Dude - You're scaring me, perhaps consider a professional mechanic to keep you from making an expensive mistake? And remember that brake fluid (which you didn't list) is perhaps super important too! Here's a thread on the topic, but in short, blue cap is coolant, and black cap is power steering. Here's a diagram from the same post.by jlegelis - Main Forum
... or in the inimitable words of Alfred E. Neuman: "What, Me Worry? Sorry, time marches on... as does Porsche development. I (for one) can't wait to be passed by a 395HP turbo Boxster, almost exactly double the 201HP of the original 986. Now *that's* progress.... - JohnL '01 986Sby jlegelis - Main Forum
>> I don't see myself following Porsche down the road of increased reliance on expensive to replace/repair electronics and turbo four cylinder power. Actually, it might be your last volume production car as well as each and every large manufacturer is heading in that exact direction, as driven by safety and fuel efficiency regulations. Perhaps a kit from a small manufacturer (which sby jlegelis - Main Forum
Next time try analyzing the oil by sending a sample to Blackstone Labs (no affiliation, just a happy customer). I do it every fall, see below for my results from the last five driving seasons (so far so good)!by jlegelis - Main Forum
None of my cars have the sensors hooked up... I'm too meticulous to wait for the idiot light to come one.by jlegelis - Main Forum
>> In one video, note highly modified GT2 leave me for dead - just for the record i am flat the the floor the entire time. With at least a 200hp deficit, I'd say the 986 performed admirably!by jlegelis - Main Forum
While my 14-year-old summer-only 986 S has low miles (38k), I'm wondering if there's any common 'defensive practice' advising preemptive replacement of the water pump due to age? Nothing is leaking, the bearings seem fine - should I bother? Thanks, John L Boston 2001 986 Sby jlegelis - Main Forum
Sounds like the car has served you very well, and is probably worth more to you in utility than it is on the open market (and I love hearing good stories about high mileage cars). KBB indicates a 2000 non-S in 'good' condition and 153k miles is worth about $4k, so in purely economic terms, an IMS and clutch replacement will cost almost what the entire car market value, making the IMS a very expby jlegelis - Main Forum

In my experience, a dealer 'fix' is usually replacement of parts until the problem goes away, not actually 'fixing' a broken piece. Since you're out of warranty, perhaps consider a visit to a reputable local independent like a shop recommended by your local PCA chapter?by jlegelis - Main Forum
>> The BMW i-drive is just overkill >> My old SAAB had electronic motors to select zones Perhaps its' just poorly designed technology that's the issue?by jlegelis - Main Forum
Agree that it's silly to be dependent on TPMS, but (as in my BMW), but I would argue that real oil-level time monitoring is worlds better than a static dipstick. In any case, no sense being upset at (Porsche's) decisions one can't control. While not happy about a host of recent trends and innovations, I prefer to embrace technology's progress, rather than be grumpy about it. As a comparby jlegelis - Main Forum
>> I don't know in which year Porsche made the (dumb) decision to eliminate the oil dip stick I hear this sentiment often expressed, but am at a loss to understand. Should we still use a dipstick to check the level in the fuel tank, or a thermometer to check the coolant temp? I appreciate electronically checking the oil each and every time I start the engine. Hybrids, e-cars, and such are all 'interim' technologies, full of compromises and expense. Hydrogen is where it's at, though still a long way to go in terms of distribution infrastructure, etc.by jlegelis - Main Forum

Sorry boys and girls, might I delicately suggest the 'manual-only' GT4 is just another example of Porsche's cynical marketing, intentionally detuning the GT4 via choice of gearbox? Surely a PDK GT4 is good for two seconds at the 'ring, thereby embarrassing it's 991 stable mates? An EVO piece in 2013 said PDK was good for 1.5 seconds on a small course (Bedford Autodrome). Extrapolate that difby jlegelis - Main Forum
The writing is on the wall, even Porsche has figured that out. To whit, while the new Macan Turbo is obviously a turbo, anyone notice the new 'Macan S' is a also turbo. Just as the manual gearbox will be completely gone in a few years, there are too many efficiencies availed by a turbo architecture to ignore it solely for the benefit of whiney enthusiasts like us. Yep, that's miles on the oil. I test yearly to see if it's possible to detect any issues in the event of a bearing failure. Of course that assumes bearings 'fail slowly', and would give enough time for the results to show up in the oil as a precursor to actual bearing failure, but I'm not sure that's how it works in real life. At the very least it's peace of mind that things seem 'normal' frby jlegelis - Main Forum
Here are the results of my annual end-of-season oil test (just before putting the car away for the winter I change the oil and send a sample to Blackstone for analysis). This year I specifically asked about any early signs of IMS 'issues' - see report comments.by jlegelis - Main Forum

Hyper-cars are a dime a dozen, and new billionaires are minted monthly. I don't expect Porsche will sit on the sidelines for long, letting those $$$ go to McClaren or Ferrari, so guessing a '919' is on the drawing boards as we speak. Hell 918 x $950 is almost $900M in cash flow. Build yours here!by jlegelis - Main Forum
Check to make sure the FVD flash is 50 state legal (especially CA and MA). I had the exact same issue (O2 & SAI 'not ready'), because the flash disabled the SAI completely. Worked fine once I had the map adjusted. I think your stock map will be fine, or you may want to get a '50-state' aftermarket tune to avoid this dance every year...by jlegelis - Main Forum
Sure it's not a kit?? The real ones are so expensive and rare that you are way more likely to see a replica than a real one. On Labor Day I was at the Lime Rock Historics in the Porsche corral, and the 'kit' Speedsters and 550 Spyders were bumming me out. Spectators were drooling all over them, none the wiser, and never giving my Boxster a second glance (not that I cared). I don't have a pby jlegelis - Main Forum

It's amazing to me that GM is still using torque converters (like the the crappy old 'tiptronic') even for the 'new' 8 speed, and has not yet 'shifted' to a PDK-like twin clutch architecture. All that wasted heat in a torque converter is also wasted energy / mileage / efficiency, guessing it's a cost issue... OTOH, I'd be amazed if a PDK were truly 'overheating', in any more sense than a plaby jlegelis - Main Forum
