Happy New year to you all. Hope you and your loved ones had a great slide into the new year as the Germans would say. Just got my 986 back from the shop. Irrational Exuberance is now almost old enough to vote... last year she got some past cosmetic damage repaired (a repair to a badly done repair at the Porsche dealer 17 years ago), this Christmas break I finally decided to upgrade the stereo: Tby Constantin - Main Forum
QuoteSRG...no one was using a wind tunnel (for cars like these) in the early 50's. There is the Lotus 11 which is much more streamlined, but I think it was done mostly by intuition/guesswork. The cars that brought us the current standing world record re: speeds on a public road set these records before the second world war and aerodynamics were very much a consideration in the process. That's the issue - size. The Miatas are beautiful roadsters, unassuming, and perfect for newlyweds (i.e. pack some contraceptives and some bubbly, because nothing else will fit in the trunk). Unfortunately, I couldn't fit in one without hitting my legs, knees, etc. all over the place. Like the RX7, I couldn't take the foot off the gas without hitting the steering column en route to the brake pedby Constantin - Main Forum
Quotedb997S As with people and dating, looks aren't everything, it's what's on the inside that counts. Hmmm… on that basis, I'd source a car from anyone but a British manufacturer. Go enjoy the fruits of Mr. Lucas (aka the Prince of Darkness) but don't say I didn't warn you! :-D Every 5 years someone tries to convince me that Jags are the bees knees and that Ford or whoever is silly enough toby Constantin - Main Forum
QuoteMarcWOne has to be very careful then when changing the filter to ensure none of that stuff falls into the air box. That's what the dust buster is for… vacuum first, with the wand extended then move filter.by Constantin - Main Forum
That's the way to go. The Porsche stuff is cheap paper cones, nothing special other than a 'bose' name on it. Nice cones are available, but you get to enjoy putting them in… This summer, I plan on a double-din replacement for the Becker CR22. Can't wait...by Constantin - Main Forum
I can see how the Fiat may be a good choice in FL, AZ, or CA. But up here in the NE, a car like that simply won't last more than a few winters before everything rusts through. OK, so now it's no longer the floor pan… but the Italian attention to detail re: road salt mitigation has gotten a fat F- in my book for many years. For me, the biggest issue is that as pretty as the Fiat is, for that kiby Constantin - Main Forum
QuoteMikenOH I think this product has evolved over the years--IIRC, they originally came in either black or "chrome" and the idea was to dress up the lug nut head a bit after the paint wore off. Agreed--the Porsche crests on them takes this to a new level . I scanned the archives over at 986Board to see if anyone there had any experiences with the Porsche security lug bolts. QuoteGuenter in Ontario Cool. Even nice to see a Porsche tractor still on the road. I spotted that too. Though I noted that they removed the Porsche badge from the flank, presumably to not give away the game right away. Audi is going to be a tough one to beat. Maybe not as many historical trophies at Le Mans, but way more recent experience fielding a team. Plus, awesome Diesel technology that giby Constantin - Main Forum
QuoteMarcW as someone else suggested. While the situations you mentioned in a later post may not seem worthy of revenge by the other parties involved of the sort that involves removing lug bolts, I'd not dismiss that as an explanation. And they could try something else. Also, you might want to consider buying several security bolts for each wheel, and use these for a time, just so you have morby Constantin - Main Forum
The McCard master key set for all Audi security keys is currently sold for $205 on Amazon to anyone. It appears that McCard may in fact have about 20 different patterns, not a single one as I suggested above. That said, I'm not sure if I shouldn't return the McCard set before I put it on the Audi wagon. Seems to me that their 'security' is merely feel-good. Oh my goodness, that is a lot of crests in a very small area! Should I add some fuzzy dice or a nekkid lady decal to my mud flaps? But seriously, thank you for thinking of this. It may be a good option for the summer rims, since the bolts are set even deeper into the rims than on the winter rims. A better option may be physical inspection as you and others have suggested: After all, on the ofby Constantin - Main Forum
At 95lbft of torque, those bolts do not go on easy or come off easy. I have never lost a bolt before, and I've been changing the tires from summer to winter every year since 2002. My wife hasn't lost any bolts either and I've been swapping her tires since about 2004. Her BMW may 'only' require 85lbft of torque but its enough to keep them on. This brings up a good question though, which is what sby Constantin - Main Forum
Good suggestion, and something I hadn't ever had to do re: the bolts. I've visually looked at the profiles of the tires, but I never considered that someone might walk off with the bolts themselves. On a 16" Boxster rim anno 1998, those bolts are fairly visible, as long as you make a point of looking for them (otherwise they just blend into the bolt well, it's all black on black). But on stock 20by Constantin - Main Forum
Front driver side bolts were all loose also, though still in. The only bolt that required heft was the security bolt. So the good news appears to be that someone incompetent tried to steal my tires instead of anything more nefarious. Time to buy bolts for the other car, I guess.by Constantin - Main Forum
So I'm trying to figure out who it could be if creating an accident was the intent. I'm thankfully not part of the witness protection program, nor do I work for an industry/company that generates a great deal of controversy. There are only two lucky contestants I can think of. Contestant #1 is the hotheaded gardener for hire next door that had a major outburst (threatening me with bodily harm)by Constantin - Main Forum
That is precisely what I am hoping… some addict trying to make some bucks but lacking the knowledge to remove the security lug nut. What makes me wonder though is that the bolts were taken… not left. They have little to no value to anyone - used 13 yo bolts that presumably fit a narrow range of cars can't be that attractive a theft target. I suppose I may have overlooked them in the road buby Constantin - Main Forum
So today I meant to change out the winter tires for the summers. Lugged four sets of summer tires out, got all the paraphernalia lined up, and then popped the trunk to get the two sockets out for the lug nuts - one regular, one for the security bolt. Car shut down while in gear, parking brake set, apply breaker bar to loosen the security bolt first. That done, remove the security insert and get sby Constantin - Main Forum
Still no official cause. Just a bunch of belts and suspenders fixes that are supposed to detect issues earlier, mitigate thermal runaway if it happens, etc. FWIW, NiCads had the same kinds of issues when they were introduced. And today they are poster children for safe batteries.by Constantin - Main Forum

