Visible when spinning the wheel. The outside part is fine. It must have happened last Summer on our road trip out east where I hit a couple of nasty potholes. I never noriced any vibration.

Would it be safe to continue driving it that way, or should I try to get that inside portion straightened, or replace the rim? Trying to decide the best option as I also have to buy new tires this year.

Is the headlight switch the same for a base Boxster and an S? (4 replies)

MY 2000 S.

I believe that my headlight switch is bad. The driver's side headlamps won't light when the switch is turned (and the key position is on run). I replaced both the standard bulb and the high beam bulb (and the burned out fog light bulb) today. Both of these bulbs work when the flash high beam is pulled, but not when the permanent on direction is pushed. The headlamp bulbs don't work when the switch is pulled to fog light position (the new fog light bulb does work then). The passenger side lights work fine in all situations.

I see pics of the replacement URO brand switch online. Yet, I don't see the fog light indicator on the switch. The PET disc shows 996-613-535-00 as the part number (no other number for S).

Is there one only switch type for base and S?

Thanks.

For future reference: What gear oil for limited slip differential? (6 replies)

In a few thousand mlles my 2013 Boxster S will need a transaxle oil change. There're many discussions online, but just about everything is vague concerning oils specific to Porsches with LSDs. Product "fitment" information may mention Porsche, but omit explicitly stating appropriateness for LSDs. Then there's a lurking issue concerning compatibility with "yellow metal" internals. The only official Porsche labeled product doesn't seem to mention suitability for LSDs. Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 may be right, as M1 is their engines' factory fill, but I've not found any info regarding Porsche compatibility.

Can anyone offer a definitive answer (not based on conjecture, thank you.)

I'm searching for some photos of my very early MY2000 Boxster S.... (11 replies)

Hello All

Nearly twenty-six years ago (November 1999 in fact) I took delivery in London, UK, of one of the very first Boxster Ss. I had ordered the S when the original 986 came out - I went for a test drive in a standard 2.5 litre 1997 Boxster and told the dealer "I'd love to have the faster version when they make one." and he took a deposit from me...and two years later I spec'd the S and then took delivery. It was a fun time. I made lots of friends on PPBB as a result and I think many are here now on Pedro's board.

Would you believe me if I said that I can't find a single photo of that car! Its registration was V961 JGW. The car was mine in the days before ubiquitous mobiles phones with good cameras. However, I am sure that I posted pictures from a digital camera on PPBB...but now that bulletin board is no more, and I can't remember my login details for the archive and I can't find those photos at home.

Can anyone help please? I have good pictures of most of my vehicles, but none it seems of my black Boxster S. I'd love to find those old pictures.

Please let me know,

Thanks

Howard

Finally swapped the O2/lambda sensors... (2 replies)

I swapped all 4. They were fairly inexpensive at the "jungle website". I ordered name brand BOSCH parts. $212 all in - for all four including tax and delivery. Delivery took a week though.

Job took roughly 2 hours all in. Including rearranging cars and such. Hardest part was getting my hands on the sensors to depress the clip that holds them in. Passenger side rear was by far the worst.
There is a difference in length at least on my 2000MY 986. The rear is longer and black Part # 15183. The fronts are blue Part # 15182

The car has 96480 miles on it. It was throwing O2 codes for years. But they were truly intermittent. As in years would go by without a code. Even this year, the codes would come and go with me doing nothing.
But I will say that the car is noticeably sharper.

Hard to explain exactly, but the engine is just better. On an on-ramp, there is not the slightest hesitation. As there was before - and I mean slight - most people probably would not notice. But driving back to back, you notice.

Bottom line, definitely a straightforward job. The Harbor Freight 22mm O2 socket worked just fine. The jobe would be easier if I had a lift and more flexible wrists. If you have a choice, jack the car higher than you would for an oil change. I was on ramps, but If I had it to do over, I would want to be able to roll around better to get my arm into tight spaces.

Thankfully, I had previously affixed a cable tie because it fell out many years ago - better to secure it than be sorry I thought.

