My long journey to Porsche ownership (no replies)

I'm fairly new to Porsche ownership, but my experience with the brand goes back to my childhood. I'm a California ex-pat, part of a Ligurian fishing family from Santa Cruz. Sometime in the 50's I was at a family funeral when I overheard my uncles talking about one of their cousins who had this Porsche and was having problems with it because it had this temperamental crankshaft. At the time I was clueless but later learned it was an early Carrera 4-cam. But the seed was planted. I started to notice 356's around town and while I was working for my uncles, who had the Lincoln-Mercury dealership in town, got to drive a 1965 356SC convertible that belonged to a local radiologist who took the car to the dealership regularly to get it washed and detailed. Living on the Central Coast I was into sailing and the races at Laguna Seca where Porsches were the giant killers. In early 1965 I drove to Wester Porsche in Monterey to look at what had to be one of the first 911s in the US. Over the years I was always in a circle of friends with Porsches. A grammar school classmate, Bill Doyle, became one of the leading 4-cam experts in the world (he sadly passed away a couple years ago). My first cousin, the son of one of my car dealer uncles, has always been a serious Porsche enthusiast, racing them, restoring them and selling them. He even managed to get the 959 certified in the US after many years of effort.

I did take a detour into the Mercedes world over the years. My father was a sea captain who was always impressed by the Mercedes he saw around the world. In late 1963 he owned Islander, a sailboat built in Germany that won the1963 Traspac race on corrected time, which was fitted with the Mercedes OM636 diesel - the ubiquitous 36hp engine found in boats, 180Ds and ThermoKing Nose-Mount refrigerated trailers. That engine set me off on on a Mercedes journey that lasts to this day - this year marks the start of my 49th year as a MBCA member! I've owned nine M-Bs over the years including a show winning 250SL we kept for 36 years. But there were constant brushes with Porsche ownership. I can't remember how many I looked at, drove, tried to buy over the years. Then the Boxster came out. Then I got serious. I started following PPBD religiously. I almost traded the SL to a local PCA member who had a Speed Yellow 2001 Boxster S - but he didn't want to put up enough cash to make the deal work. I visited dealers in every city on the East Coast. But I never committed. Then the 981 came out. Then my youngest son bought a 2014 Sapphire Blue Cayman. Then I got really serious!!! We found our 2014 Sapphire Blue Boxster S at Porsche Fairfield in Connecticut. Picked it up December 29, 2014 and drove home to SE Virginia between snowstorms. Joined First Settlers Region PCA as soon as I had the VIN. After a year I was elected to the FSR board as Activities Officer. It was great 4 years, but I stepped down at the end of 2019 to pay more attention to my business in California. We've taken a lot of road trips in the Boxster - the longest was a 2600 mile journey to Fallingwater in SW Pennsylvania, then through the Finger Lakes, on to Montreal, down to Jay Peak, VT, on to Quebec City, then to Stowe, VT, then to Manhattan and home. Almost exclusively country roads with the top down. We attended Treffen Asheville. I've done a few DEs - all at VIR - which is a great track in the Boxster. I can't count how many Fun Runs, etc. we've done. We really enjoy the car and could own it as long as we had the SL - if we live that long:-)

Even though I'm not very active here I follow it every day. I was really sad when PPBB started to wind down, but I truly appreciate the fact the Pedro stepped up (and I follow every tech question he answers in the Panorama). And many thanks to those who support him keeping the site working. Thanks to all.

The day we picked up the Boxster at Porsche Fairfield - sorry about the background.

<div id="div_341308e4a820d56bdef6109a64fd9a69"

What a ride! (3 replies)

This trip began over 20 years ago. It was 1999 and I was looking to get a new car fun car and 4 different manufactures had contenders, BMW, Honda, Audi, and Porsche. I read all of the reviews, and got the opinions of all of my friends and family, regardless if I asked or not. I even had a friend tell me if I got that car I could not drive everyone to lunch. I looked at him quizzically and said I’m not buying a car to take you to lunch.

