Agree with the posts about the top and trunk drains.... it was the under seat box that flooded, but the tech thinks the popped trunks and down windows were a result of the failure not the cause of it. Speculation is a window was cracked enough to allow water in that caused the failure. Regardless, $2000+ to get going. My 09 Boxster had to take the flatbed of shame from the Marriott parking lot in Tyson’s Corner to the dealer a fee blocks away Thursday. I’m not fully sure what happened... came back from work, locked the car, went back to lift the handle and make sure it was locked, and left. Next morning, I came out to find the rear trunk ajar and both windows down 1/4 way. It rained all night. Car batterby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
Thanks to all of you who went by and looked at this. all of you noted the paint chips and the odd clanking sound on start-up. That, plus the 60k+ miles worried me. I looked at it last weekend....not a normal sound on cold start. Wound up buying a 2009 base. I mean base...no wind screen, loop inserts and that terrible base sound system. But I can fix all of that... What a great community when 5 bby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
I'm about to sell my 3rd and current 2000 Boxster in Honolulu prior to moving back to the east coast. It just isn't worth the cost to ship a 16 year old car back... I wish to replace it with a 2008 or later model. I've located a 2010 with 64k miles, Tip and the nav / bluetooth package in the color I want for $29k. The dealer selling it has sent me the pre-buy inspection done by the local Porscheby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
as you suggested, from a local shop that replaced them with better ones.by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
Has anyone tried to replace one of the four 6 ohm 3.5" speakers used in the 986 rear deck speaker kits? One of my 4 experienced trauma, and I can find no sources for one anywhere. 4 ohm speakers abound, but not 6.by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
Yes - you gut it. I'm a critical care doc, so access to a good 20 gauge needle and syringe was easy. Almost too small to force really viscous lithium through, but not quite. I agree with grant that moly would be better (I think I used that on the rear a few years ago). The unlubricated creaking (dry socket) can't be good. But this isn't a bandaid - it should keep the wear at bay. My back is stiby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
And THEN...I see this thread. I had a similar rear creak about 8 years ago. I put some ?moly? Lithium? (Don't remember) in the control arm ball joint and, well, its been 8 years. Recently the front passenger side has developed the same creak, so today I did exactly what I did then (and what is suggested above) - injected some lithium grease into the ball joint. The central locking unit has a fuse. It is blown. Bet you money.by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
I no longer live in DC having moved to the Seattle area last summer. Taylor took care of my 2000 Boxster for the duration of my time there. I couldn't recommend him more highly. In addition to being good at what he does, he genuinely loves the cars and is great to work with. I didn't go for the updated IMB kit last summer when I had a tip rebuild; not because I didn't want to or think I should,by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
Nothing more than a dead starter. Easy fix, and no more worry than a rental car for the 3 days it takes to get one up here. But... Air / oil seperator also clearly bad. Last replaced at 60k, so this will add $$ but not time to the down period. Bad news is never a single hit.by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
The "break free" was the sound / feel of what happened as the starter was trying to turn the flywheel and start the car; there was a "give" and then the starter just spun freely without engaging anything further. I've sure replaced the starter a few times on my old 914s and 911s, but non for many years now. I'm currently about 1000 miles from home 9and tools and shop) so at the mercy of local shby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
my 2000 with 110K has been mechanic free for 11 months....until today. Tried to start it. Starter engaged engine and turned it over then prior to it starting, something seemed to "break free." Starter still spins madly but doesn't seem to be engaging the flywheel. It is a tip, so attempting to turn the flywheel isn't straight forward. Any thoughts??by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
After a month, car is back. Rebuilt tip locally. 5K for the tip rebuild and an upgrade of the IMS + the RMS seal as well as an engine oil change. Much quieter - apparently new bearings are worth something. Lot of $$, but at least running well. If i wasn't flat out of $$ i would have thrown some new tranny mounts at it while apart.by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
Where to start.... I'm the 2nd and 4th owner of this car. Odd story. On repurchasing it, I did the tip fluid and filter (then at about 80k). Did it again at 100K (just prior to the failure and, to be honest, because of some slipping symptoms). I live in Virginia Beach but work M-F in Washington, DC (which is where the car is now). Taylor at German Auto does the work on the car (terrifically, Iby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
My 2000 Tiptronic (106k miles) has had tranny failure. Kinda saw this coming....slight erratic shifting and undulations at steady speed for a while. Improved with fluid and filter change and then....badness. A whine followed by inability to shift into gear followed by CEL city. The car is largely restored and updated. I have followed this forum and its predecessor for 10 years and have never seen Bilstein conforts mentioned until today. Sounds good - stock height, some measure of comfort for daily driver and made by the OEM for the car. I've seen the complete kits mentioned above too and been tempted. But they seem aimed at the "upgrade" market - meanng to a more track worthy less comfortable car. As Grandby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
The last step in the restoration of my 2000 base tip is replacement of the suspension. Archives suggest that most like the Bilstein HD as near matches for the OEMs. I drive in the pothole city and twice a week on the I95 corridor. No track or other high demand driving. I value comfort given the stock performance I bought the car for. The archives suggest that the bilsteins are intended for sprinby Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
My 2000 Boxster with savannah beige seats has a rip in the seat side panel. The local leather and upholstery shop used by the local dealer tells me that his source for Porsche leather no longer carries that color. Does anyone know of a source I could tap into?by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
I abandoned them a year or so ago in favor of German Automotive. Taylor Chapman is excellent, his service tailored and personal and nothing ever gets dropped.by Chris in Va Beach - Main Forum