Unless you enjoy this sort of thing on a DIY basis and are happy to be on the receiving end of learning experiences, then the only alternative to a licensed dealer is finding a good independent. I am very happy with auto engineering in Lexington, MA. The parts prices are similar to dealer but the labor is a lot lower.by Constantin - Main Forum

Hi Mike, Yes, this is an original panel and no, it was not involved in an accident. I've never treated the car to anything but a waxing from time to time (and certainly much longer periods now than in the past, thanks to three kids!) Inside the wheel well, I also saw some streaks of rust, ditto the engine bay. I attribute it to the harsh winters here (and yes, she gets driven in the snow, slusby Constantin - Main Forum

Hi guys and gals, Thanks again for the rust treatment suggestions, I really appreciated them and the POR gear is on order. Besides fixing the LCD for the climate control (classic rising sun failure) I am also in the market for a new stereo to replace the Becker gear that has started to fail (i.e. jammed CD in 6-CD changer, station scroll button only goes in one direction, etc.). Has anyone hereby Constantin - Main Forum
You guys are amazing and thank you for all the recommendations. The area of rust is the leading lip of the chassis that extends from the driver door to the wheel well. Thus, it is somewhat visible and not easily removable. However, the lip area is limited - maybe 3"x1" or so, and I plan on taking off as much rust as I can, doing the rust treatment and then coating the results with a paint thatby Constantin - Main Forum
Saint Gobain started near my old B-school in the Nemours area of France... and that's where I had a cracked windshield replaced... by the local Ford dealer. Still on the car and they even saved the MA inspection sticker! The guy remarked that I was unlike all French Porsche drivers, who went out of their way to be arrogant lugnuts. I know it's been a while, but I hope everyone here is doing well. I still have Irrational Exuberance but sadly between three little additions to the family and work, I don't get to exercise her much anymore. That's not to say that I don't love the car or fail to have a perma-grin every time I drive her though! I have six CD's held hostage in mine. The unit won't play them, nor will the storage unit eject them. I suspect a jam. I am planning on a Becker-ectomy this summer, substituting a iPod-ready Jensen unit instead. As a bonus, I get a CD-reader inside the car (why the Porsche Bose receiver with CD-changer option would feature a tape deck inside the car I can't fathom). However, in this day an agby Constantin - Parts for Sale
Oh dear.... I thought it was warm enough... the sun was shining... it felt pretty warm... but the PVC window went anyway! I suppose I shouldn't complain, 9 years with the original window is a pretty good run for a daily driver that did not enjoy garage protection.
