My problem with the Craftsman tool is, you risk spreading the top of the stud or the hex end when you want to re-set the torque. The Napa tool does not work effectively because it is not designed to work on the euro-cars like the versions from Kukko and Matra. I like Napa, but the quality on that tool is suspect, ie metal too soft and design is off. There is a reason why it costs way less thenby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Along with some of what the others had said, I'd also suggest checking the tie rod assemblies. TRW makes decent outer ends, but their inners, leave something to be desired. I'm about to replace the assemblies on our 986 which has about 60k (round town miles, no aggressive driving) and the inner ends are completely shot. Just a thought. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
If I were upgrading the pan (baffled, etc), then I would think about it(dropping the sump/pan). The majority of any debris will make it's way to the filter pretty fast. I check ours annually, and have yet to find anything. We're at 61k on an 01 base, which I'll probably upgrade the chain tensioner's in the next year or two. For sealant, I'd go with what the factory recommends for the applicatiby por911(bc) - Main Forum
We bought one many years ago(almost 10) off someone who was separating it from a MY00 986. I believe we paid $1500, but it was perfect, same color, and was never used or in sunlight(hung on wall of garage since new). It's well worth the investment, the hardtop has kept the original top on our 986 in almost perfect shape(sound: knocks on wood). There don't seem to be as many 986 hardtops as 996by por911(bc) - Main Forum
Here is a pic of the factory fill..... regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Here is a pic of the security hex bit. That one is a factory Audi tool made by Geba. Here are some of my thoughts on the process: 1)use factory gear box fluid/oil, have 3 bottles handy. 2) make sure the car is level when jacked up. 3) don't over fill the gearbox, I believe it should be 11mm under the over fill for that gear box. You might consider flushing the clutch fluid while in there.by por911(bc) - Main Forum
Yes, a second change out of the fluid will probably help. The tip gearbox's, like many euro/zf auto trans units like really clean fluid to operate smoothly. You might consider changing out the fuel filter, if it has not been done in a while. One element that really smoothed our 01 base out , was replacing the trans mounts. They were collapsed after 45k. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
If we did not have a drive that was so steep that the nose rubs at, or with the standard suspension, I would have put the ROW M030 on years ago. It's a bargain for what you get and the car handles better. The M030 plug and play, other then an alignment. Slightly jealous of those who can get away with it. ; ) regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Doing an R&R of the top assembly is pretty much a plug and play type of job with the 00-04. Just scribe the positions of the top trans when, or during the procedure, it should not be a problem. I like the old style tops, but DIYing a factory replacement skin is not a task for everyone. You might check the ZF North American or USA site, I believe they have rebuild sites down your way. The ofby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Your close to a lot of really good Porsche auto yards, you might consider just putting in a low mile used trans and a donor top/assembly from a 03/04 car(IE glass window if preferred). If it is sold "as is", the car is a bit of a give away(IE 3k or less). Having said that, even sourcing a re-man trans through a discounting dealer, or ZF source, and top should not be too much. Considering whatby por911(bc) - Main Forum
If you are still on the originals, you might consider replacing the trans mounts while in there. I found ours were shot at 50k with very little if any aggressive driving. The usual's should be checked: AOS(because ease of access), RMS, intermediate shaft/seals/bolts, case through bolts, duel mass flywheel, slave, clutch assembly, pilot bearing. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
If you don't have a bra or stone guard for the bumper and mirrors, you might consider one. Check the whole cooling system on the car. Our 01 base has needed a number of the cooling system components gone through(ie cooling tank, w-pump, rollers, etc) around that mileage. We found a V1, CB, garmin, and liquids(water, oil, small p/s fluid, etc.) quite valuable. It's nice to have the top down, buby por911(bc) - Main Forum
You might check the mounts(trans & motor) on the car. I found many of the rattles or noises we had on ours went away when I replaced the afore mentioned parts. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
There is a pipe for the shut off valve in there which Porsche has had issues with on these cars. It might have come loose, or kinked. You might have to pull the wheel well out to have a look. I believe there have been a number of posts here where people had posted the pics of the system from the tsb issued years ago, which shows the afore mentioned pipe/hose. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
