So I'm thinking of having a paint restoration job on my soon to be 18 year old Boxster (1999 Forest Green) and this will likely include removal of the front bumper. Car has about 85K miles. What should I think about having done in the way of maintenance or upgrades when we're in this neck of the woods? The only two tasks that I can think of are ... radiator cleaning and trunk release cable relocby Indybox - Main Forum
Water pump stays put until failure. I put a reminder in my maintenance binder to replace the T-stat when the pump is replaced (or vice versa). Many thanks again for your helpful comments. The amount of what appears to be VarioCam rail wear products is not too great but I might still have the dealer check the cam deviation at some point ... perhaps when it's time for the 90K service.by Indybox - Main Forum
OK ... so here was me thinking that the impeller failures might be age related (impeller material deterioration) but a pump bearing failure leading to impeller rub would make more sense and result in external leakage. Thanks again ... very much appreciated.by Indybox - Main Forum
PS: Not sure if an impeller vane break up would necessarily result in external leakage ... noise perhaps. Don't think there can be much forewarning of local overheating of the engine due to coolant passage blockage by vane fragments. The other aspect of car reliability that concerns me is age related (18 years) as opposed to the relatively low 85K miles. I was pleasantly surprised when we manageby Indybox - Main Forum
Thanks very much for that info. I think the dealer has the front engine cover off at each annual inspection and they haven't reported any signs of weepage at the pump nor wobbly pulleys. I'll try to remember the T-stat when the day comes.by Indybox - Main Forum
So .. my soon to be 18 year old 1999 986 has 85K miles now. At 67K miles in 2010, I replaced the IMS bearing with the dual row LN bearing as well as the AOS, motor mount and clutch. In 2015, I had the coolant replaced thinking this might help the life of the coolant pump but now I'm reconsidering a preventative pump replacement. With and without sunshine snaps of Miami Blue Boxster S ... For comparison ... Riviera, Miami and Mexico blues left to right. Miami is looking good in this snap. On a related note ... if I did a Euro delivery mid to late April 2017 ... what is the likelihood of mountain snow being an issue driving from Stuttgart to Lake Como?by Indybox - Main Forum

Are there any non-Flash based alternatives for posting photos here? Flash seems to be getting a lot of bad press regarding security vulnerabilities.by Indybox - Main Forum
Had a look at a 718 Boxster S in Miami Blue with black top yesterday. When we arrived, it was overcast and the first impression was ... well, that's a little darker (hint of green?) than we were expecting. After a while, the sun popped out and WOW ... the colour was transformed. Very nice colour that has to be seen in the sunshine!by Indybox - Main Forum
Photo taken a couple of weeks ago after an excellent run north of Montreal on the twisty route 327. A photo like this one makes me wonder why I would even consider getting into a new Boxster! Came close to buying the Spyder last year but in the end, I didn't pull the trigger. Still thinking of a new ride where being able to choose my options and having a Euro delivery are priorities. So ... here I am contemplating a new Boxster ... the one with the 3.8 ... and one of my concerns is the distance from home to the dealer ... 500 miles via a major highway. Weather is expected to be dry with average ambient temp in the 40's F. Should I be concerned about driving that distance at the beginning of the break in period? Do you think I can vary the speed and engine revs sufficientlyby Indybox - Main Forum
Murray and Akemi were sitting at our table at the Concours banquet ... small world! Very nice couple. Here's a couple snaps of my '99 at West Baden ... the only forest green Boxster at parade this year. Round trip from Montreal with an excursion to Churchill Downs ... no issues with the car. Luck was on my side this time ... won two door prizes and the odo turned 77777 miles during the trip!by Indybox - Main Forum
Hi Ed, We'll be attending the parade but our car won't be in the Concours. We're signed up for some rallys and tours. Look for the forest green '99 Boxster with a Quebec plate. I've made a note to attend the Boxster register photo shoot on Sunday June 21 ... 5:45 pm at the Pirelli welcome party French Lick hotel (upper and lower gardens). Thanks ... it's a great feeling any way you slice it ... '99 2.5 or 2015 GTS! Back roads or track ... although the track was a fantastic experience ... especially with Sport Plus engaged! Your GT silver 981 is fantastic. Definitely need to add that colour to my short list if I get serious about a new Boxster.by Indybox - Main Forum
Spring at last ... indeed. Couldn't resist this all green photo op last weekend just west of Montreal. I'm still really liking my '99 but Porsche have me thinking about a new ride. Guess I lucked out when the dealer invited me to a track to drive a small fleet of GTS flavoured cars with an instructor ... my first time driving a Porsche at speed on a track. I've had some air cooled flat six dreams over the winter but after yesterday's inaugural Boxster run ... just can't imagine parting with my '99. Born on date is in July '99 so last month of production for this gen 1 car which was new to me at 44K miles after a 4 year lease. Now at 75K miles ... those curves never get old. Finally got the Boxster out of hibernation for an excellent run along the St. Lawrence river just west of Montreal. Fine day. My first engine start after close to 6 months hibernation was pretty rough. Two attempts required to get running but big vibs due not all cylinders firing required a shutdown and third start that resulted in smooth running. Last spring I had a rough start (somethingby Indybox - Main Forum
Tony, Thanks very much for the info ... really appreciate that. Cheers, Johnby Indybox - Main Forum
OK ... thanks. After the sticker shock for purchasing an '88 911 ... would you say that the running costs (maintenance / repair) for a well maintained, two owner 75K mile 1988 911 would be more or less than a '99 Boxster with the same pedigree? I'm also thinking that the likelihood of my '99 Boxster 2.5 L engine going kablaamo is greater than the same catastrophy on a 911 3.2 so that might skewby Indybox - Main Forum
I can't say I was a dyed in the wool car guy although 911 Turbo's and open wheel racing was a big interest growing up in Montreal during the 70's. My birthday always seems to happen around the same time as the Indy 500 so I watched plenty of those. Who knew that 30 years later, I'd be living and working in Indy! During our 11 years there I went to almost all of the 500's and attended all of thby Indybox - Main Forum
Dear Marc, My deepest condolences. I lost my Mom last year and Dad some years ago. Mom's passing has probably been the hardest blow to overcome. I do have some happy memories of when I took Mom for a top down Boxster ride in Indiana when we lived there and my parents came to visit. And another drive more recently here in Montreal after we moved back North of the border ... even though her arby Indybox - Main Forum
Woohoo! Photo post success ... thanks! Photo of our "his" ('99 986) and hers ('03 Miata) ragtops at home in Indianapolis before moving back home North of the border a few years ago. Boxster just had it's 75K mile service before winter hibernation. Counting down to some more great top down motoring in spring of 2015.by Indybox - Main Forum
