2006 Boxster seems to be the year to have .Mine has almost 100k and no major issues, basically same maintenance parts as above (tires, brakes, waterpump, battery)by moresquirt - Main Forum
After looking back over Jake Rabys comments it appears the main diff between the change over from 06 to 07 was that Porsche changed the pistons from cast to forged. Forged are stronger but unfortunately something in the design created borescoring problems. There have been virtually no borescoring issues on 06 and older motors. FYI. Anyone thinking along the same lines with the 06 model year standby moresquirt - Main Forum
I have read a ton of info on all years of the Boxster and it appears that the 06 model year may just be a smart choice possibly over some of the other years. Reasons: Last revision of the IMS bearing (not seeing any issues) Last year of the 3.2L engine which was in production for a long time and was well tuned and the highest HP and Torque for that motor. No Bore scoring issues that I have readby moresquirt - Main Forum
I broke the same hose trying to remove to install a new AOS last fall.Yes I agree replacement hose is not only expensive but a bitch to replace as u mentioned it runs across the whole engine and down into the corner by the power steering somewhere equally difficult to reconnect. I ended up just pushing the existing hose hose back on best I could and holding it in place with some twist ties and itby moresquirt - Main Forum
UPDATE: I installed a new AOS few days ago, went pretty smooth.I decided to cut open the old (Original AOS) and see if any rips or pin holes ect after 80000 miles.(130000 Kilometres ) I did not see any pin holes or rips BUT the Diaphragm was definitely on it last legs.I gently pulled on the rubber to see how much stretch or flex was left and it immediately ripped. The rubber was obviously dry rottby moresquirt - Main Forum
sorry, miss read his info 10 to 12 was the spec of the newer stuff. The older or earlier caymans and Boxster were much higher in pressure as per a post from LN I read today.by moresquirt - Main Forum
UPDATE: I just received an email back from LN regarding this and there definitely is a Bypass in the Canister . It does not move down, it moves up towards the filter or engine under approx 2psi pressure and allows oil (probably dirty oil) sitting in the bottom of the canister to flow up thru the bottom of the element into the motor. To test u can get a hooked screwdriver or a pair of pliers andby moresquirt - Main Forum
Mike that looks ver similar to inside of mine but Dealer is telling me that the raised section with the round metal rivet in middle is just a molded receiving section for filter element to sit into.I tried to press hard on that section and none off it would budge.I thought it would be spring loaded unless mine is seized or jammed.Only way I can confirm I guess is to cut it open.I just dont wantby moresquirt - Main Forum
I decided to call Porsch an ask. They tell me that there is NO BYPASS built into the Canister so I'm not sure what LN is referring to.I really wish it was easier to get a strait answer on this.Maybe some years did and some did not.I wonder if Pedro could chime in and help confirm!by moresquirt - Main Forum
Forgot to add, have you noticed any difference in oil filters, aftermarket (Wix,ect) compared to the stock Porsche unit in Microns. I have been using the Carquest units and they look vert similar but I notice that they start to cave in or distort pleats if left on for say 10000 kilometres (7000 miles) or is that more to do with the design.by moresquirt - Main Forum
Great info.Thx.Just got done installing my new AOS,went pretty smoothly but if I had to do it again it would go a lot quicker. I think I personally have done more work on this car than any car I have ever owned.Im not sure if its because I don't want to pay the crazy Porsche hourly rates and that the nearest dealer or Porsche Indy shop it almost 1.5 hrs away but its definitely self rewarding wheby moresquirt - Main Forum
I am changing my oil and noticed a plastic section with a round metal piece in the middle at the inside bottom of the Black filter canister. It that just to support the filter or is there some kind of bypass built into the housing. If so how to u test it? Thxby moresquirt - Main Forum
Ok u got my attention! I ordered one for replacement.Thx for all the info.by moresquirt - Main Forum
Thx for reply MarcW. I only put approx 6-7k on a year so thats a lot of possible years left if I am fortunate enough. I have seen posts on some making a squealing noise and others with just Hugh amounts of smoke out the tail pipe that won't quit. If and when mine decides to blow or if the diaphragm gets a small tear is the smoke white or blue . Thxby moresquirt - Main Forum
I am up in Canada, car still in storage but coming out soon hopefully! As above I now have 130000 kilometres and was wondering if its worth being proactive in changing out the air oil separator .I have not had any indication to any problems, just occasional white smoke out the tail pipe for couple minutes on cold start up or if I am parked on an incline. No difficulty removing the oil cap ect.Thisby moresquirt - Main Forum
