liquid would normally leak ?by John B in SC - Main Forum
1999 base Boxster. Just getting it ready for the first DE of the season. Had it over to the indy for a tech inspection and had the engine mount replaced as I'm now at 66K and figured it was past due. Anyway - car drove fine the 30 miles home. Took it to work today and put another 40 miles on it. As I'm getting ready to pull in the driveway my wife stops me and says "Can you look at thby John B in SC - Main Forum
This is a nice system because it puts it up out of the way, but it is a bit pricey.by John B in SC - Main Forum
I have a '98 993 as well as my '99 Boxster. You should take a 993 for a test drive. I suspect you'll either quickly mark it off the list or decide it's something you just have to have. It is a completely different experience from the Boxster. Compared to your 2005 it will feel very old, small, cramped, unsophisticated and noisy. Yet it's very nostalgic and classic. It has (to me) the beby John B in SC - Main Forum

I've been meaning to post some pictures from an area charity event held at the BMW manufacturing plant back in Oct. . Lots of great European cars of all ages. I was mostly too busy looking to take many pictures, but here's a few. First in class once again with the 993 C2S.by John B in SC - Main Forum
I know Pedro likes Kumho's for the track. I've been very happy with my Dunlop Star Specs. Very streetable in warm weather but have good stick and responsiveness on the track.by John B in SC - Main Forum
Petit LeMans is running at Road Atlanta this weekend. They started an event last year in downtown Greenville, SC called Motorsports on Main (sponsored by Michelin) that features many teams displaying their cars and occasionally a driver. I didn't get a chance to go but my wife was kind enough to grab a few photos.by John B in SC - Main Forum
