Black Foam on Dashboard

Hi All,
Hope you can help me solve a puzzle. My 2008 Boxster occasionally spits out little bits of black foam from the defroster vents on the dashboard. I assume it is some kind of insulation that has decayed over the years. Anyone know what it is or what's involved in solving the problem?

Not the best way IMO

This way is not quicker or easier and it doesn't address the other vent flap (on the right from this video's perspective) that has the same problem.

I think the easier way is by removing the center dash console and cutting the vent. It is totally reversible and it gives you access to both vent flaps.