I was never a big Porsche fan (yeah that was going to change), and all four on paper had their pluses and minuses. The Audi TT was front wheel drive so that was out. For me this was a big decision and i wanted to make sure this was the car I really wanted. I really wanted to drive them to get a good feel how the car drove. I wanted something more than the 5 minute test drive from a dealer who would be talking to me the whole time, and then I realized I live in LA and I can rent them and get a weekend test drive.
Well, it was a good idea at the time but they didn't have the Porsche or the Honda at the rental places. After test driving or renting all of the cars I chose the Boxster S. It was the only one that checked all of the boxes, and I ordered an '01 SYS. I got it in December of 2000, Merry Christmas to me lol, so this month my car is 20 years old!
During this time I also found Porsche Pete's and that where I met a lot of great people. We used to meet up and go on drives. It was a great time. 1 year I went to the Las Vegas get together and that was a lot of fun too. My wife and I would go driving every weekend up in the mountains or down at the beach and it was a blast. There is nothing better when the only thing on your mind is a beautiful day with the top down on a curvy road. I also started go to track days/weekends and it made me realize I'm not that good of a driver. It also led me down a dark road.

The road where you spend most of your time and money looking for how you can make your car go faster and handle better. I already got the car with the M030 suspension upgrade, but I can get adjustable coil overs and my car and it will handle even better? Is that even possible? When can I get it and how fast can I get it installed? I also went to a car meet and Borla was there and I spoke to one of the Borla's and he said I would get a free Borla if they could use my car as a prototype. Where do I sign up? The muffler was great, at first, but then after some time it would reverberate inside the cabin around 3000 rpm, not good.

I used it for a while but then switched back to stock if I still wanted my anvil and hammer. It sounded great at higher rpms though. I have done a few other modifications, but through all these years I still can't wait till the weekend in the twisties. It always brings a smile to my face. Thank you Pedro for continuing our community of great people and great cars, and the trip down memory lane

My Boxster story. (1 reply)

I have always been a sports car enthusiast and fan. I admired a friend’s early 924. I got to drive a 928 to the market once. A car pool friend owned a 914 that he drove to work. He let me once drive it on our way back home on a twisty residential road around the Rose Bowl. That hooked me on Porsche.

My first sports car was a 1971 240Z. I put over 200,000 miles on it before I grew tired of it. A friend & I rebuilt and tricked out the motor on it, including dual side draft Weber carburetors. It ran pretty good, but I soon wanted a car that was a true performer right out of the factory. So, I sold it to Nissan buyer for the factory buy-back program. I regret that decision.

Next up was a 3000 GT (not the VR4). A quick and good handling car. But again, not a Porsche.

I worked for a high rise construction company in Downtown LA and my supervisor had a 1971 orange 911 S. He rarely drove it to the construction sites. Now I realize why. I hope he still has it.

My introduction to the Boxster was at a family beach party. My cousin had a 1999 silver with red interior Boxster. She let me drive it around the Bolsa Chica parking lot. I was sold. I started to read more about the Boxster. The consensus then was that it was a fantastic car, but a bit underpowered.
It just so happens that the next Orange County Auto Show had the Boxster S premiere. They had this in shimmering black rotating around on an elevated platform. I spent the next hour admiring it while it went round and round. That started an earnest search to get one. I read every car magazine about the features of this more powerful model.

Next step was to get an allocation. There are lots of dealers in So Cal, but few had an allocation for the build. Those that did required a deposit. In the process I test drove a few base ’99 Boxsters, since the S was not produced yet. One test drive ended up on a flat bed, as the cooling system took a dump on the freeway. I placed my allocation at Circle Porsche in Long Beach shortly thereafter. I got only a few of the pricey options. My build was an Ocean Blue S, graphite grey interior, 6 speed. I was totally amazed when I picked her up at the dealership. Stunning color sitting in that showroom. I was afraid to drive it home, for fear of being car jacked. She turned heads every time I drove around town. I still get compliments to this day.

