My 20 years with my 986...or how did I get involved in this mess?

I used to work in media. One of the perks some of our writers had were loaner cars to test drive and hopefully write about. In 2001 those nice folks at Porsche Canada offered me a Porsche for a week just to enjoy. I wasn't a writer but my interest in sports cars and racing was widely known. They were just being nice to me. They delivered a Zenith blue Boxster to my office. I drove it home and couldn't stop smiling for the entire time I had it. That was it, I had to have a Boxster.I offered to buy the press car from Porsche but they declined. Boxsters were hard to come by in 2001 with a long wait list and cars being sold above list price. I couldn't wait and found a mint 2001 Speed yellow fellow near Toronto.
My Porsche journey had begun. The car drove, handled and communicated better than any car I had owned. It was fabulous and I couldn't get enough of the Boxster knowledge and mystic. I found an on line forum Porsche Petes Boxster Board (PPBB) and became hooked. Hooked on the knowledge , enthusiasm and welcome offerings of suggestion and support from owners, lurkers and waiters. The forum was vibrant and super active and evolving.
I had my bumperettes sent from Toronto to Bumper Plugs to be painted. A forum member from California sent a spare side vent to me. I had a tonneau ordered from Suncoast in Sarasota. I had door sill guards from a forum member. I also had a PPBB shirt and hat. I couldn't get enough and fully enjoyed being immersed in the passion from forum members.
Of course when Chuck had had enough things went sideways for a while until Pedro came to the rescue and thank goodness he did. I don't post very often anymore but I do read the posts and get an idea of whats going on. I still to this day struggle to post pics.
My lovely speed yellow 986 is still fabulous. Driven only 62,000 kms it is in pristine condition. I have tracked the car at Mosport, Shannonville and Mt Tremblant. tried AutoX too. I only drive it in nice weather with the top down. I have had virtually no issues whatsoever with my car through almost 20 years of ownership. Just tires, routine maintenance and very frequent oil changes. It still gets thumbs up and admiring looks from other drivers, amazes me.
So Pedro, admin folks and forum members , thank you for making my journey a memorable one.
Thanks Pedro, now where's my hat??

A whole new world!

Track days. AutoX. Wow. This is legal? I had no idea these types of events were available to "ordinary people." I started Autocrossing with the local PCA group in 1998. I believe it was Nov '98 when a group of Boxster folks signed up for a DE event at Thunderhill Raceway in Northern California.

So. Much. To. Learn!

I learned a ton. Great info from around the world thanks to the forums, but nothing like DOING IT, and learning from great people. I had/have no particular skill...just a casual interest to learn lots. Even that casual/fun level was addicting. And expensive. And time consuming. My participation ramped up quickly, but I couldn't get my family interested in participating, so it gradually wound down over the next 5 years, or so. My wife did one DE event and had fun, but no interest in making it a regular thing. Same with Autocross. I'm on pace to participate in 1 autoX every few years. Need to do more.

Lots of great people involved in these types of events. Lots of friendships developed. And lots of remote support from the forums.

"Yes sir. I'm sorry sir." - one of the best lines that I learned at the track...for when you are summoned to speak with the steward. This same line has proven to work well when you are having an involuntary conversation on the side of the road with a police officer. Fingers crossed. Knock on wood. Etc...

Used to attract bees whenever I washed it or waxed it. Attracted other attention, too. Wife and I drove it up to VT for a long, summer weekend once. Cruising on some nice back roads, top down and music playing, just enjoying the day. We were in a valley where the speed limit was 55, which I was actually doing. I notice a cop car coming from the other direction, no worries, except as he gets closer, he flashes his lights, sticks his arm out the window and give a pushing down motion. Can only assume he figured I was speeding. Gave a short buzz kill, but the day was too beautiful for it to last too long. Now, if he only saw me the day before on a newly paved part of interstate, that would have been a different story. Speed Yellow does rock. Probably drew more gas station conversations than my other two Porsches.

Ugh. The plugs look great though Eric!

Got me thinking about the early days of PPBB. Who remembers Dr. Dane's plugs? The dentist who molded them out of dental mold goo. I think I have the name and material correct. I had a set and stored them away after my repaint (and bumper hole patch) in '99. I'm sure I threw them away a decade ago.
My long journey to Porsche ownership

I'm fairly new to Porsche ownership, but my experience with the brand goes back to my childhood. I'm a California ex-pat, part of a Ligurian fishing family from Santa Cruz. Sometime in the 50's I was at a family funeral when I overheard my uncles talking about one of their cousins who had this Porsche and was having problems with it because it had this temperamental crankshaft. At the time I was clueless but later learned it was an early Carrera 4-cam. But the seed was planted. I started to notice 356's around town and while I was working for my uncles, who had the Lincoln-Mercury dealership in town, got to drive a 1965 356SC convertible that belonged to a local radiologist who took the car to the dealership regularly to get it washed and detailed. Living on the Central Coast I was into sailing and the races at Laguna Seca where Porsches were the giant killers. In early 1965 I drove to Wester Porsche in Monterey to look at what had to be one of the first 911s in the US. Over the years I was always in a circle of friends with Porsches. A grammar school classmate, Bill Doyle, became one of the leading 4-cam experts in the world (he sadly passed away a couple years ago). My first cousin, the son of one of my car dealer uncles, has always been a serious Porsche enthusiast, racing them, restoring them and selling them. He even managed to get the 959 certified in the US after many years of effort.