No, there is an internal filter in the injector itself. Even the smallest amount of debris will foul the pattern. This is why I change out our fuel filter every 20-30k. By the look of the debris in the old filters, one might think petrol stations pump dirt along with petrol in your tank(ie don't ever change pump/tank filters). You should be able to find a shop who can properly clean them out(neby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I spotted the bypass pipes from a local shop that wanted to get rid of inventory and posted it on CL. Yep, it's usually the header or primary pipe that cracks. If your going to price OEM, you might give some calls into discounting dealers(Sunset, Suncoast, etc....). You might also check CL, as there are a number of cars where people have replaced the whole system with aftermarket and are selliby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I know a number of people running those tires on their BMW's with similar results. Spinning out in the rain was one of the big complaints. It's why I went with the Kuhmo LX Plats for our city beater(318ia), but the tires are not as performance oriented as I would like. Definitely a decent tire for the $ though, especially if your running a separate set of winters. If you want all seasons, youby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I upgraded the coolant cap awhile back, which was needed. Congrats Marc on those miles(255k)!!!!!! Was reading the other post, you definitely got your $ worth out of that old set. How is the car driving now? The 01 base in the pics, drives better now(60k), then when it was new. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum

You might find a low mile set at an auto yard and replace the motor and trans mounts. The drive line is moving around too much which is why the exhaust cracks. This was a problem with the 944/968 series as well when people let the mounts go too long. I've found over the years, there are few who can really get the welds correct on that type of exhaust. It's easier finding a non-cracked set. Theby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Decided to tackle this task the other day since the part had been sitting on the shelf for over a year. Here are some pics of the carnage: The old tank was looking pretty tired and had a fair bit of calcification inside which was surprising since the car has had coolant changes over the years. The liner in the trunk needed to be removed to gain access at the tanks hardware> I foundby por911(bc) - Main Forum
It does not take much, debris wise to foul an injector(had this issue with an Audi awhile back). New factory seals will also probably make a huge difference. It made a noticeable difference on our 01(base). You might consider having them cleaned and matched. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Well, I'll test this out when we go to Maui. I don't remember being asked for it(zip code) the last time we went, but maybe they are used to visitors there and it is just standard practice. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
In WA, we're never asked for a zip code when purchasing petrol. That would really make the lines at the Costco and Fred Meyer(grocery/gas, etc..) a nightmare. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Agreed, it is amazing what a bit of service/maintenance does for these cars. I was stunned what a set of Contis DWS and a proper alignment did for the car(MY01 base). The car drives better now, then when it was new. Porsche's improvements, or upgrades on some of the parts has made a big difference. The 997 shifter, motor and trans mounts made a huge improvement to the car. It was a bit of woby por911(bc) - Main Forum
You might check the trans and motor mount. I put in a 997 shifter housing that really improved things. Having said that, if your interested in rebuilding the gearbox, the factory manual set for the 986 and 996 covers that gearbox pretty well. The press tools are available through outlets like www.samstagsales.com. These gearboxes are more in relation to VW/Audi AG products, which is maybe not aby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Our 01 base has the headliner, but it does not reduce much noise. The factory hardtop on the other hand, does make the car feel(and sound) like a different car(ie coupe). If you want a convertible, but want a coupe-like noise level for the rest of the year you don't have the top down, you might consider getting a hardtop for the car. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
One side of the fuel rails is a pain to DIY, but do-able(you might do those on a separate day). It takes a bit, due to the fact you need to pull the rear access panel as well as the top engine panel(ie service position). There is a bit of plumbing that needs to be pulled out of the way for access. It is amazing though, the difference $70 worth of seals/clips makes. If you have not done the following in it's 56k history, you might consider the following: -change out the AOS(new style) -replace upper and lower injector o-rings -clean out throttle body -replace fuel filter If you want a hand, and your around Bellingham sometime, drop me an email. They are not too bad to do, except the one side of the injector o-rings which is slightly tight. This really heby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Agreed, I was very hesitant going with them. The family has a new Subaru Outback with Conti's on it which are absolute junk(need higher speed rated all-season). Having said that, we were pleasantly surprised with the DWS. When you consider all-season's for this type of car, there are not many choices. We probably would have gone for Brigdestone RE960a/s's(had them on our A4) if there was the opby por911(bc) - Main Forum