I learned about Porsche Pete’s Boxster Board during the build wait. I joined PCA OCR shortly after delivery. A bunch of other new Boxster owners joined OCR too. We would sit together at the monthly breakfast and take a drive afterwards. Some of the gang included Craig, Jeanine, Jamey, Chris, Rick Johnson, Rick B., Richard K., Joanne, Kirk & Kristy, Dave M. and Jose. I also learned about Robert's Malibu Canyon runs from PPBB. That went on monthly for a few years. I learned to drive twisties better by doing these runs. Just don’t go for fried food shortly thereafter as a few drivers did.

Those first few years I was all in. TBHL, West Coast Boxsterfest, joining up with fellow PPBBers for a trip to Yellowstone, driving top down whenever possible, chatting with and meeting the Babblers, PCA tech sessions, meeting Porsche enthusiasts from around the world (Frogster and others) and a Porsche factory tour while in Europe. I even attended a 2 day Porsche Driving Experience in Road Atlanta (I met a few Atlanta PPBBers there too). Got driving instruction from Doc Bundy and Hurley Haywood.

I met a lot of good people in the process of ownership and board conversations. Although the monthly drive gatherings and PCA OCR breakfasts have vanished (many sold their cars, moved, married, etc.), I value that special time we had together. I now hang out with the PCA Grand Prix group (Long Beach). I often take her up the California coast when I head up to the Monterey car week. Top down all the way!! This car and the convertible experience are amazing. I recently had to spend a lot to keep her going. Now she runs amazing again. I hope to keep this car as long as I am able. My neighbor wants me to leave it to her from my estate. I bet she would appreciate it. I took her on a drive once. Quite an impression.

I am thankful that Pedro and all have kept Pedro’s Board running, so that we can all share our friendship, experiences and car maintenance. PPBB and Pedro’s Board experiences has enriched my life. To another 10 years and more!

Taking delivery, and The Road (no replies)

I'd ordered my 13 Boxster S early in 2012, pretty much as soon as the configurator went live. Mine came in to the dealer a couple weeks before the U.S. release for the model, so I had to wait for June 28, 2012 to take delivery. The dealer had a release party for the new Boxsters, and after taking care of the paperwork, guests started showing up. My car was parked right in front of the show room, and at one point I saw a happy couple sitting in it, thinking it was a demo. I didn't get alarmed, but as a precaution, my sales guy put a SOLD sign on it.
After a couple thousand miles I had the oil changed and in September hit the road. 8500 miles later I was home, after traveling to all the remaining states in the lower 48 I hadn't been in yet, visiting friends and relatives, and seeing some achingly gorgeous places.
After about 40,000 miles I noticed the engine sound changing; getting deeper and more characteristic of the water-cooled naturally aspirated six. I don't know if this progression has plateaued, but at around 83,000 miles it's got all the beautiful growls, howls, and whirs I could ask for.
I keep thinking what I really need in life is no house, just a tank of gas, a credit card, and a post office box somewhere in the old geographic center of the country.
The ever-approaching Horizon and its Possibilities.
A peculiar sort of epicurean notion, eh?

my boxster story (2 replies)

i have always had a love for porsches. i prefer the understated looks over the more, dare i say vulgar looks of the other brand with a prancing horse. i've always liked the david and goliath story of porsche in racing. my emotional attraction to porsche race cars is extremely strong and i love mid-engined cars.

when i was of driving age my dream car was the 930. i bought a '74 914 2.0 somewhere around 1980. i loved that car. i must have kept my guardian angels busy though as i did things in that car that make me shudder today.

in '93 or '94, porsche had the boxster concept at the geneva motor show. when i saw it, i had to pick my jaw up off the floor. it was a mid-engined porsche and it looked amazing.
then in the late '90s, i was in LA visiting friends. I went down to the local supermarket in malibu and there was a raffle for a white boxster. i think they must have had to wipe that thing off since i drooled all over it. tickets were $100 so i didn't buy one.
fast forward to june 2000. it was time to make my dream a reality. I went to the dealer and they had just gotten in an MY2000 ocean blue boxster S. it had just been rolled off the truck and still had all its wrapping on it. i bought it right then and there.
we had nearly 10 wonderful years with that car. we drove it all through switzerland, france, italy, spain, and of course its motherland; germany.
but alas, we decided to move to vancouver and the canadian government, in all of its wisdom, allows rust bucket, oil-spewing jalopies to drive on the streets but does not allow you to bring in a perfectly good and safe porsche from another country because they don't meet canadian safety standards. but you can bring it in if it's 15+ years old because the older, the safer, right?
i sold it to a friend who still has it today and has recently told me that he needs to get rid of it. it just celebrated its 20th birthday and doesn't quite have 100k km on it. so if anyone wants a great car in switzerland, let me know.

