Exhaust Heat Shields

A couple of the steel heat shield sections, on the exhaust of my 1999 Boxster have developed rattles. I have clamped the loose ends with jubilee clips, which has stopped the rattles.

Just how important are these heat shields? Is it OK to carefully remove them?

component from the high temperature radiated by the exhaust system the shields cover. They're important. Leave them installed. If they are loose you can certainly secure them so they do not rattle. Even though they are important no one wants to suffer with a rattly/noisy car.
It's just as easy to fix them as remove them

Just get a few U-type speednuts and short screws from your local hardware store. Home Depot has them.