I did take a detour into the Mercedes world over the years. My father was a sea captain who was always impressed by the Mercedes he saw around the world. In late 1963 he owned Islander, a sailboat built in Germany that won the1963 Traspac race on corrected time, which was fitted with the Mercedes OM636 diesel - the ubiquitous 36hp engine found in boats, 180Ds and ThermoKing Nose-Mount refrigerated trailers. That engine set me off on on a Mercedes journey that lasts to this day - this year marks the start of my 49th year as a MBCA member! I've owned nine M-Bs over the years including a show winning 250SL we kept for 36 years. But there were constant brushes with Porsche ownership. I can't remember how many I looked at, drove, tried to buy over the years. Then the Boxster came out. Then I got serious. I started following PPBD religiously. I almost traded the SL to a local PCA member who had a Speed Yellow 2001 Boxster S - but he didn't want to put up enough cash to make the deal work. I visited dealers in every city on the East Coast. But I never committed. Then the 981 came out. Then my youngest son bought a 2014 Sapphire Blue Cayman. Then I got really serious!!! We found our 2014 Sapphire Blue Boxster S at Porsche Fairfield in Connecticut. Picked it up December 29, 2014 and drove home to SE Virginia between snowstorms. Joined First Settlers Region PCA as soon as I had the VIN. After a year I was elected to the FSR board as Activities Officer. It was great 4 years, but I stepped down at the end of 2019 to pay more attention to my business in California. We've taken a lot of road trips in the Boxster - the longest was a 2600 mile journey to Fallingwater in SW Pennsylvania, then through the Finger Lakes, on to Montreal, down to Jay Peak, VT, on to Quebec City, then to Stowe, VT, then to Manhattan and home. Almost exclusively country roads with the top down. We attended Treffen Asheville. I've done a few DEs - all at VIR - which is a great track in the Boxster. I can't count how many Fun Runs, etc. we've done. We really enjoy the car and could own it as long as we had the SL - if we live that long:-)

Even though I'm not very active here I follow it every day. I was really sad when PPBB started to wind down, but I truly appreciate the fact the Pedro stepped up (and I follow every tech question he answers in the Panorama). And many thanks to those who support him keeping the site working. Thanks to all.

The day we picked up the Boxster at Porsche Fairfield - sorry about the background.

<div id="div_3f1efcbaa29b5fa136ab7e8c92b65fde"

What a ride!

This trip began over 20 years ago. It was 1999 and I was looking to get a new car fun car and 4 different manufactures had contenders, BMW, Honda, Audi, and Porsche. I read all of the reviews, and got the opinions of all of my friends and family, regardless if I asked or not. I even had a friend tell me if I got that car I could not drive everyone to lunch. I looked at him quizzically and said I’m not buying a car to take you to lunch.

I was never a big Porsche fan (yeah that was going to change), and all four on paper had their pluses and minuses. The Audi TT was front wheel drive so that was out. For me this was a big decision and i wanted to make sure this was the car I really wanted. I really wanted to drive them to get a good feel how the car drove. I wanted something more than the 5 minute test drive from a dealer who would be talking to me the whole time, and then I realized I live in LA and I can rent them and get a weekend test drive.
Well, it was a good idea at the time but they didn't have the Porsche or the Honda at the rental places. After test driving or renting all of the cars I chose the Boxster S. It was the only one that checked all of the boxes, and I ordered an '01 SYS. I got it in December of 2000, Merry Christmas to me lol, so this month my car is 20 years old!
During this time I also found Porsche Pete's and that where I met a lot of great people. We used to meet up and go on drives. It was a great time. 1 year I went to the Las Vegas get together and that was a lot of fun too. My wife and I would go driving every weekend up in the mountains or down at the beach and it was a blast. There is nothing better when the only thing on your mind is a beautiful day with the top down on a curvy road. I also started go to track days/weekends and it made me realize I'm not that good of a driver. It also led me down a dark road.

The road where you spend most of your time and money looking for how you can make your car go faster and handle better. I already got the car with the M030 suspension upgrade, but I can get adjustable coil overs and my car and it will handle even better? Is that even possible? When can I get it and how fast can I get it installed? I also went to a car meet and Borla was there and I spoke to one of the Borla's and he said I would get a free Borla if they could use my car as a prototype. Where do I sign up? The muffler was great, at first, but then after some time it would reverberate inside the cabin around 3000 rpm, not good.