<div id="div_14e52f4f89912ad6c74aab638333c1b7"

Re: Today we celebrate the 10 year Anniversary of PedrosBoard! (no replies)

- What Porsche first caught your eye?
Probably a Le mans racer back in the 70's.
- What was your first drive in a Porsche like?
Some thirty years ago, I was visiting Calgary for work and I was given an opportunity to drive a red 911 ('70's vintage?) at lunch. I still remember well the acceleration, the sound and the ear to ear grin that I had for the rest of that afternoon!
- Have you done any special drives / trips in your Porsche?
Our longest adventure was driving to the 2015 PCA Parade in Indiana from Montreal. That was a great trip as we were able to visit lots of friends in Indianapolis and the Parade resort was excellent! The Parade will be held there again in 2021 so check it out if you can.
- What do you like best about your Porsche?
Style, colour, sound and a rock solid build ... car still going strong after 17 years of ownership. I'm even still chopping the original plastic window despite never having used a diaper to polish it. Some PPBB'ers might remember those instructions. So much fun to drive. I also like that I'm part of the global Porsche fan club. Maybe one day I'll manage a Euro delivery of a new one! Maybe there's an electric Boxster in my future?!
- How many Porsches have you had?
Our 1999 Forest Green Metalic Boxster was a one owner, ex lease car that we bought in Chicago back in 2004 while we were living in Indianapolis. It's the only Porsche I've ever owned. Seven years later, we returned to Montreal with the car. The car has been part of the family all these years, can't imagine it not being in the garage. It's in hibernation now for 6 months which makes our short driving season all the sweeter!

Thanks Pedro. Looking forward to the next 10 years. I'll toast our good fortune with a nice single malt later this evening!

<div id="div_c13f931ea4995ae6859dec6ac9223352"

Re: X( Get Ready for a Special PedrosBoard Celebration X( (no replies)

<div id="div_83ef63030ae72854715054c6165cb781"

Re: Today we celebrate the 10 year Anniversary of PedrosBoard! (no replies)

Happy Anniversary. I found this Board before it was Pedros, back in early spring of 1998 when looking to buy a Boxster, which was my first Porsche (1998 Arena Red, Savanna beige, only mod was buying a wood shifter). Got me through the 6-month wait. Been a two-seater fan my whole life. Brought the Boxster with no test drive, as you couldn't back then because they sold every single one made to meet demand. Remember sitting in it for the first time after signing all the paperwork and it was like slipping on your favorite pair of jeans. Felt so natural.

-What Porsche first caught your eye? Green 914 when in grade school (early 70s). Didn't care that the other kids dissed it for being a VW (4 cylinder VW engine). It and a sky blue TR6 lived in our neighborhood. Remember watching them when clearing the street during street hockey and other games we played: "CAAAARRRRR!" Ah, being a kid in the early 70s.

- What was your first drive in a Porsche like? Not until I brought my '98. Lived in DC and brought it from a Wallingford, CT dealer (shorter wait). Took the AmTrak up. Drove it through the hills of western CT before hitting the highway to come back home). Made me feel like I didn't have a care in the world.

- Have you done any special drives / trips in your Porsche? On my 3rd Porsche and they've all been working cars, not garage queens. Been driven up along the Maine coast, VT mountains, Chicago for Cubs playoff games, numerous trips to see college football games to meet up with friends, and concerts out of state with friends and families, etc. If you've never done it, tailgating in a Porsche sports car is great, unless you don't like strangers wondering up to talk with you while you sit around drinking beer and listening to music. Nobody has ever messed with it (knock on wood). My commute to work is only 4 miles, garage to garage, so don't rack up too many miles, which means roadtrips don't pile the miles on.

