the way you check which generation of the IMS bearing you have is to look with the transmission detached from the engine. Once that is done, you have done about half the work of replacing if that is possible.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

4-5-6 are an interesting indication of potentially (or not) serious problems. Have the 6th cyl looked at via a bore scope. Pull the pan and look for pieces. Do not do a compression test or anything that requires rotation of the engine. Look at PMby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Those options may help you sell the car faster but the miles, color and transmission are liable to have more impact. Color being a personal choice, some wouldn't have a fill-in-the-blank color. Others want just that color. Some can't or don't want to drive a stick. Others wouldn't have a TIP. As to the aftermarket exhaust, its sound may appeal to some, not to others. None of the "upgrades" on yoby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
One you know the maintenance history. One you don't. You don't say what year the 911 is so can't tell what classic issues it might have. You already know what issues the '00 986 might suffer from. You say 60s (thats when I bought my 2) and you speak of college. All the household big ticket items paid off? Retirement secure? Long term care insurance paid for? Got a plan for insurance beyond medby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
There are several models branded by C-tec and Porsche. Mine (the cheap simple one) was fine for the 5 years I used it across 5 winters.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
The era of those of us who grew up driving a stick shift car and valuing the experience is passing. As is the era of gas powered cars, 6 cylinder Boxsters and even driving for pleasure. So think of how long you will drive this car and how much its value when you sell it means to you. Depreciation (the difference between initial cost and eventual selling price) was 90% of the cost to me of owniby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I'd think how YOU feel is more important. Drive them both. Consider price. Consider how it will be used. Then make your decision. Back when I was buying my first Boxster (second Porsche) i must have driven 8 different models of cars. Everything from a Jag to a 'vette to a BMW. Some as little as 2 blocks and I knew there was no fit between the car and me. And by fit, I don't mean physically. Moreby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Every time I go to configure it, Elon has moved the models available or the price. I really want the Model Y, the SUV version of the Model 3. Maybe available a year from now. Not sure how long we are going to be in this house which makes the charger investment problematic.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
in that most are owned as a second car I'd wager. I'm thinking about putting a deposit down on a EV. 180 miles in the time it takes me to make a pit stop is fine with me. 95% of my trips can be done easily with the 260 mile mid-range Model 3. Not cheap. But once you have driven one, you understand it's fun factor. And it is fun. Beats most Boxsters off the line with max torque at 1 RPM. Handlingby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I was advised to charge the battery, remove it from the car and let it stand at room temperature or thereabouts for 24 hours then test the voltage with a meter. Then use the following scale to determine if it is still good. It should read if a wet cell 12.6 volts or better after standing for twenty four hours. Note there is a difference between the meaning of the readings for fully charged for aby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

D-Chunk - the failure of the cylinder liner sleeve which fractures and a D-shaped piece separates from the end of the sleeve. It is thought to be made more probable by not allowing the car to thoroughly warm up to operating temperature before driving off. Sharp increases in this problem are reported in the cold months. It is least common in 3.2 litre engines.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
My notes from maybe 10 years ago said: 1. Porous Block - Early '97 engines had a "porous block" problem that generally massively failed within the first 10k. All are thought to have been replaced by now. The best description of this problem I know of is here. 2. Slipped Sleeve - Mid '98 thru early '99 engines had major internal engine slipped sleeve problems that would cause total engine failuby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

will leave most Porsches at the starting line, they are selling to the toy buyer. Since the EU is putting an emphasis on green, they appeal to a buyer who can see restrictions coming and wants to be prepared. Some of the warranty provisions, over the air updates for future proofing and we come to you service may appeal. from a horse, just a different kind. And if you have ever been to LA or Phoenix or Beijing you know pollution is real. I used to visit Phoenix in the 60s and 70s when it was a small attractive to live in town. Then a few years ago I drove into town only to see the city covered in a brown haze. PST2 and PWIS are diagnostic computers used by Porsche dealers and can read and set codes unique to Porsche subsystems. The PST2 is older and can be sometimes found used or at independent shops. IIRC, the PWIS is only rentable by a dealer. Durametric is a software/cable combination that attempts to mimic the PST2 and PWIS functions. It requires a Windows laptop. Comes in a 3 car version and an uby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

My wife's alarm clock just did 2 days ago. Slightly easier to replace though. If it was my problem, I'd look for itsnotanova/woody on the forums as he parts out Boxsters.