I used it for a while but then switched back to stock if I still wanted my anvil and hammer. It sounded great at higher rpms though. I have done a few other modifications, but through all these years I still can't wait till the weekend in the twisties. It always brings a smile to my face. Thank you Pedro for continuing our community of great people and great cars, and the trip down memory lane

While technically not the first year, my gremlin report certainly qualifies my car as an early build. :( These forums have helped to share information about the cars, and troubles, in an all new way. Without the help of the people contributing to these forums, my Boxster ownership experience would have been more expensive and less fun. From memory, here's a list of gremlins and a few maintenance items that I can recall...pretty much everything known except drivetrain-related issues, which I consider to be lucky. :)

Airbag light
Broken top cable/stretched sheath resulting in one side not operating
Bad top microswitch
Airbag light
New coolant cap
New coolant cap
New fuel cap (i think)
Bad hand brake microswitch
AOS
Inside door pull disconnected
Airbag light
Dead horn
Coolant expansion tank
Horn honking while braking
Ignition switch
Bad hand brake microswitch
Turn signal stalk not cancelling
Cracked rear window
Bad top microswitch
AOS
Coolant expansion tank
Radiator fan

Maintenance:
Clutch
Water pump, belt
Brakes
Trunk struts
Motor mount
Motor mount
Serp belt
Thermostat
MAF
Vanity mirror visor tension :)
Plugs, tubes, coils
Batteries
Wheel bearings, CV boots, struts

No problem here:
IMS
RMS
Slipped sleeve

What did I miss?

Pay attention, dammit!

Right after I picked up the car, I started pestering Porsche about the availability of the passenger airbag deactivation bar. I can't recall when it actually became available, but I finally got it (guessing after 6-9 months...late '98) and a Porsche booster seat. No need for the Porsche-specific seat, but it worked well. Then I started driving my 3 year old to/from day care a few times a week.

One day after work, almost home, stopped in a wide lane waiting for oncoming traffic to clear to make a left turn, BAM. Simple traffic situation, good conditions...just simply wasn't paying attention...the young person drove into my rear end. Just. Didn't. See. Me. Didn't slow down at all. Slow motion as I saw the car coming up fast. I can't recall what exactly I did, but I had the clutch in and got knocked ahead 50+ feet and rolled to the shoulder. I bounced back and hit the roll bar pretty hard. I'm sure I had a concussion, but had a hot poker game to get to so skipped the ride in the ambulance. The Cadillac didn't look as bad as my car, and the two girls were ok. I learned that the new driver was in her mom's Cadillac because she had just wrecked her car the week prior.

I tried to be kind at the scene, but I was hurting. And I was crushed. My baby. Right after I was hit, it hit me that often I'd be in that exact spot with my 3yo son in the car. I was simply so happy that he wasn't with me that day that the rest was a nit. I think I maintained relatively good composure.

The repair process was loooooong. 3-4 months, mostly waiting for parts. But the car was repaired well. I kicked in some cash and had the entire car repainted to repair some front end paint damage after a tire scrap hit the hood. I was confident in the quality of the repair, and the paint job was very good. The clear coat was THICK, so I can still polish the hell out of it and 20 years later it looks great.

After the accident, my level of defensive driving went into overdrive. When others were with me, even more so. I have my lights on 100% of the time. I hate sitting in traffic anywhere. I leave lots of space ahead to maneuver. I watch my mirrors. I look both ways, twice, before pulling through a green light. I have the car in gear, or ready to go in gear quickly. Don't drive in blind spots or next to others. Don't let others do that to me. So if I'm driving fast, it's just defensive positioning. :) The younger sister to my 986 is BRIGHT FRIGGIN BLUE with PSE always engaged...all in an effort to let people know that my little ol' car is near.

Lots of great memories driving my kids around in the car through the years. One of my favorite memories was dropping my son off at school. Top down, having pulled over at the curb, a bird bombed my son and hit him on the head with a significant load. It took us a few seconds to figure out what happened, then we both started cracking up. Good times.

What do these stories have to do with 10 years of Pedros Board? Just reliving the stories that were shared over the years with others. The PEOPLE on this forum have been a great addition to the Boxster ownership experience, and all of the fun and frustration that may come with it.

Joy rides!

A few pics in the gallery...

I've probably had >100 people drive my car...my kids learning to drive a stick, family, friends, PCA events, even had my neighbor take it to prom. I've probably also given >100 rides to others who weren't comfortable or couldn't drive it. I really enjoy sharing the excitement.

I remember giving my 90+ year old grandma a ride shortly before she passed away. She and my grandpa were the original owners of the Karmann Ghia that I grew up driving, so it was fun to share stories and compare the two cars. I can still picture it...after our top down drive around the block, she attempted to straighten her hair and simply said, "woooooooo." :) (My ride had nothing to do with her passing!)

I've been fortunate the other way around too, having driven 911s, Lotus, McLaren 570S, Maserati, and, of course, the Carrera GT! Did I tell you that I drove a Carrera GT? :D

Enjoy the ride!