- What do you like best about your Porsche? After having one in my garage for 22 years now, basically the same thing, the feeling it gives turning the key with your left hand and hearing the engine come to life. You know even a simple trip to the grocery store is going to be anything but ordinary.

- How many Porsches have you had? Three: 1998 Arena Red/Savanna Beige/black Boxster (no S's at that time); 2002 Speed Yellow/black/black Boxster S; and 2009 Aqua Blue/Grey/black Carrera S Cab, which is still in my garage.

Thank you, Pedro, for keeping the Board alive and thriving these past 10 years!

//

One day I had the Karmann Ghia into the local VW/Porsche dealer for an oil change. While waiting, I walked into the showroom. There, sitting on the floor, was a brand new beautiful silver 911 Targa with a whopping (for 1969) $23,500 price tag. I believe it was closing time that the staff finally had to drag me out of that car. From that day on, it was my dream to own a silver Targa. Whenever I was lucky enough to be sitting at a light with a Porsche beside me, I'd always roll down my window and hope the driver was on his way to a hot date. I wanted to hear that flat six when the light turned green.

Over the years, for one reason or another, I was never able to make the dream come true.

Then in January of 1993, at the Detroit Auto show, Porsche pulled the wraps off their newest concept. There it was, a drop dead gorgeous silver roadster. The Boxster Concept. It was silver just like the very first Porsche. My jaw dropped. OMG! Porsche actually designed a car more beautiful than a 911. The engine was in the middle, where Ferdinand Porsche had placed it in his very first car, the 356-001, to achieve the ultimate in balance. In that split second, my dream changed. I lusted after one of these fabulous looking roadsters. I really, really wanted a silver Boxster. Soon I had one - a model of the concept, sitting on my desk, where it still sits today.

The Boxster Concept at the Porsche Museum.

<div id="div_e6da252348a18d580e74f8819cb07ec4"

//

Porsche spent a month building up the suspense at the introduction of Boxster in 1996. It started with a pair of headlights in the distance. Every day I checked into the Porsche website, the lights came closer. And, after 30 days, there it was. Wow! It was now here in the metal. The Porsche Boxster.

It still took a few years, but in 2006, I was finally able to make the dream come true. I was actually able to do more than just look. It was time to buy a Boxster. I've loved driving all my life. This was going to be special. The only two options it HAD TO HAVE, were, silver paint and a manual transmission. There were a few Boxsters either in stock or on route to the dealer that fit the description, all with a longer list of options. I finally settled on one that would arrive at the dealers in a couple of weeks.

When it arrived at the beginning of March, I made the 60 mile drive to the dealer to have my first look. OH MY, what a gorgeous looking car! I arranged to have the dealer store it until the beginning of April. No way did I want to drive my Boxster while there was salt and slush on the roads. Every weekend in March, I drove to the dealer to bond with my car. I'm positive that March 2006 had over 100 days.

I started to wonder if, in my mind, I'd blown the capabilities of this car out of proportion. April 1st came (I couldn't sleep the whole night before). It was time. I had arranged with the dealer that they pick up my wife and me so we could savour the first drive in the Boxster together. My shaking hands had trouble signing the papers. FINALLY all the paperwork was done and the salesman was done going over the controls and features with me. My dream was coming true.
It was a chilly day with a stiff breeze right from the North Pole. I looked at my wife and asked if she'd mind if we put the top down for at least the first part of the drive. Her reply: "Well it IS a convertible!" Despite the 35 degree temperature, that was an incredible drive home.

From the first twist of the key with my left hand, my love of the Boxster did nothing but continue to grow. Every time I slide behind the wheel, I marvel at how everything is just where it's supposed to be for the maximum driving experience. The seats, comfortable, but firm enough to easily drive stretches of 500 or more miles per day. The shifter - right there were it belongs. The seating and pedal position are as if the designers at Porsche asked me where I wanted them and that's where they put them. It's like slipping on my favourite pair of sneakers and I'm ready to walk, dance, run, drive or whatever else I feel like doing. And, it can all be done to the intoxicating sound of the Symphony in Flat Six. It has always exceeded my expectations. I wanted to keep this car forever.

