986 hardtop price?
boxsterd - Tuesday, 28 August, 2012, at 1:45:13 am
What's a reasonable offer to make on a hardtop for a 2001 base boxster in very good condition? I believe the MSRP is about $3,000. Would $1,000 be an insult?

I've seen them go between $1,000 and $1,500.
But they are getting scarce.
You would always see one or two up for auction.
Now you won't see one for weeks.

We bought one many years ago(almost 10) off someone who was separating it from a MY00 986. I believe we paid $1500, but it was perfect, same color, and was never used or in sunlight(hung on wall of garage since new). It's well worth the investment, the hardtop has kept the original top on our 986 in almost perfect shape(sound: knocks on wood). There don't seem to be as many 986 hardtops as 996 versions. In the PNW, they seem to bring at least $1200-1300. Make an offer and see what happens. Best of luck.

If memory serves, for a while, the 996 Cab came with a hardtop included. For the 986, 987 and now 981, it has always been an option. If my 997 came with a hardtop included, it would have been up for sale immediately.

Bought one used in 2000 for $2K and never regreted it....have used it every Winter since.
Paid the asking price only because Winter was coming, the color matched, and it was in "like new" condition.

After 12 years of use, the top is still in awesome shape...and had not thought about the purchase price until now :-)
So if you see one you like and will use it every winter, our advice is to think long term.
