for about a week after each of mine was done. No bending over, weight lifting restrictions, etc. Might check re driving a race car so soon. I had to turn down my computer monitor's brightness by about 60% after mine. You'll love em.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
And print out the relevant articles after doing your research if you want hard copy near where the car is to work on it? As one who gathered many insights from forum postings and attempted to put them into coherent articles, that process would be a full time job. And would guarantee burnout. The closest things in hardcopy are Bentley's, 101 Projects and the Porsche manuals. But I'm sure you knby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
And a bunch of places that specialize in Boxster wrecks listed here. A complete engine rebuild with all known weak areas addressed with thought to be better parts could run in the $20-30k range. Swapping in a trans is not the world's worst in Porsche repair costs though disappointing.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
It all depends on what the ICE engine is designed to do. An BMW i3 with a 3 cyl engine and maybe 4 gallons of gas and a 35 MPG ICE if far different from a Prius Plus (the plug in Prius) or the Porsche racecars. The Panorama Hybrid actually ended up in Motor Trend's top 6 sedans for 2018. Go look at its stats. The Boxster/Cayman didn't. (They tested the S and balked at the price and made the usby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
doesn't have engine or transmission failures at the age that most of these cars are getting to. Porsche is not alone and even the well reputed brands fail. I've had two major failures in the last 20 years, one engine, one transmission, both Japanese major units at under 100k miles. Be thankful yours failed in a safe place and a relatively cheap tow. My last major failure was 250 miles from homeby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
You have developed and productized several products for each of 3 variations. Maybe a dozen in all. The audience for such products is dwindling as more cars are taken off the road by accidents or fall into the hand of people who won't spend serious money maintaining them. Those who love their cars may have already replaced or decided not to. You have infrastructure costs (buildings, personnel,by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

The introduction of more models has to be stretching their talent thin. With a 200k+ order backlog, I'd think they need to be devoting resources to getting volume production into quality and profit targets. The roadster can be hand built. OTOH, rumor has it that they have now produced their first cars for ordinary consumers on the waiting list (multiple trailers have been seen leaving the planby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Typical Tesla. Want you to wait several years for an unknown quality car. Help finance the company with your deposit. If they can't even crank out 1000 Model 3s a month (a relatively simple car) or get their electronic nannies working on their current $100k cars, do you think the effort to produce the truck and roadster will contribute to the company's longevity or prove a fatal distraction?by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
From experience of a wreck that totaled my first Boxster. If it went down to 21F, imagine how cold the road got and how long it will take to warm up to air temperature. And that is assuming the sun reaches 100% of the surface. A simple thing like the shade of a tree can mean that stretch of road warms as much as a day later even assuming the next night's temps are warmer. Buy the ones with pigtails. If you don't want to do it, any muffler shop can, not unique to Porsche. Takes 15 minutes. Negotiate. List of part numbers here[/url towards the bottom (assuming we are talking 986).by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

And put it in the frunk when dry. When wet, hung it in the garage. Inch of ice, 10 inches of snow, driving rain; no sweat and never an issue with even condensation underneath once the cover was off . One man operation to put it on and off and I never considered it a real hassle. Even used it for weeks at a time with the battery maintainer stuck in the front passenger seat. Quotepatrick The future is hydrogen powered cars. Zero emissions. Zero green house effect. Electric cars are a stop gap and are not that environmentally friendly because the electricity is primarily generated from coal fueled power plants and depleted batteries are an environmental issue. The typical electric car battery is good for 300k miles and even then could be recycled. Repair is often aby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
that is available that I'd buy. But I've plotted the route from my electricity distribution panel to where in the garage the 240v would need to go and the next time an electrician is here, I'll ask him for a quote. I already own a hybrid and find it fun just for the technology. Does it handle like a Boxster. No. But can a Boxster handle the trip I'll take from NC to DC next Sunday taking all theby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
No punctures in the last 10 years. 3 or 4 cars at a time, maybe 2-10k miles per year each. The only punctures I can recall are from an off road excursion my wife took causing a sidewall rip and a parking lot effort on my part that failed to see a steel girder sticking out of a storm drain which likewise caused a sidewall rip. Another theory might be the wider the tire the more probability yourby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I'm reading CL and come across this P-car gem which I'm sure will not rival Marc's for longevity. A mere $500k new discounted to $260k with 17 more hours until the engine has to go back to the factor for a rebuild. Ah but the transmission has a mere hour on it. Read it and appreciate the reliability of the car you have.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
as doing so also allows the availability of some marginally profitable low volume cars like the Boxsters/Caymans. Or continuing to produce/make-available parts for 50 year old cars. High volume manufacturers would kill off models with so few sales as unprofitable. Or not develop significant updates to them. I own one of those.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

Thanks SteveJ. My nearest Lexus and Mazda and Mercedes and Porsche dealers are 40 miles away. Part of the reason my Boxster was sold. Toyota and Honda are maybe 4 miles away and will drive me back home. So even on my once yearly service the proximity factor rates a plus. Most of the time it is just me. Sometimes 4, seldom 5. go to the Lexus as opposed to the RX4? Or even the new Honda CRV which has gotten great reviews? Mazda CX-5 as the drivers SUV? I'm considering the RX4h hybrid. Money isn't the big consideration for me (8k miles/year) but I've gotten used to higher MPG cars and their infrequent fill ups so I'm interested in someone else's thought processes. Also the availability of dealer services in the manufactby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
There must be hundreds lying around in 986/996 wrecks. Look here for a list of places to look. Or on some of the P-car forums there is a guy called Woody that has a wonderful reputation.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I follow a UK forum and it seems that Boxster build dates are 4 months out while Cayman are into next year. Could availability have something to do with the sales figures? Factory moving from one location to another?by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
It will limit the enthusiasm of some potential buyers or attract just the one who wants it. My guess is a newer car will attract the older buyer less interested while the older car priced less attracts someone younger more eager for the sound. I attributed the total lack of tickets while driving my Boxsters to stealth color (AS) and stock muffler.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Or that there is a randomness in the universe. (Not that I didn't overmaintain my Boxsters too. I think it helps. But can it overcome randomness, build tolerance variations, etc? Nah.)by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
the same can be said. Used to have a 17 years ago SUV. Took a test drive last week in the current equivalent. Huge, ponderous, complex. The 986 wasn't that far off of the 30 year prior sports cars I had. But then I noticed I fit better in the larger cabins of later models.