It was perfect for everything from short fun drives.

<div id="div_242b58688cc56eba39d8b8a0dfdaccb3"

//

Alas. Things change. It seems that, what to me, is an integral part of my driving enjoyment is disappearing at a frightening rate. Automatics, including PDK, are taking over. PDK, which admittedly is a fabulous piece of engineering, is being chosen for various reasons: need an extra couple of tenths at the track, too much shifting in stop and go traffic, don't have the co-ordination to shift and people even say that they're just too lazy to shift. All valid reasons to purchase PDK. Fewer and fewer people want the driving involvement that a manual provides. Without a manual, I know I can't achieve what I call the Zen of driving.

Then came the rumours that the fabulous flat six, heart and soul of the Boxster, would be replaced by a turbo charged four cylinder. No longer would I have the involvement of shifting, becoming one with the car to dance through the curves to the sound of the Symphony in Flat Six.

So, what would happen if I did want to get a new Boxster in the future when a manual and flat six no longer were options?

After some long soul searching, I decided to custom order a new Boxster to hopefully see me a long way down the road. After close to a year of wearing out the Porsche configurator, testing cars with various options and thanks to a few people here on Pedro’s Board, who gave me input and patiently answered my questions to help in my decision making. People like Roger in PEI, Laz, MikenOH and of course Pedro. I'd finally come up with what for me, is the ultimate Porsche.

In mid May, I placed my order for a 2014 BoxsterS. I had become a waiter. With an early June production date, I tracking the car on its journey from Stuttgart to the Emden ship yards, its voyage across the Atlantic, sitting in Halifax in what seemed like 6 months until its arrival at the dealer for a July 25 delivery.

[youtu.be]

<div id="div_ac5870b6227d4083f4ad6db379001cb9"

Never really knew anyone with a Porsche until I was an adult. But I did begin driving with a VW Karmann Ghia, which felt like a Porsche to me :) When the Boxster rumors started, I began searching the internet for every scrap of info I could find. Probably around August of '97 I found PPBB, and ordered by car in Sept of '97. Still have it. Still love it. Never letting it go.

Here's a collection of my memories from 23 years of Boxster enjoyment. Time-consuming to caption all of these photos individually, so here are some suggested captions.
My love for the Boxster began when I was 7 years old!... (no replies)

... and that was in 1959.
The day I got my first mid-engined vehicle. A home-built go-cart that my dad built for me with a 2 HP engine.
The fad was just starting and I got in early.
I learned how to drive it well and soon had to upgrade to a commercially built one, a Rupp Kart.
Eventually the slippery slope took me to high-revving engines, such as the McCulloch 101, Rotax, Aprilla, etc
The Kart was now a full racing Margay which at the end had front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, hydraulic clutch, custom-made expansion chambers, etc. etc.
I raced those Karts for 20 years.
After finishing school I was fortunate enough to purchase a used 914/4. Great fun but it had two main issues. Low on power and crappy bodywork.
So, I upgraded again to a 914/6 which only had one problem: crappy bodywork.
If it got cloudy the car would start to rust. If it rained, the rust was so bad it would lose pieces of floor panels.
I had three of them and eventually let them go and got into other cars which all had two thing in common. Two doors and crappy bodywork.
But in 1993, it was love at first sight.
It was what I had been waiting for since that day in 1959!
It was the Boxster Prototype which was presented at the Detroit Auto Show.
I was one of the lucky ones who got to see it unveiled and upon my return home from the show, I went directly to my local dealer (Plaza Motors in St. Louis, MO) and put down a deposit for a Boxster.
I was told it was just a prototype and that it may never be built, but I wrote a check for $50 and made it official.
Four years later, I recieved a call from Plaza Motors letting me know that I had a VIN assigned to me and that I owed them a bunch more money.
The rest is history.
Happy Boxstering,
Pedro

My story and PB experience (3 replies)

It's hard to believe it's been a little more than 5 years since I became part the Boxster world and Pedro's Board, but it's been one of the most enjoyable periods of my life. Here's a bit about how I got here.

