When I would start my 2012 base Boxster I would get a red warning “check coolant level” message. The message would go away in about 3 or 4 minutes when the car warmed up. I checked with the local mechanic I use and he said just add some water to the system. When I added about a cup of water to the car before starting it up for the first time each day I would not get the warning message.by Sayle - Main Forum
Well, I was finally able to get an appointment with a Porsche dealer in a nearby town for an oil change. I had the oil changed yesterday and the cost was $760! In years past I have used a shop here in Florida that knows Boxsters and they always charged $300 which I considered a bit much but no big deal. My Porsche dealer up in Ohio is nowhere near these numbers. At least I got my oil changedby Sayle - Main Forum
I’m storing my 2012 base Boxster in Florida for six months and I always change the oil before storing it. It appears I’ve waited too long before making an appointment because none of the places near me who know how to work on a Boxster can work me in before I leave. I have around seven thousand miles on the oil. Anyone have any thoughts on any damage the old oil may do to the engine? Mobiby Sayle - Main Forum
Yesterday I parked my 2012 Base Boxster and I set the parking brake before getting out. I also opened both the front and back trunks by pulling the electric switches next to the driver’s door before exiting the car. I took some equipment from both trunks and I left both trunk lids open - I lowered them but I didn’t push the lids all the way down locking the trunks. When I returned to the caby Sayle - Main Forum
I store my 2012 Base Boxster for six months every summer in Florida. I just disconnect the negative terminal and the car starts right up when I remove it from storage. One really big caution, make sure you leave the hood unlatched. If you don’t, you can’t get to the battery to hook it up because the hood is locked electronically. I forgot to leave the hood open one year and I had to haveby Sayle - Main Forum
Three days ago I was driving down a highway in my manual transmission Base Boxster. Traffic started to slow down and as I downshifted I heard a noise and the gear shift handle became completely loose. It clearly wasn’t connected to anything and was useless. The gearshift just flopped around. The car was stuck in third gear and I couldn’t shift gears. I was able to pull off the road and iby Sayle - Main Forum
Thank you Pedro. I’ll give it a try. You’re great!by Sayle - Main Forum
The outside surface is the problem. It has a dull appearance and feels a bit rough when I run my hand on it.by Sayle - Main Forum
The tail lights on my 2012 Boxster have become somewhat cloudy. What do you recommend to clear them up? Thanks.by Sayle - Main Forum
I have these tires on my Base 2012 and they have worked well in Ohio and Florida. When it’s time to replace them I’ll buy the same tires without hesitation.by Sayle - Main Forum
My battery is 4 years old and I only drive my Boxster around 6 months a year as I leave it in Florida during the summer. When the car is in storage I disconnect the negative terminal as there is no electricity in my storage unit that would allow me to put a minder on the battery. When I take the car out of storage it starts right up so it appears that the battery tolerates this regimen. My queby Sayle - Main Forum
Well, here’s the rest of my locked trunk saga. As I mentioned above, I couldn’t get the trunk to open by applying power to the appropriate fuse and grounding the power source to the door stop hinge. I tried a self contained power unit and I tried using jumper cables attached to a car. The trunk wouldn’t open. I understood that there is a backup cable buried behind the left front tire thaby Sayle - Main Forum
I have decided to have the local Porsche dealer solve this problem and I have an appointment this coming Wednesday. I hope they can get the trunk lid open. What an avoidable mess!!! I will let you folks know how things turn out. Thank you for your suggestions and a big thank you to Pedro.by Sayle - Main Forum
Pedro, Thank you for your information. Just want to confirm that I should remove the left tire to reach the cable that will open my trunk. Thanks again for your help. Our group is fortunate to have you as a resource.by Sayle - Main Forum
I disconnected the negative terminal on my battery to put my 2012 base Boxster in storage. I then did one of the dumbest things I've ever done and closed the trunk. I asked for help on this board on how to open the trunk and was told to remove the cover on the fuse box, using the yellow colored extractor pull out the red fuse and apply power to the fuse with a positive cable and then ground theby Sayle - Main Forum
I can’t thank you gentlemen enough for your information. The electric controls can certainly be convenient, but locked compartments are sufficiently common place because of battery problems it would be nice to have a simple pull lever in the cabin as a backup should the electric buttons become inoperable. Of course, if I’d slowed down a bit storing my car this never would have happened. Thby Sayle - Main Forum
Last week I put my 2012 base Boxster in storage for several months. I rented a storage unit that is 10 x 20 and my car fits in OK but I had to crowd the right wall of the unit so I could more easily open the driver’s door. There is no electricity in the unit so a battery tender wasn’t an option. I disconnected the negative battery cable. I didn’t set the parking brake but I left the carby Sayle - Main Forum
I may have to store my 2012 Boxster for several months in Florida. Is it better to use a battery charger or just disconnect the battery? If I disconnect my battery, when I reconnect it will I loose certain functions, and if so, how do I reclaim them? Thanks.by Sayle - Main Forum
I’m planning to buy a used Boxster to base in Florida and use when I’m down for the winter season. What years, if any, should I avoid, and is there a year where reliability trended up?by Sayle - Main Forum
I understand the concerns and problems associated with using summer tires in the winter. What are the problems with using winter tires in the summer?by Sayle - Main Forum
You may have seen my recent posts regarding my attempts to find all-season tires for my 2012 base Boxster. It came with GoodYear F1 205/55 ZR17 all-season front tires and GoodYear F1 235/50 ZR17 all-season rear tires. Those tires worked so well in the four Ohio seasons where I live that, when those tires were worn out, I replaced them with the same tires and the replacements also worked well.by Sayle - Main Forum
Well. this is frustrating. I've read with interest the comments posted and very much appreciate the information provided. My 2012 base Boxster came with Good-Year Eagle F1 tires that are marked All-Season on the sidewall They are 205/55ZR17 tires on the front and 235/50ZR17 tires on the rear. They have worked well in both winter and summer conditions in Ohio. I replaced them once with the sby Sayle - Main Forum
My dilemma is I’ll be driving in winter conditions when I head south for Florida. I’ll spend some time driving in Florida and then I will probably encounter late winter conditions when I head home. I’m still looking for any input from drivers who drove on winter tires in the summer. Tire rack suggested Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II as a good winter tire. Thanks.by Sayle - Main Forum
My 2012 base Boxster came with GoodYear tires that were all season tires. I’m close to needing new tires and I went to Tire Rack and, as Pedro posted above, they don’t show any all season tires. This is my third Boxster and my experience with summer tires in the winter was nothing short of scary. On Boxster #1 (2004) I bought winter tires and had them put on in the winter. It was a pain iby Sayle - Main Forum

Pedro, I’ll be spending the winter in Bosnia Springs. What is the address of your new shop so I can find you for service? Thanks and good luck with your new location.by Sayle - Main Forum
Thanks for your suggestion of the Continental DWS tires. Continental’s website says they don’t make them for my Boxster. I don’t know if it’s because of the 17” wheel size or not. You mentioned Michelin Pilots. Do they work in cold weather? Thanks again.by Sayle - Main Forum
My 2012 Boxster came with Goodyear F1 17” all-season tires and they worked well in Ohio winters and they had long tread life. I checked on Tire Rack and with my dealer and learned that Goodyear no longer makes that tire and there aren’t any 17” all-season tires made for my Boxster. I drive so few miles in winter that I don’t want to have to buy two sets of tires, one set for summer andby Sayle - Main Forum
