The customer will be more interested in the cost of ownership than the cost of energy. The major factor in the cost of ownership is depreciation. The game changer is this regard is the Taycan. We have no data on this cost today, but I am willing to bet that the cost of depreciation will favor electric with the introduction of the Taycan. The Porsche dealer network is a huge advantage when compared to Tesla. One report I saw brought up the fact that dealer service out of warranty is essentially non-existent for Tesla.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I wonder how many will know that the tractor IS a Porsche. Anyway, the target for new Porsches is the high income crowd which will be watching the Super Bowl.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The rationale behind the turbo 4 was to get increased power with improved fuel consumption numbers. Sadly, the better fuel consumption was realized by running the car at unrealistic acceleration.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
It's hard to see where things are going, but the enthusiast market brings customers in to the Porsche dealer. It reminds me of how the Corvette contributes to the GM and Chevrolet brand in ways that are hard to quantify. I just sold our 2008 Corvette with all the good track options because it spent too much time in the garage. I don't miss it nearly as much as I do our stored Boxster, but I haby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I think what I will do is start looking at available 981's just to get a feel for the market. The decision has a serious external factor. My wife loves the current Boxster and drives it as much as I do. She has absolutely no interest in technical details. She is a clinical psychologist in private practice with no engineering expertise but loves the way the car drives. A PDK transmission wouldby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I love our Boxster, but I always like to have in my head where the next step would be if I wanted a newer Porsche. I know that in the next few years I would be looking at a top replacement (big bucks). I have not seen a whisper of a problem with the turbo 4 cylinder cars. I like having the car serviced at our local Porsche dealer which has been outstanding in every respect, and I'm sure thereby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The most informative article I have seen was in Forbes, so not a source car nuts typically check out.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
In addition to owning a 2010 Boxster, I own a 2008 Corvette which I have put up for sale. Porsche dealers offer expensive service, but very competent service. Not so much in the case of the Corvette. Only a few Chevrolet dealers are competent to service the Corvette. If you decide to go with a Corvette, you need to find a dealer qualified to work on the car. A local Corvette club would be whby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
There are plenty of issues with the 986 other than the IMS. I suggest you look at the possibility of a 987.2 (2009 or later) and at least do a risk assessment. When I looked at this topic a few years ago, I was surprised that the 987.2 cars were not that much more expensive, all things considered. My guess is that the poor reliability of the 986 contributed to the price decline of that modelby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
It's my understanding that there is absolutely no real improvement in mileage with the turbo 4. The turbo allows the automakers to take advantage of the fact that the test protocol allows an artificially high mileage when the car is operated under very low acceleration which is unrealistic in actual use.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
If you are sure there has been a change in the car's behavior, if it behaves differently than when new, I would replace the battery. I personally have had 3 instances of batteries which developed an intermittent bad cell.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I would look for a Fluke digital multimeter on eBay. That has more than a voltmeter. The resistance function can be helpful in electrical troubleshooting.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
After various issues with other cars I have had, I don't keep a battery for more than 4 years.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The dealer mounted the bulb which I had purchased the day before for a cost of just $34.95 labor and included a complimentary car wash! The fact that it's a 5mm socket explains why I couldn't find the socket myself. The socket itself is a small hex in the end of a circular rod. The illustration in the owner's manual is definitely misleading. This still leaves the necessity of working on the hby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I've decided to let the dealer do it. I thought I would try to use my own socket, but I had trouble removing the side carpeting. I'm sure it's easy enough given the right technique but I am reluctant to experiment and force things.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Right now i"m having trouble finding the socket that is supposed to be in the tool kit!by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Thanks. I just wanted to check to see if there were any precautions not mentioned in the manual. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The procedure in the owner's manual seems rather complicated, so I wonder if anyone has done the headlight bulb replacement themselves. I was surprised that the entire headlight assembly needs to be removed from the car by pulling from the front after proper steps have been taken to free it from the car.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The Boxster is the only mid-engine car I have driven, but I can still make some guesses about mid-engine Corvette handling compared to a modern Vette. The weight of the 2010 Boxster is 2943 pounds to 2987 pounds. The weight of the 2008 Corvette is 3132 pounds to 3199 pounds. I own both cars. My Corvette has the Z51 autocross package and manual transmission. I can say that there is no compariby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
So I went to gas up the Boxster, used the computer reset lever to get rid of the error message and got back to where the psi reading on all four wheels was blank. After about a mile the overtemp light went out and the pressure readings on all four wheels was normal. The owners manual basically says if the TPMS has intermittent problems not to worry about it. The manual makes no mention of a faby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
If I just wanted to fix the car and was not interested in identifying the problem source, I would disconnect the battery and reconnect it after a few minutes to see if that took care of the issue.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I have been checking to see what I could tell the tech when I take the car in next Tuesday. The symptoms are that the tire pressure warning indicator flashes for a minute and then remains solid. The TPM message disappears at this time if I reset using the computer lever, and the tire readings are blank. At the same time the over temp warning light comes on. The overtemp light is a false indicby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Just a couple of years old. I think it has to go back to the dealer, and it's time for an oil change anyway.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The indications are that there is some mechanical (relay, etc.) malfunction. I just started the car and the TPM message is still there. More interestingly, the temp warning light comes on after a minute or so of running, and the temp gauge on the dash shows that the car is at the high range of normal operation.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The sensors are just a couple of years old. I had them changed when I replaced the tires. The owner's manual lists one thing that could cause the message is hot tires. I will see if the message is still there after the car cools off.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Drove the Boxster for about 45 minutes today and put it in the garage. I backed the car out in the driveway to wash it after about an hour and got a "TPM inactive" message and the tire pressure indicator was flashing. After a bit, the tire pressure warning indicator remained lit continually and no pressure readings are available. It is very hot today, nearly 90 degrees, and when I garaged theby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Thanks for posting. When I read your original post again, I realized we have cars that are essentially identical. I think there were no significant changes between 09 and 10 model years. This isn't something I need right now, since I'm off on a vacation in 2 days, but the next time someone cleans out the drains it would be useful if they could post pictures showing the location of the drains for reference. Thanks, Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