I guess it all started back in the 1970's when I knew more than one person who owned a 914. It remains a "love/hate" car for many, but I was smitten. I loved the way it was so low to the road, handled like the proverbial go-kart, and it's engine was right behind my head. Life happened (marriage, kids, divorce, college costs, 2nd marriage) and I never did get myself a 914. However, after the last of my 3 kids was finishing college I began to think it might be time to make my long held desire come true....mid-life crisis, some say. My wife's cousin still had the 914 he bought in the 70's, and although I never told him, I always thought I might buy it when he finally was ready to sell. Then one day the phone rang, and he asked if I wanted to come up to his house to drive a new to him Porsche he picked up. Would I? Of course, but was happened to the 914? He sold it to his mechanic, as his wife was ready for something more comfortable. Ugh! They had bought a 987 Cayman. I knew nothing about the newer mid-engined P-cars, but one drive of the Cayman and I was in love! Yeah it was bigger than a 914, but it still had the balance and handling - plus WAY more giddy-up. That Flat 6 sound was intoxicating.

I started to seriously think about buying a fun, weekend car. I'd never owned an open top car, so that was a #1 priority. My budget was up to about $20k. Being a long time Honda driver, I was first drawn to the S2000. Miata's were in the convo was well, as my neighbor had one. Both these cars were fine, but had a severe lack of luggage space - something that is needed when one wants to take a multi-day road trip with his wife. Then, I remembered the Cayman, and recalled my wife's cousin telling me it was basically the same car as the Boxster - a car with two trunks!

Research began in earnest on Boxster's, and what is the first thing one learns about? The IMSB ticking time bomb, of course! I joined the forums and read every single thing I could about the issue. I'm not rich guy, and couldn't afford to have an engine grenade. I read all about the aftermarket fixes (ceramic bearings, roller bearings, etc.) that were out there and then claims they made. That's when I found this guy named Pedro. I read every word on the Pedros Garage site. I found out he was the tech expert on Boxster/Cayman for the PCA, too. Without going into the pros and cons of all the IMSB "solutions" out there, I found myself - not a true gear-head in any sense - drawn to the simplicity of the DOF idea. It just seemed to make sense to me.

I started to focus on the 986 as in was in my budget, and I preferred it's looks to the 987. Not being a Porsche die hard, I had no problem with the "fried egg" headlights that so many hated. It was a pure, analog, open top driver's car. I began the 986 search. Lo and behold, the man himself, Pedro, was selling one that fit the bill. He had "saved it from the crusher" as a roller, and installed a completely rebuilt 2.7L M96 - with DOF. My wife loved the dark blue over tan color combo, too. I reached out and expressed I was interested in the car, but it seemed the car had been promised to someone else. Heartbreak! But, after a few days, Pedro called me to say the other buyer had to back out and the car could be mine after all. We booked the first flight to Ft. Lauderdale, Pedro picked us up at the airport and drove us back to his garage. There it was - the first 986 I ever sat in. We sealed the deal, and after visiting family in Miami, drove it 1,300 miles home to Boston.

Since that day (September 24, 2015), we have had more fun, met more great people, and gone on more adventures than I could have ever imagined. We've driven the car about 50,000 miles since then, on too many trips to mention - multiple BRBS, Amelia Island Werks Reunion, Hershey Swap Meets, Boardwalk Reunion, etc, etc. The car has been a trouble-free dream. I've met folks from this board and the PCA Boxster Register, and made lifelong friends. They helped me with DIY projects and we've shared a few frosty, adult beverages along the way. I even served on the Board of Directors of my local PCA regional club. It's been one long Permagrin for me.

But, when I think back on it, getting to know Pedro a little bit and counting him as one of my friends, has been a real pleasure. I often refer to him to other as a peach of a guy. Yes, he' a businessman that wants to make money, but he's so passionate and sharing. He's always available with a FREE word of advice, either on PB or via email or phone. When it comes to Boxster's - he's been there and done that. I'm not sure if there is a "Pedro" in the S2000 or Miata community, but we sure are lucky to have him. So, thanks for all you have done and will continue to do for us, Pedro!

<div id="div_df1045fbd17a5b7ec8ded502a79ebd79"