This time, it appears one of the tabs failed.

So checking online..... prices are STUPID expensive. As in over $250 for the pair.

For that money, I am installing more cable ties and crossing my fingers I suspect.

But that might not be viable over time.
Strange Shifter Behavior - '98 Boxster Tip (1 reply)

1998 Boxster Tip with 39,XXX miles. The shifter has been somewhat stiff for the last year or so. I took the car out the other day, and it ran perfect. The transmission works perfectly in all modes. Stopped for gas, and headed back home. I got to the house, put the car in the garage, and could not get the car out of D. After a bit of muscle, I was able to get it into N, but it was frozen in that position. Of course I could only turn the key to the accessory position, so had to disconnect the battery. I tried everything to free it without excessive force to no avail.

It sat for 2 days, and out of curiosity, I reconnected the battery, stepped on the brake pedal, and the shifter moved smoothly into P. I can hear everything properly working related to the shifter lock, etc. It seems this issue went away as the car cooled. When cool, it seems to be working normal. I ran the shifter through its paces with no issue.

I'm now wary to drive it, as I don't want to get stuck somewhere with the transmission stuck in D.

Any idea what might cause this? Could it be the manual valve? I know '97 was the only year they used Bakelite that was prone to swelling/seizing when hot, but the symptom sounds eerily the same.

Thanks!

Voltage reading differential between multifunction display and external volt meter. (2 replies)

The following is one example of several. The numbers change, but their approximate relationship remains the same.
I've had my 13 Boxster S, sitting overnight, locked, with no maintainer attached, but with a voltmeter connected by power plug to the footwell outlet.
The reading is 0 as expected, then when the car is unlocked and "wakes up" the reading goes to a healthy 12.67.
When the key is turned in the ignition so as to read the multifunction voltage display, the external voltmeter reading understandably starts to drift down, but in simultaneously observing the car display, (a good peripheral vision exercise) it's always about .6 to .8 of a volt lower. I would think the multi display takes readings from very close to the battery and/or alternator, and that the power outlet, if anything, would show a lesser reading, being ostensibly farther from the voltage source. So,

a) Can anyone here explain this?
b) Assuming the multi display is inaccurate, is there a system calibration/adjustment that can be done, say via PIWIS?

I changed the oil yesterday and found green particles in the oil filter...... (1 reply)

2000 S. About 16 months and 2100 miles since the last oil change. About 81,000 miles on the engine. Regular oil and filter changes.

In previous oil changes, I found a hand full of small black plastic particles in the oil filter. This time, I found a few green particles in the filter canister and filter oil. So, I cut open the filter this morning and I found a lot of small green plastic particles. I didn't find any black particles this time.

I believe that they are the tensioning chain guides and/or chain guides, all part of the vario-cam system.

Is my initial assessment accurate? Time to call my mechanic or dealer.

Are there other while-you-are-in-there items to change (vario-cam actuators)?

Odd issue on my 981 Boxster (5 replies)

Today I took my 2013 Boxster on a 400 mile road trip up to visit my good friend from north of the border, Guenter, near Niagara. . The car, which I acquired last year with 16,800 miles on the clock, performed flawlessly as usual. However, today not 5 miles across the CA border, I got a message that said something like Steering Function Diminished - OK to Continue Driving. I noticed no effect on the steering; however, a few minutes later I noticed the climate control stopped working (no fan) and I lost seat ventilation as well. The car continued to drive fine. A another few miles, and a got a notice the Auto Start/Stop function was disabled. I should point out it was in the upper 80s F and very humid all day. I had the AC and vented seat on all day - a 7.5 hour drive. Of course, I started to worry and Guenter informed me there were no Porsche dealerships in the area should the problems continue or escalate. At the hotel, I decided to let it cool off for a while - maybe 45 minutes - and went back outside. Put the key in, started it up, and the messages and symptoms disappeared. We took it on about a 20 minute drive to dinner at a local vineyard and all seemed fine. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts what might have happened?
