Information on installing a wired back up camera I know you asked about a wireless back up camera, but if you decide you to go with a wired unit and a double DIN head unit there is some helpful info on the 986 forum. Even if you decide to stick with your wireless plan you may find some of the information such as how to find the back up signal wire helpful. Good luck with your project.by KevinH2000 - Main Forum
I retrofitted memory seats in my 2000 Boxster and was considering adding the memory and reverse functions to the mirrors. Even on a relatively non-complex 2000 986 that won't be a simple task. The mirrors have two control circuits - one that runs from the manual controls and another that runs from the memory module under the driver's seat. The memory mirrors have 12 pins instead of the 6 thatby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
Information on replacing LCDs The replacement parts are available. The repair appears to require some skill, but you may be able to find a local person with the tools and expertise.by KevinH2000 - Main Forum
I owned two Miatas (a 90 "B" package and a 94 M Edition) before I bought my Boxster. I think that there are many Boxster owners that followed that path, so I think there are more than a few folks that are checking out the reviews. In Dan Neil's review in the WSJ he mentioned that a few wags are already calling the 124 the "Fiata."by KevinH2000 - Main Forum
It appears that Grant and the folks on the Pelican website were able to get everything working except the seat heaters. So, if you want to have operational seat heaters, you will need to innovate. I was able to figure out some of the intricacies of the 986/996 seats, but I think that was a much less complex task than the one you face. There was a substantial amount of information already availaby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
If you do this, please post about your experience. I had considered doing the same modification, but decided to go in another direction. I started with basic powered backrest/unheated seats in my 2000 Boxster and upgraded to heated, full-power memory seats. You can read about it here: Seat Upgrade When I have some time, I may install the memory mirror function, but that may be a project for nexby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
997 Seats in a Boxsterby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
They are not. Here's an article that describes how to modify them to make them work: The author used seats from a 997, but I expect the Cayman seats to be similar.by KevinH2000 - Main Forum
It's been several years since my cluster project. At the time it seemed that the unavailability of parts to repair the 986/996 clusters was limiting the work that the gauge shops could do. I saw recently that replacement LCD's for the early displays are now available, so that may be changing. In the past, the only remedy for a bad lcd was a new cluster. Here's a link to information on reprogramming a gauge cluster: Cluster Programming You can download a pdf with instructions here: Cluster Programming DIY I did this as part of the process of installing a 996 cluster in my 2000 Boxster. If I recall correctly, the cluster in the 2002 Boxster is the newer-style dot-matrix display. I have not actually done the work on a dot matrix cluster. The cby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
Before you make a decision see if you can find a set of used litronic headlights. Litronics use HID xenon gas technology. The appearance and function are superior to the stock halogen headlights. Here's a post I put on another board describing how I refurbished a set for my car: Refurbishing used litronic headlights If you want to really get to know your car, you can also retrofit the self-leby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
It looks like replacement LCDs are now available: LCD's availablel If you can find someone with the skill to install them it may save your cluster.by KevinH2000 - Main Forum
Here's a link to instructions from re-programming a 986 or 996 cluster: Cluster Programming The mileage is encrypted, but you can copy it from one cluster to another. The best explanation I have heard for the lcd problem is that something (dust or a water molecule) got between two layers of the lcd laminates during the manufacturing process. The layers eventually de-laminate causing the prby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
The first car I bought was a 1980 Toyota Tercel. One night I went out for a few drinks with a couple of co-workers. One of the other guys had a 924 and we took that out. (I ended up in the back "seat" since I was the smallest.) I don't drink much and I ended up being the designated driver for the trip back. Driving the 924 back-to-back with my Tercel was quite a contrast. I understand the cby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
I upgraded my two-way power seats to 8-way power seats by swapping in the bases from an 8-way power seat. Now I have two manual bases that I don't need. I believe they can be modified and used to mount racing seats. I'd like to net $75 from selling both bases. They are heavy and shipping will be about $50 for both of them. Send me a PM if you are interested. You can find more details here:by KevinH2000 - Parts for Sale
My daughter drives a 2006 Civic that I bought used with 30,000 miles on it - roughly the same mileage that my Boxster had on it when I bought it. Your post caused me to look at my maintenance log and the differences in both frequence and cost of repairs is striking. Also, I have given into the temptation of upgrading my Boxster (litronic headlights, heated seats, Carrera gauge cluster, double dby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
This is a connector for the motors in an 8-way power seat in a 986 or 996. I need the connector plus a few inches of wire to solder to. I would like to buy two if you have them. The plug goes into this control module that fits under the seat: Please contact me with price and availability. Thanksby KevinH2000 - Parts for Sale
QuoteCrooster Jeez, that seems like a crazy amount of money. Do you know the parts / labor breakdown? Here's a DIY for removing and replacing the alternator: There seems to be one tricky part, but it does not seem like it should be more than a couple of hours of labor. Rebuilt alternators shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars.by KevinH2000 - Main Forum
Here's a 996 cluster for sale at a good price. Carrera Cluster I think a 2002 Boxster uses this "new style" cluster with the dot matrix read outs, but please verify with the information from the articles. Too bad the lenses are scratched, but you may be able to use the lenses from your Boxster cluster to replace the 3 center gauges on a 996 cluster. The Pelican site has complete instructionsby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
It sounds like a frustrating situation, especially since you have invested so much time and money without results. You can actually program a cluster from another car with the information from your cluster. You can read about the process here: Boxster Cluster Programming and find a link to the instructions here: Coding Instructions (You will need to be a Renntech member to access this.) This is a fairly common problem in the lcd displays that were used in 1997-2000 cars. The best explanation I've heard is that an impurity found its way between the layers during the manufacturing process and that over time it causes the layers to delaminate. I think this was so common that it led to the led to Porsche introducing the dot matrix display clusters in the 2001 and later models. Whby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
Sorry to dredge up a thread from 7 months ago, but I had a question about the TechnoLite_HD product and this looked like a good thread to use as a starting point. I recently bought a set of used OEM litronic headlights which I was able to refurbish and install on my car. Because they were out of a wreck, I didn't receive a controller or wiring harness with them that would permit the xenon bulbsby KevinH2000 - Main Forum
