I just had to pull harder and further. I tend to be gentle with mechanical things. They felt like they had moved quite a bit. But you really have to pull them hard once the slack is out of the cables, to unlatch the latches.

A 24 V battery would not have made a difference. Doh!

I wonder why the owners manual states that if the battery is dead one cannot open the front trunk and you must contact your dealer. Yes, it does. That's why i was convinced they were electric switches. but they are not.
