I had a shifter cable break after the car had about 20K miles and was 3 and a half years old. Luckily I was in town and had it towed to the local Porsche dealer. I don't bother with the other Porsche boards, and I've been checking in here for years, since the period when everybody was talking RMS issues and wondering about extended warranties. I had never heard of this problem until it happeneby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
but I have to say something here. My 2010 which was well taken care of and garaged has been no problem. There was one incident, covered under warranty. A broken shifter cable which was taken care of under the original warranty. I bought the car when it was 3 years and and had a year left on the warranty. The problem was so rare that Pedro hadn't heard of it happening. Do the research and loby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
This is a roofing staple picked up in my driveway a week and a half ago. It happened to my other sports car, 2008 Corvette with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. One leg of the staple punctured the right rear tire in the side of the tread near the junction with the sidewall. A couple of years ago I found out about a new tire plug method from the BMW club magazine. I had a Z3 at the time. The paby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
There has been an intensive internal investigation, and Porsche must not be involved in the deception. I have driven a Porsche diesel. I was given a Cayenne loaner the last time I took my Boxster in. Very nice SUV, but I do not want to be driving a SUV that I care much about through a Minneapolis winter. This whole thing could get very nasty in the future. There is talk of investor suits andby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Right now the problem seems to be confined to diesel. It may go beyond that in the future. In particular I remember reading somewhere that turbos don't really get better gas mileage but it just appears that way according to the testing standards which are done with low throttle.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Agree completely and add that if you can find a car that has lived its life garaged that would be worth 1-2K. See the thread by MarcW below for a discussion on cost of top replacement.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I would factor in the cost of Pedro's DOF modification if buying a Porsche with IMS.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Check out the attached link to The Guardian. I think we are OK, but if I owned one of the recalled cars and had to bring it in to have it "fixed" which would no doubt reduce performance, I would be very angry.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I've been thinking along the same lines. Electrically assisted steering was supposed to be a disaster, now not so much. With computer control of the throttle, new possibilities such as control based on accelerator pedal velocity and acceleration instead of just pedal position are available. This could do a lot to help with engine response.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I had a BMW Z3 before the Boxster, and water pumps were a well know problem area. People often replaced the water pump at 40K mile intervals as a precaution. Are there any Boxster owners doing the same sort of thing? What would be the recommended replacement interval?by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Not necessarily a bad idea, but I don't have the time for it. If I had to replace my car due to unforeseen circumstances, I'd be looking for a good used 981 most likely.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
It's not so much that I dislike car shopping, but that I don't see myself following Porsche down the road of increased reliance on expensive to replace/repair electronics and turbo four cylinder power.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I replaced the cap last year at about this time and that solved my slow coolant leak. I just checked it today and had to add about 1 cup of distilled water to bring the level up to max. It appears that the rubber gasket deforms a bit over time.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I admit I don't scan the other Porsche boards, because I get what I need here. On the other hand, it would be good to know if your case is an isolated incident. I know that when I looked at PPBB years ago, the main concern was RMS. The IMS problem was there of course, but it wasn't recognized as a serious problem for awhile.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
As the owner of a 9A1 engine out of warranty I'm obviously very interested. My guess is that if the problem is not trivial, Porsche will have the engine shipped back to Germany for analysis and you will get a new motor.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The Super Sports are also cheaper than the PS2 for some reason.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I have the Boxster S wheels on my car. The rear tires need to be replaced and I have scheduled that for a week from Monday. The original equipment tires are Michelin Pilot Sport 2, and that is what is mounted on the front. I have asked them to put Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires on the rear. The Pilot Super Sport tires are better in every way than the PS2. I realize that I'm breaking the ruby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I very much like the filtering options. I was looking for a private party sale with all service records, hopefully one owner.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
It was a 1973 Citabria. I flew it away from the factory in Osceola, Wisconsin and kept it until 1991. It took months to put it into perspective. The plane in the video has large tundra tires, which I did not have. Also, the plane was certified for basic aerobatic maneuvers. I won't go on, but give yourself some time to plan your next step.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I had a slow leak and there was no visible residue anywhere. Replacing the cap with the OEM part solved the problem.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
So, does he prefer the Boxster Spyder to a 981 which is also without turbo?by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The Boxster is safely tucked away for the winter, so my experience is limited to the winter car, Honda Pilot. I just installed WAZE on my iPhone and wonder what people think of it. I would say a car charger is required because it is definitely a power hog. The GPS must be active, and the screen does not dim when in use. I would guess the feature of identifying speed traps would be of limitedby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
On the 2008 Vette coupe (manual) I typically get 28-30 mpg cruising in 6th gear on the highway. Spirited driving on a run with the Corvette club will result in 17 mpg. Driving normally in town will give 15 mpg typically. A day at the track doing HPDE has resulted in 8 mpg! The Boxster gives around 30 mpg on the highway, 20 mpg on a run with the Porsche club and 18 to 20 mpg driving in town.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I just reread your post and found something I missed the first time through. It sounds like you are planning on just replacing the rear tires. If so, they should be the same brand and type as the front tires. Mixing tires front to back is generally regarded as a bad idea.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I think we may have covered this topic before, but my guess is that if you turn the car in, you will be giving it away for substantially less than its real value. In fact, I would be surprised if you don't receive a couple of offers from board members to buy your car for more than 53K. Of course you would have to come up with the 53K to get title to the car.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
My guess is that the intro of the glass rear window has a lot to do with the low demand for a hard top. When I purchased our 987 I briefly considered driving it in the winter, but didn't consider the hard top. Looking at the cost of a winter tire package, we decided to store the car for awhile and see if we could do without driving our Arizona car in the salt. This is our second year sharing ouby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I guess my main question would be if the car is for sale by a Porsche dealer why is it not a CPO? No accidents and only 8000 miles. Perhaps others can chime in on this.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The January issue of Car and Driver contains the latest installment of their "10 Best Cars" feature. The Boxster/Cayman is included, as always. What makes this article so interesting is the explanation of why the Boxster is so special. I gave the article to my wife, as she has no technical background and trying to explain polar moment of inertia would be an exercise in frustration. That's worth a 10% discount on parts. I don't know if you factored that in to the $1000 or not. Also you might think about just letting it go until the starter dies. Whether that's reasonable depends on if you plan on taking it on long trips away from a Porsche dealer or not.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The clear choice is whether the warranty on the work done by the Porsche dealer to install a new starter is worth the $750 price difference. I frankly don't know which way I would go. I guess I would check the details on the warranty.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
