Here's my new car. It's a triple black 2017 718 Boxster S. In the picture it is wearing its 18 inch winter shoes. ;-)by jeff in VA - Main Forum
Lol -- I admit I have been distracted with things. I will get some pics for you as soon as I can -- I am sorry for the delay. As for the new car -- I think its great. It has been an adjustment though. I drove my 986 for many years, and I loved that car. I would not have given it up for anything. Unfortunately, it died and I had to get something to get around in. The 718 is the closest I coby jeff in VA - Main Forum
The available tire sizes on the 718 Boxster S when you buy it new are 19" and 20", but Porsche sells a winter tire / wheel set for the 718 with 18" wheels. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different wheel sizes? I imagine the 18" wheels will be less prone to damage in pot-holes and such, but is there any issue with clearance around the brakes and such? I suppose not, given itby jeff in VA - Main Forum
So, dumb question: if you swap a set of summer tires / wheels with a set of winter tires / wheels, how does that affect the TPMS? What do you have to do to make sure it works with the new set of tires / wheels? I'm thinking about having some winter tires sent to my house for my new 718 (there -- I revealed my purchase of one of the growly cars despite the likely scoffs from the audience ;-). Mike, I did get your messages and tried to respond with my thanks. I think I am the one who cant work the pm thing, not you! Thank you (and everyone else who responded) again for your advice and help. ;-)by jeff in VA - Main Forum
So, I went in and talked to the service rep and the technicians that worked on the car. I'm not very knowledgeable about these things, but they were friendly, accommodating, and seemed to say all the right things. They started by saying that this is normally an issue with the sensors, just like you guys here said. But, the sensors seem to be ok, and the right bank had some sort of compressionby jeff in VA - Main Forum
Well, I appreciate your advice. I am pretty clueless about this stuff myself. I didn't really understand Marc's earlier post with the details of the error, for example. Anyway, I will be talking to them again tomorrow.by jeff in VA - Main Forum
So, I just talked to the dealer. He sent me a schematic of the chain gear that shows the different drive wheels, chains and valves and pointed out where the chains have timing marks. He said the technician has verified visually by observing the marks as the chains move that the timing is off, so it is definitely not a problem with the sensors. He said sometimes the oil pump, which is driven byby jeff in VA - Main Forum
I am also very grateful to everyone that has responded or sent a PM. Thank you. I asked the dealer to tell me specifically what they've checked so far, and suggested they check the sensors. I have not heard back from them yet. The last I heard from the rep yesterday was: "my technician is in the middle of removing the oil pump to see from there how the timing jumped he's going to let me knowby jeff in VA - Main Forum

Thanks Marc, I really appreciate your advice. I'll ask the dealer for the codes and post them tomorrow.by jeff in VA - Main Forum
I have a 2002 Boxster S with ~160k miles that has been my daily driver for more than 12 years. The other day I had a flashing CEL and my engine shut down. Towed it to the dealer. They checked the "easy" things but couldn't diagnose a problem. Now they say it will take at least another $1300 to pull it apart and check the camshaft and such (8+ hours of labor, they said). They suggested thatby jeff in VA - Main Forum
This reminds me of the fable of my great grandfather's axe. It's been in the family for many many years. Over those years, the handle has been replaced a half dozen times. And the head has also been replaced a half dozen times. ;-)by jeff in VA - Main Forum
I need to carry my bicycle to a distant location. Any recommendations for a bike rack for my '02?by jeff in VA - Main Forum

I run Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires on my '02 S, which is my daily driver, and I think they are great. I had summer tires on it when I first got the car, and those tires were a bit sketchy down around 40 degrees and lower. I live in the DC area, and 40 degrees or lower happens a lot during the year. So, I'm more comfortable with the A/S. I once tried the Kuhmo A/S tires to try to save some mby jeff in VA - Main Forum
Well, upon closer inspection, it looks like one of my windstop mounts that the "clips" grab onto is broken. I guess I will have to try the repair route. Thanks for the info guys. On the other hand, today it wasn't actually that bad top-down without the windstop. ;-)by jeff in VA - Main Forum
Anybody have any tricks to stop the rattles and such that come from the windsreen and inserts in my rollbar?by jeff in VA - Main Forum
I posted a similar question a little while back, and after seeing your question here, I thought I would follow up with has been happening with my car. I also had a CEL come on with a P0430 error code. I took it to the dealer, and he said I should replace both cats to a tune of > $3k. I decided I needed a second opinon. I then took it to an independent who noticed an oil leak in the spark pby jeff in VA - Main Forum

Its getting into winter and my wipers are shot. I'm going to run over the auto store and get some replacements. Any advice before I go?by jeff in VA - Main Forum
Marc, your advice is actually pretty consistent with what the Curry's tech told me. He also suggested running a bottle of Techron through the system along with a couple of tanks of Shell gas to try to clean up stuff as best as possible before doing anything dramatic. And, because of issues around the spark plug tubes, he suggested changing the spark plugs too. Looking at my service intervals,by jeff in VA - Main Forum

Thanks for the recommendation. I have heard good things about IMA Motorsports. I will try them next, if it doesn't work out at Curry's.by jeff in VA - Main Forum
Ok, so here's the scoop. The problem code was P0430. The dealer said this meant that I would need to replace both cats and, if that didn't solve the issue, the O2 sensor(s). I took the car to Currys, a local independent. They listened to my story and then spent some time with the car. Based on the fact that the fault code has only been triggered once in the life of the car, and that it has nby jeff in VA - Main Forum
