exterior gas lid and battery replacement

I just took my 2001 boxter out of storage and discovered that the battery is bad. Not only that but after I started the car, I went to put gas in it and discovered that the exterior cover to the gas cap would not open. Would having a bad battery keep this lid from unlocking. Also, when replacing the battery, do I need to know anything special...A

Battery trick is just climb in the front trunk. But read the article if you want a list of batteries that fit the Boxster ... nothing special needed.
The exterior gas cap...

... is not affected by the battery's condition.
there's a locking pin that acts with the door locks to lock it when the car is locked.
Maybe because of the extended storage the pin is just stuck.
There's an emergency cable to open the lid under the right door's hinge.