ok Thx for feedbackby moresquirt - Main Forum
Late last fall just before storing my 06 Boxster S I started the car and backed out of garage to clean car but never got to it for a few hrs.Everything sounds fine when I started the car. When I went out to wash the car I started it up to raise the roof and the engine started an extremely loud knocking like a bad rod, freaked me out.I had read previously that if u get a collapsed lifter it couldby moresquirt - Main Forum
Honestly,i have 2 battery Tenders and dont use either one.I find they all just boil the batterys.I find that batteries like to work and letting them drain off and then be charged up is the beat way for long life.I charge my battery at the end off the season prior to storage then disconnect the Negative battery terminal only and leave it that way until the spring and then put the battery on a charby moresquirt - Main Forum
Need a new starter for my 06 Boxster S. Want to try a lower cost after market unit. Can anyone advise whats decent quality and will not have fitment issues.Thxby moresquirt - Main Forum
Interesting info Marc.I dont go to dealers but if u do and can discuss with a Tech that would be great.I tried calling a Porsch dealer but got no were. They just say bring it in if u suspect a problem. They won,t let u talk to a Tech.by moresquirt - Main Forum
UPDATE: I ended up taking the car in.They were able to get the fans to run on high and low. They hooked up the DME to a computer.Everything appears to work correctly BUT the strange thing is the low speed fans will still not operate if car is cold and i start it up and turn on the A/C .Nothing happens until the temp is high enough then the low speed will operate. It did it before last season everyby moresquirt - Main Forum
Hi Marc, thx for feed back. What i have learned so far.The 987 is a totally different animal than the 986.Those Relays have nothing to do with the fans. The 987 has a Controller attached near the fan on the passenger side.Basically a mini computer. It has the Relays built into it.Its not a Ballast Resistor like the 986.Its approx $300 cdn for the controller. No one sells a after market unit. What i haby moresquirt - Main Forum
I guess i am not totally sure its the ballasts.I did check all the fuses and there all good BUT if i hold my fingers on all the Relays and turn the air conditioner on and off i do not feel or hear any click.I pulled 2 Relays and reversed them but no change,Mine on my 987.1 are different than the 986 layout. Is it possible its the Relays.I need to figure out what ones are low and what 2 are high spby moresquirt - Main Forum
Thx for the feedback Marc.Pedro .could u chime in here with your thoughts.I called a local Porsche shop (not dealer) .They advised me that it may only be a problem if i get into heavy traffic when its really hot out but here in the country were i live and spend most off my time in the car it would be rare to be in heavy traffic.Take that for what its worth..I am still trying to find an after markby moresquirt - Main Forum
From what i have researched regarding the front fans. The low speed comes on at 206 degrees and the high speed comes on at 216 degrees. Both my high speeds work but both low speed do not.Fuses are good.Would it be ok to just run the car with high speed working only. For 10 degrees is seems like its really not necessary. Porsche wants close to $300 cdn per Controller or Ballast resistor. Is there a dby moresquirt - Main Forum
Amazing Guys! So much for IMS issues! Just took my 06 out for its spring run and got that warm fuzzy feeling all over again.Only 120,000 Kilometers so its really new compared to above posts.Nice to Know that my ride could potentially hit 300000 miles one day!!by moresquirt - Main Forum
ok Thx Marc.by moresquirt - Main Forum
Yes i just did the rad clean outs but did not disconnect any wires other than the fog light large plug, there is a sensor off sort that was attached near the centre off the bumper i noticed when i pulled the front bumper.I dont think it got damaged but i guess theres a possibility.Do u know what that sensor is for. I think that the relay could be the culprit, can u tell me were that is located.I fiby moresquirt - Main Forum
I just checked my front rad fans after reading some info on boxster issues.I read that the fans have a low and high speed setting.I started the car and turned on the air but both fans do not turn on.Is there a delay before they will run on slow speed.I waited a few minutes.I do remember cheaking them end off last season and both were working befor storing car for winter. Also wondering if u canby moresquirt - Main Forum
Decided to start today by myself and got everything off and rads cleaned, just used compressed air and it removed everything. They did need done but not terrible as ive seen on some 986 Youtube videos.I should be able to go another 10 years i think.I did have a few issues though. When i was pulling the rad off i dident realize that theres a little tab on the plastic ears that hold the rad in place aby moresquirt - Main Forum
