Thanks all (Charlie!) - it's definitely not in backwards. A friend of mine is a professor of fashion at a local college... she's always dealing with interesting textile constructions / issues. I'll give her a ping and report back.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Just received back my third year of Blackstone oil analysis back for my '01S... thought you data junkies might find it interesting, see attached. Sure, I don't drive the car enough (3rd car/off the road in winters/kids), but it's nice to see that things are stable from a metallurgical aspect. Here's hoping that any pending interrnal / IM* issues might reveal themselves in the oil first, but aby jlegelis - Main Forum
The rear shelf carpet on my '01 986 has become dog eared (see pic) on both passenger and driver side. Wondering if anybody else has seen this, or addressed it? I'm guessing it's due to age (perhaps the carpet and foam backing have expanded / shrunk at different rates, cause curvature). I tried using adhesive backed velcro, but the glue let go after a short period. Any collective wisdom? Thaby jlegelis - Main Forum
Two man-years worth of work to move the steering wheel 12 inches... the phrase "more money than sense" comes to mind. I'm sure the resale value is fabulous, not that the owner is likely to care.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Here's a possible alternative: use Windows Virtual PC (look it up) to create a Windows 3.1 VM running on Windows 7. Here's a helpful video: This is pretty out there, but a least you won't be chasing down old hardware.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Thanks. I've got the original '01 lock mechanism, so according to Pedro's DIY (http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Replace_Ignition_Switch.html) I can use the Audi part #4A0 905 849 B. Looks like there are also a variety of aftermarket suppliers too... any suggestions on which brand (OEM or other) to use?by jlegelis - Main Forum
Today on a vigorous New England foliage drive in my 2001 S, while cruising along at mid throttle, the engine and radio briefly spontaneously cut out, no other symptoms (or warning lights?).... we proceeded normally for the rest of the excursion. Battery connections are OK, should I preemptively replace the original ignition switch as a precaution? Anything else to check? - John L Bostonby jlegelis - Main Forum
I noticed the Fabspeed setup has the crossover pipe, so that may be what's required. Unfortunately I'm current using Dansk headers and rear cats (no front cats), so his setup does't work for me... pity. The quest goes on....by jlegelis - Main Forum
Nice! Did you baseline on the dyno beforehand?by jlegelis - Main Forum
Background: 2001 986S, with factory PSE exhaust added around 2005, pneumatic not installed, so running 'loud' all the time. Goal: Overall car weight reduction for autocross Actions to date: installed smaller battery, remove spare tire, using BBS RS-GT wheels instead of factory 18". Total reduction: ~100lbs Next step: Given that the factory PSE weighs about ~50lbs and is hanging out the backby jlegelis - Main Forum
I've got the ROW 030 in my '01S, purchased during the PPBB group buy from Suncoast in 2002, and have driving it for 10 years, so I'm qualified to comment. For my purposes (98% street driving, 2% track days), I find it the 030 a great setup, especially on lousy New England roads where the (higher performing) PSS9's would be unbearable for daily driving. The 030 is a *tiny* bit lower, than stocby jlegelis - Main Forum
Very interesting thesis. Here's mine: Porsche cheaped out on the drain plug, which is prone to failure even when properly torqued. I'll stick with the benefits of a self-installed properly-torqued aftermarket drain plug, and stop worrying about stripped sockets or pan threads. I'm also not aware of a maintenance schedule for 'drain plugs', ergo, there's something amiss if one needs to purchaby jlegelis - Main Forum
I've used this aftermarket drain plug from LN Engineering, and have been very satisfied. Also it has an oversized 10mm internal hex to prevent the problem many of us have experienced. No affiliation, blah blah blah. - John L Boston '01 Sby jlegelis - Main Forum
Just bought a 'new to me' 2007 BMW 328iX coupe to handle Boston winters while the Boxster slumbers. Awesome car... really liking the BMW 'DNA'. In any case, I was washing the car recently and noticed a small sticker affixed to the rear taillight. It looks electronic in nature, and appears to contain and antenna and microchip (see picture). Anybody have any idea what this is before I removeby jlegelis - Main Forum
I've got an annoying, intermittent noise, seemingly emitting from where base of the passenger-side interior A-pillar molding intersects the leading edge of the dash. I'd like to remove the molding to see if this is the source of the trouble... any pointers on how to do so without breaking trim pieces? Thoughts / experience appreciated! - John L Boston '01 986 Sby jlegelis - Main Forum
>> My indy said that my car is one of the tightest Porsches he has driven with half the miles. Odd, given the mass production that produces them. Interesting sentiment. For cars and other mechanized products, I for one would much prefer 'mass produced' over 'hand-made'. A well defined, consistent and repeatable process (e.g. robot assembly of cars) contributes to a reliable end result.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Why bother? Honestly, mapping technology is moving so quickly that the built-in OEM platforms can't possibly keep up. All Android phones have free, voice activated, turn-by-turn mapping built in for free. iPhones can get this functionality as an add-on... both you can easily move from car-to-car. Just my $0.02.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Would *love* to see the data - am considering as a 'winter' upgrade. Also Pedro, what device do you use to obtain your data?by jlegelis - Main Forum
Just wondering about the wisdom / necessity for regularly changing Porsche's 'lifetime' coolant? My '01S (only 37k miles) still contains it's original coolant, and has only been topped up once with about a pint of distilled water. The car runs perfectly, and an electrolysis test of the coolant reveals a seemingly 'normal' voltage of .061V. Paranoia suggests I should consider a flush soon, bby jlegelis - Main Forum
>> But in any case if you give it a good Italian tune every now and then, the valves will remain clean. LOL!!! I *sold* my '83 Alfa Spider (fun car, very reliable as the engine management was provided by Bosch L-Jet) to purchase my '01 Boxster S. Now I'm hearing I might need to do an Italian tune up every so often on the Porsche too... Of course my car regularly sees pulls to redline,by jlegelis - Main Forum
... get a referral from you local PCA members, etc. You'll be glad you did! >> wonder if the engine timing belt is about to go too Ummm... perhaps a quick reading of any decent technical menu will calm your fears (hint: chains, not belts).by jlegelis - Main Forum
