There are more failures from failed water pumps than IMS bearings according to someone who sees lots of failures. There are now over 20 different failure causes that have been observed in M96 engines...and the list is growing. And we could probably say the same sorts of things if someone was examining some other manufacturer's engines in similar detail and quantity.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
The last three aren't surprising, given that you have no signals to help you control the air/fuel mix. Only hope your cats haven't been damaged as a result. So why would all 4 signals be saying the same fault..and a short at that? The codes say one of 3 things...DME, sensor or harness. You have checked the wiring (or 2 mechanics say they have), and replaced the sensors. But there is a specificby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Parts for Sale

has had a high of around 40 and a low around 25F recently. I used to store my '99 and '01 outside under a Noah fabric cover in a similar climate (NOVA) and occasionally I'd pull the cover off and put it in the front trunk to take advantage of a nice day to drive it and you'd have thought I'd notice a patch of condensation. All of the above sounds spot on. I used the Yellow Dog kit, just for ease of use, ordered a 34R mail online (delivered price was better than I could find locally and I wasn't in a hurry), and had to replace a cable with one a bit longer from Autozone. The cable is an easy match, take your old one. And pick the thickest cable size (smaller number is better this time IIRC). I think about 2" longerby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
is added dust that filters into the car when the garage door opens. No big deal for a few days at a time. But I just applied leather cleaner to my seats and was amazed at how much dirt came off on the cloth. I had been leaving the top down, I think I'm changing that even though putting it down when I go out requires a get-out-of-the-car chop for me.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

Read Road and Track Car of the Year Issue Jan 2011 articles on the M3 and the downsizing and turbofication of their engines. They aren't going for displacement. As I read the issue it seemed almost all the cars reviewed or previewed were smaller displacement than their prior generation. (Excluding the F-car and the B-car that does 268MPH!) In the face of reduced allocations and thus availability to the NA market. Considering the time of year and the spot in the model cycle, I don't see nearly as many distress ads from dealers as I used to or would expect.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I asked for a total hoses replacement and he said no need and he'd just watch them. Even though I had asked and was willing to $, he didn't want to. I listened, figured he was the expert on this car. No problems in 5 years since.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Is how the Porsche parts are designed/built and how successful those designs are. We know a bit about how the LN parts are designed/built, the materials and differences in design between the Porsche-sourced and LN-sourced parts. We know only from anecdotal telling of how many problems have been reported with engines using each design. We don't have any good statistics...and probably never willby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
70+ yesterday but a storm front came through last night and a cold front is coming through in about 4 hours that will drop the temperatures to the 20s. So since the toy is sitting out there right now with its top down, time to go for a last run and then wash it before putting it away for a while. My only question is should I bother with the Noah cover or will I get a few stretches of good weathby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

A starting list might be the list of items Jake replaces as part of his cpo motor program. It is designed to address weak points that can be fixed without seriously going into the block. -Update the IMS bearing with the LN/ FSI unit -Replace the water pump -Replace lifters with FSI updated units -Replace chain guides and vario-cam wear pads -Replace clutch assembly -Replace AOS -Reby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

You generally replace the rotors when their thickness is measured and it is no longer in spec (or if they are warped). Mine lasted 45k miles of urban driving...the most demanding type of driving for brake wear. By all means change the pads and the brake fluid...especially the latter. There are lots of pads and every one is a compromise. So without telling us what your priorities are (dust, noiby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

I'm 67 so have been driving for 51+ years. Of all the long road trips I've taken, I've had one tire delamination fortunately at the exit off the freeway in Acron when they made tires there ('64). And one case where the maintenance required light came on in a '89 Dodge mini-van and of course the owner's manual didn't tell me it was a routine-service-needs-to-be-scheduled message so I stopped. I had used the edit function like Leor, in a responsible manner not correcting an opinion or trying to make myself look good but as a vehicle to make my reply more accurate, useful and readable. Many other forums use this feature but limit the time for the reply. Because someone using the search feature may pick up the original and not the entire thread, the added fact correction or readability iby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Board suggestions
But I'm not buying a Leaf. Today I have to lug a 6 foot package back from the store, stop at the grocery store, return and take 4 people to a fun center 20 miles away. Sounds like the Leaf could do that. But then I pack two bikes and luggage to prepare to take 4 people 40 miles one way tomorrow followed by a 5 mile shopping excursion, then 40 miles back. Could 100 miles do that? Not with any assby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

That assumes the engine is strong enough to handle the extra power. Some say it is (those generally have a self interest in that solution) and some say it isn't (and they have an interest in an alternate solution). And I have doubts a car would be totaled over a simple fender and headlight. That was all my first Boxster needed too I thought but the bill got to $26k and they stopped counting. Yes I charge through the "lighter" socket. Have for years. Car is hooked up now in fact. One feature this doesn't have is a desulfication cycle. This is a cycle that breaks down deposits that have formed on the plates and extends the life of the battery. Mostly more expensive units have such a cycle and, if they do, they mention it in their marketing literature.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I've heard tell that measuring the cam timings for variations can reveal a need to probe the IMS further. IIRC it is something discussed in Jake's class for mechanics in the internals of the M96. BTW, there is talk of a 2 day ~$500 class for owners/enthusiasts who want to understand the engine and the normal maintenance but not go into the level of detail an engine rebuilder goes into.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
