The downside of the no floating threads approach is that an important update ...say after someone who asked a question than did some investigation and the fix worked out but only after a few days reports the fix...would escape your notice. Re the thread you are mentioning...just don't read or respond to it. It takes a couple of page-downs but you'll get to the new threads and eventually that lonby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

I was going to Germany for my son's wedding and wanted to rent a Mercedes...nothing fancy (Diesel, e-class size, cloth interior) ...just a car big enough for 4 people and luggage for 2 ladies for the festivities. Made arrangements from here and when I got to the rental counter, they asked for an additional credit card. I only had one and my wife only had the same one. You don't run it a single rev more. You decide what you are willing to spend if necessary...in either time or money or a combination. You start looking for an engine internals expert. You ask their advice based on your investigation. You ponder your options (some worst case options are listed here https://sites.google.com/site/mikefocke2/what-can-you-do-if-your-engine-is-blown) And you deciby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Certainly on 986s a plain code reader can reset the CEL. I'd suspect the 987 is the same and the ~$50-100 investment in a code reader would pay off many times on many cars...has for me.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
only word with some minimum voltage already present in the battery. They aren't designed to charge a flat battery. So you really need a charger/maintainer. Read the specs carefully.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I would guess so but with the same pattern and a slight compound difference you are probably not so far off from the fronts that it would make a big difference. Not like all-season and UHPsummer mixed.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Porsche's with factory HIDs are all equipped with headlight washers. I presume because the bulbs don't burn hot enough to burn off accumulated ice, snow, slush. And the fluid in the washers helps? So no worry most years in FL about putting aftermarket HIDs in standard lenses without washers. But what about the rest of the country?by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
The change from N0 to N1 to N2 etc just means they changed the compound used and had to reapply for re-certification. Higher number could be they discovered an improvement or it could be they discovered a way to make it cheaper. Would I mix different numbers as long as the same pattern/N-number was on the axle? Yes as long as the tread design looked similar. My first Boxster had a set of Pirelliby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
follow the route guidance to never turn left? Saves gas and time according to the delivery truck companies. You are just complaining because you want to blame your problem on the poor Porsche designer who couldn't anticipate such casual disregard for the way you are supposed to drive. have been set by multiple motors. But do any of those engines you named run 200k miles? Think of keeping them synchronized in the varied conditions cars operate in. And aren't we moving towards multiple motors with the Volt and similar EVs?by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
at least in the UK I've seen the press releases. They must have some 987 parts they need to get rid of before the new 981 models are shipped as this is Porsche Marketing's standard end of life kicker.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Since there are 3 bulbs of the same type in the standard headlights, I'd suggest a move em around scenerio to see if the problem follows the bulb or the socket. Only trick is to remember that the low beam is high in the assembly and high beam is low. So take your high beam bulb from one and put it in the low beam of the failing one. Since the bulb is known good, you'll have a quick diagnosis.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

I did the 60k when I bought the car at 42k to establish a baseline. I'll do the 90k at slightly less than 60k this year. Other than a tired O2 sensor and the airbag light issue, I really have done nothing but maintain it. So yes I have been fortunate. But I also paid on the front end to get it into shape through a great mechanic who really knew what he was doing and after he did my PPI we addressby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I think you have about an hour and it is deliberately set that way. I regularly am horrified to see typos and go back and almost immediately correct em. My point was if you are trying to establish if there was oil penetration through the inner seal then shouldn't you be letting gravity see if the oil leaks from the bearing through the inner seal. You can also rip the seal off and look and see if there is grease still in among the balls I guess. I get the impression from reading posts from those who have done it themselves of watched that not allby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Shouldn't it be pointing down with the seal side as that is where oil would get in from and out from.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
In my red 914 and at the age of 27-28, I was always on the verge of losing my license and they only ticketed me half the times they stopped me. In my silver Porsches with my thinning hair, never even been stopped. I think it has to do with some learned behavior..knowing where they are and when you have to be careful. But the cost for the difference between a middling-optioned base 987 and the worth of a '99 986 in trade is in the $40k range. For around half that you could install a new more powerful and completely rebuilt engine with all the fixes, plus replace ancillaries like AOS, oil tank, anti-freeze tank, clutch, CV boots, etc new too. varies by person, time, circumstances, etc. Buy versus lease. New versus used. Repair versus buy. Is this the last repair? How will I feel if the new one is dinged in a parking lot? a failures per car/year figure. 5 to 10% failures on a car that can be 13 years old is far different than the same % on a 1 or 2 year old car. Not that we know if any of these percentage estimates (including ones I've used in discussions) are even close to accurate. Most of the samples are too small. Navarro does. Raby found the hand holding was too expensive in time for the profit on the sale. He prefers to be responsible for the ones he does rather than try to support all those who try but then have problems some of which may have nothing to do with the part he sold.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
