It pays to have your oil filter checked ...
Pedro (Odessa, FL) - Wednesday, 12 February, 2014, at 11:45:46 am
... every time you have your oil changed.
It had been almost 5,000 miles since his last oil change.
This is from a customer's car (2006 Carrera S w/39,900 miles) yesterday.

Just about every fold on the paper filter was full of chips

Unfortunately they were ferrous which can be picked up with a magnet

The solution is engine tear-down.
Complete cleaning, new seals, new rings, new IMS bearing with DOF, replacement of the AOS, replacement of the Heat Transfer Unit.
Although he'll have to spend several thousand to get this work done, it sure beats having to replace with a Porsche remanufactured engine!
Happy Porsche'ing,
Pedro

Pedro,

My take from your post is the previous change did not show any signs of metal or did it. Also I assume the picture is of the inside of the filter that has been cut open. Please confirm.

How long (in time) had it been since he last changed his oil?

The filter from my 2000 S Boxster when the first engine blew at 47K miles. The failure mode was unknown but IMS suspected.

Peace

Very bad news for anybody with a 997.1 911.

Regarding the repair, when you say "several thousands" to do the repair, are we talking $2-3K or a lot more?
When I asked people locally about replacing the IMS on our 987 the response was probably closer to $10K because the case has to be split and they suggested a number of components to replace while it engine was apart.

Pedro,is it possible this 997 had the old single row IMSB.I read that some really early 06 Boxsters had the single row also.
Please advise with a pic if possible after tear down. Was this car tracked or a daily driver.
Thx
ps:if this was an imsb issue with the new larger bearing many will want to know as i personally have not herd of
any since the newer larger design.
